Perth roasting ... It aint arf ot mum
Feb 14th, 2024 at 7:39pm

Perth is roasting and it probably means all of Australia will roast as the heat permeates through the country.

"So far, one-third of the days this year – 15 out of 42 – have recorded temperatures of 35 degrees or above."

https://www.watoday.com.au/national/western-australia/there-s-no-break-triple-tr...

Quote:
... She said the way WA was tracking, by the end of the month the record for the highest number of 40 degree-plus days in February could be doubled.

“At the moment, we’ve had four days above 40C in February, that is the record,” Lingard said.

“And we’ve got another three on the current forecast.”

The Perth metropolitan area has recorded six days above 40 degrees so far this summer, all in 2024.

So far, one-third of the days this year – 15 out of 42 – have recorded temperatures of 35 degrees or above.

The average number of days of 40 degrees or above is 3.3 in summer, while the summer with the most number of days of 40 degrees or above took place in 2021-22, where the benchmark was passed on 13 days.

Well they don't have many trees over there for starters. What do you expect?

From Perth it's just a giant sprawl of suburbs, black tar roads and cement. Trees cool the land, not heat it up. Nothing but Wheatbelts where it doesn't rain either. Trees attract the rain.

Perth needs a good roasting... who wants to start off with the jokes?

Could an extended period of warming of central Australia and Western NSW lead to a dust storm like the one that hit Sydney in 2009.

2009 was a year when global temperature was higher than in preceding years and decades. It was the highest temperature year on record at that time, just like 2023.

https://www.climatecentral.org/climate-matters/2023-5th-hottest-us-year-with-rec...

Quote:
... Hottest year for Earth — 5th-hottest for U.S.
In 2023, global temperatures were warmer than any previous year on record. A streak of continuously record-shattering months and seasons began in June 2023 and is still ongoing.

The planet’s fever is forecast to continue into 2024 with an extra warming boost from El Niño layered on top of the long-term warming trend driven by carbon pollution. ...

From Wikipedia:

Quote:
... The 2009 Australian dust storm, also known as the Eastern Australian dust storm, was a dust storm that swept across the Australian states of New South Wales and Queensland from 22 to 24 September 2009. The capital, Canberra, experienced the dust storm on 22 September,[1][2] and on 23 September the storm reached Sydney and Brisbane. Some of the thousands of tons of dirt and soil lifted in the dust storm were dumped in Sydney Harbour and the Tasman Sea.

On 23 September, the dust plume measured more than 500 kilometres (310 mi) in width and 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) in length and covered dozens of towns and cities in two states.[3] By 24 September, analysis using MODIS at NASA measured the distance from the northern edge at Cape York to the southern edge of the plume to be 3,450 km.[4] While the cloud was visible from space, on the ground the intense red-orange colour and drop in temperature drew comparisons with nuclear winter, Armageddon, and the planet Mars.[5][6][7]

The dust storm was described by the Bureau of Meteorology as a "pretty incredible event" that was the worst in the state of New South Wales in nearly 70 years.[5][6][8][9] The phenomenon was reported around the world. The Weather Channel's Richard Whitaker said: "This is unprecedented. We are seeing earth, wind and fire together". It was later referred to as "The mother of all dust storms." ...

I've been seriously thinking about moving to Albany lately.

Compare the pair:

Perth Forecast

Albany Forecast

And Albany is only 415km from Perth, about a four and a half hour drive.

I really think Albany should have been the capital of WA and not Perth. In fact, if it wasn't for the Swan River Perth probably never would have been established where it is now.

And that would have been great... especially in summer.

If Albany became the Capital of WA, then northern WA would split off from southern WA. No way would the northerners put up with such a long drive.  Cheesy

Albany does sound like a far better place than Perth.
But hey, most regional places are way better than the major 'city' areas by far.

Personally, I'm thinking of moving to the Chatham Islands.

Yep, Albany is the place to be   Smiley

43 degrees in Perth today, and two more over 40 degree days coming up on the weekend.

Yep.

I'm hoping today's 43 degrees will come early in the day with a cooler change later seeing as there's a sea breeze after lunch and tomorrow is suppposed to be only 29 degrees before things heat up again until at least Wednesday.

Actually Perth suffers from heat generated in the centre of Oz (a vast desert), when Highs are stuck in the Bight, directing easterlies over Perth. So Perth is hotter than the Alice today, because the same High is pushing cool ocean air up into the centre's east.

Note : this year, Feb mean daily av. max. temp so far  in Perth: 36 C.

Adelaide, 28C....8C difference!

Long term av: Perth is only 2 degrees hotter than Adelaide in February.

(BOM stats).

The seas off Albany are very rough. Every beachcomber would become a treasure hunter if there was more ship traffic in the area.
