Off to India again . . .
Jan 18th, 2024 at 10:08am

. . . in a few weeks, mostly travelling by train.
Going to Darjeerling as I’m a railway enthusiast, particularly steam.
If one has the time, train travel is the best option, not expensive and on long trips provides reasonable accomodation.
On some express trains one can now ring ahead for meals to be delivered [hot] at designated stops.
Will send some pictures.
Will be based in Mumbai , lots of friends and a few relations and then paying our first visit to Kolkata thence to south India to visit more friends and relations.

I want to see pictures of you riding on the roof! Smiley Seriously, I think a train ride through India would be excellent.  Train travel is certainly the best option if you can do it.

This looks like a goodie.
Looking forward to the pictures.
I'm a fan of old steam trains also.
Any train travel is far better than Coach by a long stretch (of the legs).

India’s railway ministry said Sunday a “ghastly” accident was
narrowly avoided after 22 train coaches carrying some 1,000
passengers became detached from the engine and sped
backwards for miles before being stopped.  (8 April 2018)

The runaway carriages in the eastern state of Odisha rolled
for 12km before being brought to a shuddering halt by rocks
placed on the tracks(!) by railway staff.

A spokesman for the railway ministry’s eastern division said
none of the passengers were injured in the incident.

—Seriously, I hope you have a thoroughly
enjoyable trip mate.  I travelled around
India, Nepal, and  Sri Lanka around 40
years ago, and would love to go back.

There is nothing like the pleasure of waiting in a grand European railway station for a night train to another country..Feels very Agatha Christie! Smiley

Thanks Geoff,
Fortunately times have changed and roof travel has declined and is only seen, if at all, on really remote lines.
“ India has a system of express trains, operated by Indian Railways which comes under the purview of the Ministry of Railways of Government of India. As of 2023, it maintains over 108,706 km (67,547 mi) of tracks and operates nearly 3,000 express trains daily.”

I would love to spend time in India. Visit the Taj Mahal, eat some incredible curries.

I want to visit Istanbul, see the Haigha Sophia, earliest of all christian churches. The Golden Horn, Gallipoli, esp the English & French part at the bottom of the peninsula—there is a great uncle of mine buried there. I have a little jar with teethmarks on it that are that great uncle’s teeth (well, according to my Mum.)

I would then like to get to the Danube and go upstream then down the Rhine.

Not impossible, bit difficult. Love to have my fave niece and her daughter with me for part of the trip—important to open young minds to this beautiful world of ours.

Visited these places in 2014. Absolutely fabulous. Istanbul is incredible. Do it!
