Markbygden is today the largest onshore wind farm in Europe with over 500 wind turbines. When it is fully developed in a few years, it will produce around 10 terawatt hours a year, the newspaper writes.

Parts of this are covered by Markbygden Ett, which operates 179 wind turbines. The company, which has the Chinese state as its largest owner, has made large losses over several years, according to DI.

DI further refers to a letter from Markbygden Ett to the Umeå district court, where it is written that the company’s payment difficulties are due to a very unprofitable power agreement the company has entered into with Hydro Energi.

Big loser

In 2017, E24 discussed the agreement between Hydro and Markbygden Ett. At the time, there was talk of purchasing annual power production of 1.65 terawatt hours for the period 2021 until 2040.

When the wind farm does not produce enough power, the company is forced to cover the deficit by buying power in the market.

This is precisely what has happened in the past year, and the company has therefore had to buy electricity at an expensive price, and sell it cheaply to Hydro Energi.
