I Was Only Nineteen - New Release

To mark the 40th anniversary of the release of this
song relating to Australia's involvement in the Vietnam
war, the recording by Redgum, has been reworked.

Redgum's lead vocalist-guitarist, John Schumann,
wrote the song based on experiences he heard from
veterans including his brother in-law.

   This song has a special emotional significance for
   me, and I must admit to being a little disappointed
   with this 2023, reworked and re-recorded version...

It's "nice" but has lost the subtle emotional depths of the
original—partly because, I think, of overproduction(?).
Schumann still emotes as per the original, but the addition
of Donna Simpson's opening, vocals (as she sings about her
father), spoils it.

This is the original version...

As far as I'm concerned, there was no need to change
the original, as it's stood the test of time, and with a
special significance—especially to former diggers—who
are all in their 70s by now... or deceased.

There's also a couple of errors in the lyrics. Anybody notice?

You can tell Schumann's balls have shrunken in his old age.
His voice isn't what it used to be.
Must be sad if if you're the only one who does an official cover of one's own song.
Kinda sums up ANZAC DAY - Australian Sardaukhar fighting for the 'mercenary' glory of the American 'Empire', the most 'invasive' nation on the planet and boy, didn't they rape Vietnam just for being 'different'!!!
No sympathy for scumbags - even in our own country.

Australia (Percival) shouldn't be serving USA (Lancelot).

Australia (Percival) should be focused on his King, the United Kingdom (Arthur) in his servitude.

Only then, will Australia (Percival) know the true experience of 'The Holy Grail'.

Australia (Percival) needs to shaft USA (Lancelot) who threw away the Holy Grail long ago, and give it the flick!

Excellent to see the song brought into the light again. It's an outstanding piece of poetry of music.

Those whining about how it "didn't need redoing" are obviously overlooking the fact that this new rendition exposes a whole new audience to the song ... and that they will in all likelihood have a listen to the original somewhere along the line as a result.

Would you prefer it buried?

I can only imagine how much you hated what The Herd did with it. But then again, you probably don't know about it.

I think the Herd Cover is much better.
Why? Because it's 'different' in the right way.

As is the slow-soft cover version by Sydney Watson.
This is the essence of Covering, unlike Tribute Bands who replicate the original down to a tee.

Schumann has basically 'Woked' his own song. Grin

It delivers its message like a bullet regardless of its interpretation. A version with the young soldier's (adult) daughter included reminds us of the multi-generational psychological damage done by war.

I think Schumann's Strine accent has taken that song far.
The Strine accent has more or less dissapeared from the cities and I only hear it occassionally the closer one gets to the Red Centre and mostly from rich Cockies, educated Researchers, Surveyors, etc.

If you look at the international 'reviewers' listening to that song for the first time. It's his accent that always captivates them above and beyond the song itself.

Strine - its a dying breed.

Very few were 'only nineteen' for a start, and all, including National Servicemen, were volunteers to actually go. These were and are MEN - not modern day parasites looking for a free ride... what they can get from an ungrateful government is what they deserve, and I add to that my policy that their tax free threshold over a lifetime of work should be higher as a result of active service.

What is shocking is how many were somehow - and this includes Iraq and Afghanistan - unemployable when they separated from service... there are various organisations started up and starting up to assist them to (gasps) transition(sic) into civilian work when they should be highly regarded as potential employees ... and that has a dreadful effect on a once-proud man, and often leads to depression, feelings of rejection and unworth and uselessness, unfounded regret for ever taking on the job (see BR-S), and often to family break-ups and eventual homelessness and so forth.

The same applies to even those who, often, have not done active service but served as what I call the Winter Soldiers - the ones prepared to stand in the line during the non-campaigning season.... ALL are necessary.

HONOUR your Veteran of active service... give him a fair break.. he IS a very competent person in the main and has attributes you will not often find in any employee, loyalty, integrity and preparedness to work - don't treat him like a child who needs to hide behind your skirts .... leave that to the politicians of this era.... they are so good at it.
