Daylight saving time is great, when younger I got to spending more time outdoors with the kids after school,we had more time to get to our favourite rabbit and hare hunting spots, hence more healthymeat on the table.
All in all one of the best things that happen in NSW.

yes - I always like the summer with daylight saving -
you could do plenty of things after work with that extra sunlight.
e.g mow the lawns so your weekend was free.
Go down to to St Kilda - have a nice meal -
a walk along the beach - then watch the sunset.

Melanomas are mostly from sun exposure in the middle of the day
when the UV index is extreme.

To get an optimal vitamin D supplement from the sun at a minimal risk of getting cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM), the best time of sun exposure is noon.

Thus, common health recommendations given by authorities in many countries, that sun exposure should be avoided for three to five hours around noon and postponed to the afternoon, may be wrong and may even promote CMM.

The reasons for this are (1) The action spectrum for CMM is likely to be centered at longer wavelengths (UVA, ultraviolet A, 320-400 nm) than that of vitamin D generation (UVB, ultraviolet B, 280-320 nm). (2) Scattering of solar radiation on clear days is caused by small scattering elements, Rayleigh dominated and increases with decreasing wavelengths.

A larger fraction of UVA than of UVB comes directly and unscattered from the sun. (3) The human body can be more realistically represented by a vertical cylinder than by a horizontal, planar surface, as done in almost all calculations in the literature. With the cylinder model, high UVA fluence rates last about twice as long after noon as high UVB fluence rates do. In view of this, short, nonerythemogenic exposures around noon should be recommended rather than longer nonerythemogenic exposures in the afternoon.

This would give a maximal yield of vitamin D at a minimal CMM risk.

I doubt it -
after 5pm the UV has to travel trough too much air -
it's practically zero.

In summer(EST) on a clear day the hottest period of the day is between NOON & 2- 2.30pm.

Cancer Council quote -

Quote:
UV radiation can be high even on cool and overcast days. This means you can't rely on clear skies or high temperatures to determine when you need to protect yourself from the sun.

Just as DLS ends in southern states another article pushing DLS in QLD pops up in the Courier Mail on Saturday.

All pushed by the self-centred SE Corner from the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane to the Gold Coast.... and all the interstate migrants ... who would you believe move here for the weather & lifestyle ...

only to want to change it to be like it was where they came from .... "back home we had this, back home we had that, we want it here" FFS. Roll Eyes

Quote:
DAYLIGHT SAVING BACKED
JEREMY PIERCE
Queensland tradies and labourers who left school before year 12 are the only Sunshine State demographic likely to be against daylight saving,
according to shock new research.

With the clocks in other states once again winding back on Sunday morning, research compiled by University of Queensland academic
Thomas Sigler for WA politician Wilson Tucker
has for the first time painted a detailed picture of our attitudes to daylight saving.

A preview of the report, released in February, showed a Queensland referendum on daylight saving would pass with resounding success if it
were held in the present era, with almost two thirds (65.9 per cent) of respondents in favour of the controversial concept.

The report has now been released in full, with the stances of hundreds of Queenslanders measured against almost a dozen socio-economic factors,
including education, occupation, gender and political leaning.

Almost every single category was overwhelmingly in favour of introducing DST, even the retirees traditionally viewed as being against the concept
(53.3 per cent).

Rural residents – another demographic typically seen as strong opponents,
were split 50-50, while more than 70 per cent of Queensland-based National Party voters (another traditional staunch opponent to DST) were
in favour.

The findings were released as Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate again implored
both sides of politics to take a fresh look at the concept.

Interestingly, almost 70 per cent of Queenslanders who left school before
year 12 (69.2 per cent) were against DST, while those with university degrees were 81.4 per cent in favour.

Tradies (54.5 per cent) and labourers (67.6 per cent) were the only occupational group with a majority of respondents against DST.

“Three of the categories with the highest “no” stance (tradies, labourers
and retirees) all have a lot more access to sunlight,” Professor Sigler said.

“People who don’t finish school are more likely to go into those outdoor jobs where people are exposed to more sunlight and don’t feel as strongly about missing out on an extra hour of daylight in the afternoons.”

Mr Tate said he remained in support of daylight saving and called on politicians to get behind it.

Look out Peccar this Professor Thomas Sigler did this research for West Australian Daylight Savings Party politician Wilson Tucker. Grin

The fact that Professor Sliger made the comment missing out on an extra hour of daylight in the afternoons"  shows the study & the belief there is any benefit is flawed.

There is "no extra" daylight.

It's light until 7pm in summer in QLD.

What the study did show that not everyone who works works 9am to 5pm and it is no benefit nor wanted by tradies/labourers.

After 46 years of shift work I can tell you it is of no benefit to shift workers either.

9 to 5ers, University educated wankers are the main proponents.

It's moronic logic that believes putting the clock ahead an hour "saves" daylight.

Go to work an hour earlier you morons.
