No good if the green zones take up most of east coast ey?

Puts pressure on what areas are left for reccies & pros.

Approx 78% of the seafood Australians consume is imported.

Govts(state), especially Labor govts, are currently planning more removal/resumptions of local commercial fishing licenses and expanding green zones. Soon the QLD Govt will join the other states and enforce fishing licenses for amateurs.

Admittedly fish numbers bounce back when areas are closed.... but permanently closed???? Then what?

Bag limits have also had a hand in helping numbers come back.

People... amateurs I mean had become far too greedy in what they took.

Good to see you get a feed but make the most of it while you can because more big changes are coming soon.

btw I'd leave Jew & Trag in the ocean.

targetted with big ring nets that took the whole school

now they arent, there are big numbers up and down the coast

my contacts on north stradbroke regularly saw comercial fishos do the same to tailor schools, drag them into the beach and then sell tons for cat food, now the numbers are going well once again

recreational fishers are a boom for the ecomony

its a much better use of a resource

Strict NO TAKE ZONES allow the fish species to 'breed in respite' and the 'spillover' begins to exhibit more species and bigger sizes.

The more NO TAKE ZONES in the right spots especially and the more Fish you will get. It's a simple equation.

Each NO TAKE ZONE is like a farm production of fish so to speak - the SPILLOVER being the places of harvest.

It's well known, that a place hit hard by fishing and especially spear-fishing - the fish eventually 'leave' that area. They're not stupid. So if NO TAKE ZONES are not permanently incorporated, then ROTATIONAL ZONES need to be put into place at least.

When NZ put in NO TAKE ZONES around the Poor Knight's Islands and Goat Island. The Fishing Industry both Commercial and Recreational put in their usual bully whinges, etc. But after just '6' years - they were getting BIGGER sized fish and more of them outside the Zones as SPILLOVER and then harking on about how great the Zones were!!

Australia needs to wake up to its silly self and make a lot of NO TAKE ZONES all along the Coastal scenes. Over major Bommie areas, small island areas like the Five Islands outside of Wollongong and any other environment that isn't just 'sand' or barren rock shelving.
All sealife needs a motel or home to breed in stress-free and if you look at the islands of Raratonga - almost a complete NO TAKE ZONE, life will 'go there' and life will proliferate there until it maxes out and the spillover begins.

So far, humanity only knows how to HARVEST the seas and oceans. It tries to farm with Aquaculture pens - but the quality of this is very very poor. It needs to learn how to implement NO TAKE ZONES as the real natural-FARMS to gain the superior success rates that they would offer... and they're far cheaper too. Wink

Yes but not everyone can afford a $15k to $30k boat and all the gear...... especially to go into open waters like the reef.

So how will those people get their fresh local fish?

Buy imported shyte like BASA(Vietnamese Catfish)?

As I said a license to fish is next on the agenda for QLD, further expansion of green zones and further reductions in bag & possession limits.

you can't go fishing everyday with possession limits because that includes what you have at home not just on the day when you are fishing.

We should be able to maintain a viable commercial fishery.

Have you ever tried going crabbing in recent years?

It's absolutely disgusting the number of pot raiders and pot thieves there are out there now.

A professional crabber I was speaking to last week lost 18 pots over Easter.

Feral grubs up here from all over & down your way ... don't bring pots .... steal them ... use them and then dump them.
