Type Halloween into Google and you get ghosts on your screen.
You can click on the ghost icon bottom/middle to make them return.

Coming to think of it… isn’t Halloween supposed to be trick or treat?
So we know what treats are…what are tricks supposed to be?

Oh? That’s silly then… people have right whether they want to be annoyed or not on Halloween.
What I found out is that here, if houses are not decorated or inviting in any way… they are no go zones. There are a lot of houses done up that are inviting so that’s where kids know to go.

I’ve heard 2 stories tonight re: Halloween. One hood and one not good.
2 x 10 yr old boys dressed up went to a house and heard a cry for help… an elderly woman fell and they saved the day!
The other story was someone had put rat sak cubes in rat sak paper amongst lollies.
They asked their mum if that was a trick?

I doubt very much that the second story is true.

I have no idea why we celebrate such a silly American event. It is a sad and sorry excuse for retailers to successfully sell chocolates and sweets (great for causing tooth decay and hyper kids)

With enough marketing - Australia might soon be caught up celebrating Thanksgiving next. That event should help sell lots of turkeys.

Totally agree Lisa.

In our little town, people who're happy to have kids
knocking on their doors sign up to a register okaying
it.  This means that with parental input, no kid turns
up at one's unlisted door wearing a Disney princess
or a Jack Sparrow outfit, begging for a free sugar fix.

In Mt Druitt. If you don't give the kids lollies for their piss-poor costume effort of a cigarette hanging from their mouths - they'll throw rocks at your windows and kill your pets.

No. As a kid, we found out that some Whalan kids did exactly that to at least three households.

I had to look up Whalan (in Western Sydney), and
found that 35% of the suburb's residents are
receiving some form of Centrelink benefit.     Seriously?

I had no idea such a suburb existed. It’s not even a bona fide suburb. It’s merely some God forsaken area out west full of paddocks.

Current population : 6000

Given AusGeoff’s figure - that means over 2000 of these people are on Centrelink.

I wonder what the crime stats are like.

Mt Druitt (and its suburbs like Whalan, Lethbridge Park, Shalvey, Bidwill, etc) was the traditional Sydney 'Houso' region. A secluded 'bubble' of suburbs that was known for its violent lower class populace. A high density of Housing Commission.
After 2000, more suburbs have emerged around the area, so its no longer 'isolated' and the 'culture' of the Houso has basically spread all around Sydney in many ways.
But for a long while, it was the worst place to live in Sydney.

I still remember 800 Police had to create a barrier between Bidwill and Plumpton because of the riots between the two suburbs. What started as a fight between the girls during a Hockey game escalated in full blown hundreds of kids brawling all over the place for a week along with packs of other kids from other suburbs joining in.

...still, nothing compared to what the Palestinian kids get up to.

Here ya go, Grapps...from Wiki.

One theory holds that many Halloween traditions were influenced by Celtic harvest festivals, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain, which are believed to have pagan roots.[17][18][19][20] Some go further and suggest that Samhain may have been Christianized as All Hallow's Day, along with its eve, by the early Church.[21] Other academics believe Halloween began solely as a Christian holiday, being the vigil of All Hallow's Day.[22][23][24][25] Celebrated in Ireland and Scotland for centuries, Irish and Scottish immigrants took many Halloween customs to North America in the 19th century,[26][27] and then through American influence various Halloween customs spread to other countries by the late 20th and early 21st century

"Woolwarts" and "Moles". Never heard of that type of name-calling for those stores. I have heard of "Piece-o Slutt" and "Humbley Slacks", etc. But, did not know that these stores you mentioned were so unpopular that they got heckled like that.

No, I doubt that either store, particularly used for groceries, have much interest in exploiting Halloween. I have seen Big W sell Halloween masks, etc. Have not been to Kmart in recent. But, I bet they did a low-scale Halloween theme, too.
