Antarctic - Emperor Penguins slated to go extinct?
Dec 28th, 2023 at 4:30pm

According to JM and a peer-reviewed paper? in Nature.  Except of course the devil is in the detail.

"All of these colonies were discovered using medium resolution satellite imagery in the last 14 years11 and their populations counted using very high-resolution imagery12. So far, only Rothschild Island colony has been visited and, of the others, only Smyley Island has been seen from aerial survey (British Antarctic Survey, unpubl.). There are no records of large aggregations of none-breeding emperors between October and December, so we make the assumption that these sites, which are present in the same location every year in the breeding season, are breeding sites. "

Assumptions, assumptions. What could possibly go wrong? Roll Eyes

Of course his pretty picture is not from one of the breeding colonies mentioned. Roll Eyes

Of course 5 out of 50 colonies is enough to predict extinction. Wink

And about 15million sq kms of sea ice is unbelievably low. Wink

Poor JM at it again.

On the one hand complains about landfast ice not being enough and then on the other hand complains about it being winter only ice when the breeding takes place. He then complains of they then travel and they might drown.  But by the time they travel they are, at least partially, fledged. That is they have their feathers and they can swim. If there are puddles they won't freeze. Puddles are by definition above zero.

The title of the paper -
"Record low 2022 Antarctic sea ice led to catastrophic breeding failure of emperor penguins"

So if they birth in winter, how is that a breeding failure due to spring ice?

And of course he confuses himself. 15million Sq Km is winter and when they are born. Nothing to do with AGW.

Considering this Planet has so many 'flexible' variables - which makes Life on this planet a success, compared to other 'simple' Planets with hardly any 'change' that are lifeless and sterile.

I would say that even Penguins have their variables and fluctuations - of which, by any means does not equate to 'extinction'. Grin

Poor Monk the Redneck Moron. Doesn't have variables, only marbles, in his head.

Poor JM. Just can't help himself.

Antarctic sea ice is retreating, this causes problems for Emperor Penguins.

Of course he can't explain how any sea ice extent variation causes spring problems when the chicks breed in winter. The emperor penguins keep the young hatchlings in pouches until they get their down. Otherwise they would freeze.

And of course "records" only go back to 1979 and they never talk about the uncertainties back at the start.

"Despite global warming and Arctic sea-ice loss, on average the Antarctic sea-ice extent has not declined since 1979 when satellite data became available."

Dated 2022. One year does not climate make. Wink

Monk is a dumb redneck who exists in his Pussies&Critters Board, where no-one talks to him, because of who he is.

Seems Drones have discovered FIVE NEW COLONIES of Emperor Penguins in Antarctica.
Well that's going to put a spanner in the Extinction Extremists works.
Monk is a retard.
