I had to have 2 blankets.  Huh

The longest day is only 3 days away.

September was the last time I saw a temperature at 12°C minimum. That would have been among the last nights that I used a doona to keep warm. But, 11°C in December would likely be unheard of. Even rainy nights you don't see temperatures go below 15.

But you live almost in the tropics.

If you give it some thought, hot weather in one hemisphere can affect the extremes of cold weather in the other hemisphere.

Comment from another forum:

Man-made 'climate change' is a fraudulent cult belief.
The members thereof are immune to argument, logic, facts, and critical thinking.

Soap-dodging prairie fairies, balderdash repeating, doomtards, nihilists, tomfoolery and hooey spouting inane buffoons, enviro-hating stooges, climate whackos, virtue signalers, and grifters one and all!

The Southern ocean is the climate driver of the whole world.

It's the circumpolar currents of water that do it.

And you live almost in the roaring 40s. But, at this time of year, you get more daylight than I do. So, what accounts for your 11°C night time temperatures in December?

yep - we get the tail end of the roaring 40s - when there are Southerly winds
direct from the freezing Southern ocean.
Melbourne is at 38 degrees South in latitude.
Monk lives right in at 43 degrees South in latitude - him and his poor tropical dog.  Roll Eyes

You're at 23.5 degrees  South in latitude
which is the edge of the tropic of Capricorn.
Earth's axial tilt is about 23.5 degrees.

Arctic blast: Record-breaking cold weather forecast for many states

    Published

A major winter storm has unleashed icy winds and heavy snowfall across large parts of the US, disrupting travel and leaving thousands without power.

The storms will be followed by a bitter cold arctic chill into the weekend,
with temperatures dipping near -50F (-45C) in some areas.

Nearly 10in ((25.4cm) of snow in Iowa, where the 2024 election cycle kicks off on Monday, has upended campaign events.

Forecasters have called it a "life-threatening winter weather".

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued weather alerts in nearly every state, as snow is in the forecast into Saturday from as far west as Oregon to as far east as Maine. More than 70 million people are under winter weather alerts.

Extreme weather has forced the cancellation of more than 2,000 flights as of Friday, most of which were scheduled to fly out of Chicago, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware.

Nearly 200,000 people are without power as of Friday evening, with Michigan and Wisconsin most affected.

If the global warming continues we'll all freeze to death.

I would understand that being at 38 degrees south latitude would mean that you would have cooler conditions for times when the wind direction is coming from the south. But, 11°C at night during December/January is something wild. I had a doona over me and the fan off the last time I had a night of 11°C. Heck, I had a winter where I did not see anything below 15°C until the latter part of June and into July.

Sun is down before 7pm every day of the year. Sun is not up before 5am in the morning. We get more direct sunlight everyday of the week in the summer than you would with your 15 hours of sunlight during the summer. But, that cool breeze from the south is enough to get you cold weather during the summer.

You might want to keep your "tropical dog" comments for people with such pets living in your suburb.

You don't get a real winter where you are -
23.5 degrees  South in latitude.

Sure but Monk has a tropical dog -
it gets a lot colder in Tassie compared to here.
The summer in Tassie is perfect - not so hot as here.

You seem to be making my point for me. The east coast of Tasmania is about as cold in its winters as it is in Melbourne. And whilst I might get an average of about 2 weeks of cold nights per winter, I remember having a dog that shivered in the warm lounge room during a cold night's weather. Most dogs are not capable of sleeping through cold weather without some shelter. Monk would have done whatever he would to make sure Socks is warm during the winter.

Booby is just trolling, it is almost all he does.

Staghounds are an English, not a “tropical” breed and the dweeb has been told this more than once.

Whatever the case, you would be keeping Socks warm during the winter. My father has two dogs that have to have their dog jackets put on during the winter. They get to sleep on their beds out on the veranda. The beds get a tent over them to keep them warm. Dad even has blinds to pull down to ward off most of the cold breeze. And then there is a set of louvres on the other railing that Dad can wind shut.

Regardless, there are not many breeds of dog that can handle cold conditions.

Look (and, yes, I have already told the trolling arsehole this too) not far from here there is a house with two dogs living there. The dogs sleep on dog beds on the veranda at night.

I look after Socks.
