I wonder how they decide which ones are to be closed. Is it purely based on the profit each branch makes?

It's not only that -
the last time I went to the bank they had no cash available over the counter -
I had to use their ATM.

About 20 years ago I got ripped off by my Bank's ATM.
I withdrew $300 but no money came out yet a receipt came out for $300.
I went to the Bank and they said they would check the money
by doing a count at the end of the day.
The next day -
they reckoned their count was correct and I got no refund.
There was nothing I could do.

The vast majority of under 60s do not require face-to-face interaction with banks. Boomers are no longer the focus of banks' interest and are responding to the need (or lack of need) for services to their target demographics.

With cash transactions targeted to be gone within the next few years, banks are moving to force their remaining cash customers to adapt to the changing reality.

No more need for a shop front for you to walk into to beg for a loan, not when you can beg in your own home with a broker or online

it's the same with:
electricity, gas, telecommunications: phones, internet etc,
hospitals, schools, roads, police.

Providing essential services is supposed to come before profits.
It was wrong that we privatized essential services.
