Former Labor and union leader Bill Shorten has used his university vice-chancellorship to condemn extremist “echo chambers’’ and identity politics in academia.

Calling for conservative voices to be heard, the University of Canberra vice-chancellor said universities should be a “safe space for disagreement’’.

“I want universities to be a safe place, not just for progressive ideas but for conservative and progressive ideas to be contested,’’ he told The Australian.

...

He praised Deakin University vice-chancellor Iain Martin for speaking out against woke cancel culture in universities.

Writing in The Australian on Wednesday, Professor Martin – a former surgeon – said universities should focus on quality teaching as much as research.

Calling for respectful and rigorous debate, he said universities had a duty to “make students ready for challenging ideas, not to make those ideas safe for students’’.

Mr Shorten said he had phoned Professor Martin to congratulate him for speaking out.

“I said ‘Good on you.’ I was impressed that he did it.’’

Mr Shorten also suggested that politics has become a kill zone for new ideas. “I think politics goes too far – it’s moved the politics of adversarial debate to the politics of destruction,’’ he said. “I don’t think politics is necessarily providing a safe place to discuss long-term ideas.

“The problem with politics is that everything gets reduced into a ‘no’ campaign, and there’s certainly more polarisation happening.’’

Mr Shorten said universities should be places where people could debate “long-term thinking based on evidence’’.

“I don’t think identity really captures enough of the problem,’’ he said. “There’s polarisation where people sit in their own echo chambers talking to each other.

“There’s not enough meeting in the middle, where people can actually debate out their ideas.’’

Students are afraid to express divergent opinions in tutorials due to cancel culture, says Australian National University’s interim Vice-Chancellor, stating “respectful contestation” as one of the “greatest challenges” for the university’s future.

Staff teaching in areas where social values were debated and disputed, such as colonisation, had the same experience, she said.

Professor Rebekah Brown, speaking about the future of ANU at a community meeting, said the university needed to focus on “protecting a culture of openness” as part of its long-term strategy.

This has been the case for at least 2 decades but it has been intensified as the various outlandish pwogwessive idiocies have been left uncontested due to fears of aggression, ostracism, academic cancelling. The left simply cannot handle disagreement. It will label it nazism, white supremacy, sexism, colonialism, Islamophobia, climate denials,  wacism, privildge, ableism, Euro-centrism, whatever - label if to be beyond the pale so no debate will ned to be entered into. It is the tactic of every lazy, stupid, dogmatic screamer.
They are on the right side of theory and history and that's that.

Was deliberately turned that way at the end of the 1980's - to suit some feminist fantasy - again.

Beware woman - destroyer of worlds.

Once the fringe dwelling, borderline mental deficient quasi-intellectual 'feminists' got hold of everything and were enabled in doing so by the essentially weak Beta types who prevail in politics and business and legalese and so forth (the neo-Feudalists) for their own weak-knee'd soft-cock control over others - the 'norm' for any social discussion - any assertion or testing of views in free and open discussion, on any and every subject, has become more and more controlled by the growing numbers on the lunatic fringes.

This has been done as a matter of 'policy'........ you need to shake your heads until you wake up and ask why this is so ...

Once the barbarians with no real social conscience and riddled with an overwhelming sense of entitlement™ and some mythical 'cause' in 'seeking justice' which, naturally, devolved almost instantly into a savage revenge mission against a society that sheltered these assholes for generations, and primarily against the men in that society who have held the lines and the walls of our culture and civilisation for those generations... the writing was on the wall for the doom of the West as we know it - and its being over-run by the real-life barbarians of other 'cultures'.

Now mass immigration of barbarians has been added to the mix.... shakes your heads again until you wake up ...

The battle for the minds of your children and grand-children has been lost...... just look at the manifestations of The Madness that they embrace so freely. willingly and unthinkingly ...  a new curtain of darkness has fallen over the West..... I can offer you only endless years of sweat, tears, hostilities - brother against brother, family against sons and daughters - and even blood until Right once again shines across this Darkened Land....

Come with me if you want to live!!

A Labour MP was prevented from visiting a school in his constituency because the teaching unions and the Palestine Solidarity Campaign do not like the fact that he believes Israel should have a right to exist. The MP in question is Damien Egan, who represents Bristol North East and who is vice-chairman of the Labour Friends of Israel caucus – or, as it is almost certainly referred to within the party, Labour Friends of Genocide. We haven’t heard from Egan just yet – perhaps he is less cross about it than I am, or simply doesn’t want to make a fuss. The school in question is the Bristol Brunel Academy, the principal of which is a woman called Jen Cusack who should, of course, be sacked.

We know of this story only because Steve Reed, the Communities Secretary, who describes himself as a Zionist, mentioned it during an address to the Jewish Labour Movement, without naming Egan. Reed said of the people who had scuppered Egan’s visit: ‘They will be called in, and they will be held to account for doing that, because you cannot have people with those kinds of attitudes teaching our children.’

Well, Steve, there’s people with those kinds of attitudes teaching our children in pretty much every school in the country, save for a few free schools and some of those in the private sector, both of which you lot wish to abolish. In fact I cannot think of a single occupation more likely to be stocked with these pig-ignorant dunderheads than teaching, a calling which they gravitate towards because they are useless at everything else and also to acquire a soupçon of power which is otherwise wholly absent from their wretched, impotent lives.

Do you remember when teachers were clever, or some of them, at least? That was a long time ago. Just watch how they perform on quiz shows: denser than a block of tungsten and deprived of even the slenderest vestiges of general knowledge. They are also the bedrock of the Labour vote (as they once were the Tory vote), apart from those who are even more stupid and vote Green.

Anyway, the intimation was that Egan’s visit was cancelled because it might upset the teachers, not the kids.
