Oliver Twist

Will give that to my great niece Milly for her 12th birthday next month.

She will also get a opalised ammonite fossil, stimulate her interest in the natural world tho I doubt she will become a biologist etc.

She will read it—is way ahead of her classmates in reading and comprehension. I think it will be challenging for her and I might buy the Cliff Notes for the book for her mother.

Yes, I did ask my niece first and she thought it was a great idea.

Anyone think of a better Dickens book for my great niece?

Or other book?

I bought a copy of the book "Oliver Twist" many years ago. I started reading it a few years back. I got as far as reading Oliver's fight with a teen at the mortuary. Put the book down and did not read any further. I have some DVD in my collection, either a miniseries or a long movie of Oliver Twist. 1982 era. It is quite a good story.

Perhaps get her to start reading John Marsden's "Tomorrow when the war began" series, if she is 13 year old or older. Good book for teenagers.

Dickens is hard going for a 12 year old.

I'd buy her a collection of classic short stories instead, print or audio. She could discover geat writers rather than be put off reading by a long, hard slog through Dickens.

Or a collection of Agatha Christie stories. Or Gombrich's Little History of the World, a great overview of history written for children.
Tolstoy's Stories for Children would be a great gift. She would remember that for the rest of her life.

She will manage Oliver Twist, never fear.

A collection of classic short stories is an excellent suggestion!

One good thing about Agatha Christie—she wrote perfect English, spelling, punctuation and grammar. So another excellent suggestion—grammar starts for real for Milly in a year or two so a really good example of English for her is a brilliant idea!

I hated grammar in HS. My third year English teacher suggested Christie as an example of really good English.

Milly has read and understood Wind in the Willows.

OK, Amazon to send directly to Milly:

1. Henry Lawson short stories

2. Japanese short stories (In English!)

3. Oliver Twist

4. Agatha Christie “The Seven Dials Mystery”

Keep her busy a day or two.

Thanks to all those who made suggestions!

Frank—some of your suggestions I will keep for Christmass pressies! Thanks very much!

Ebenezer Scrooge, counting house—some weird concepts for Milly.

There are also Christmas short stories by Dickens—give her both?

There is a really powerful little scene in A Christmas Carol.

The ghost of Ebenezer Scrooge (Christmas Future I think?) where he sees the dogsbody take the really good shirt from the corpse of Ebenezer to sell. Money without friendship, lover is pointless.

Yeah.

Was in a Tasmania shop—not just a TasmaniaN shop, these shops showcase (mostly) the top Tassie produce plus some other stuff—and saw something there to send my younger sister—the GOOD sister  Grin

Saw something else to send my four nieces, will make a nice parcel.

Milly will get A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, maybe the Old Curiosity Shop?

Maybe the Cliff Notes on Oliver Twist and The Old Curiosity Shop? for Milly’s Mum?

"Poor Folk".

The main thing is not to give her by mistake "Bobok", "A Gentle Creature", "Notes from Underground" and "The Dream of a Ridiculous Man"  Cheesy
