VPN
Oct 10th, 2023 at 5:49pm

I have Telstra Internet and connect to their network via their provided Smart 2 Router.   Telstra lock this router down to the point where you cannot change most of the settings, or add things like a VPN.  I have purchased a GL.iNet GL-A1300 (Slate Plus) Wireless VPN Encrypted Travel Router that will sit between the internet connection point and the telstra router.   This allows me to install my VPN so it will cover all devices that connect to the internet (rather than just running it on my laptop) and also change my DNS and gateway settings so I can access overseas channels like BBC on Demand, US Netflix and other services that are IP region restricted.    Does anyone on here use similar technology?   I mainly want to know if you can install various country IP Server config files and change them easily, or you can only have one server config file on the GL.iNet GL-A1300 at a time.   Regards, Vic

I sometimes use Tor browser, but I've tried a couple
of VPNs and they invariably slow down overseas
server connections.     Not worth the hassle IMHO.

I have binned Telstra and moved to Starlink. Much more efficient and cheaper too. I don't use a VPN but do use Tor on occasion. No problems at all.

Reasonable price and easy to choose various countries.

Telstra = $95 per month.   Starlink = $139 per month.

Plus, shock! horror!    $599 for Starlink hardware.

What sort of down/up speeds are you getting with Starlink?

Starlink hardware has come WAY down in price. I get 200:20 pretty constantly. The system occasinally stops working for a second or two.

Starlink setup cost was $199, monthly cost $139. Down 195.1, up 20.8

Telstra was costing $165 per month and was going up to $180 per month.  Frequent drop outs, Down 60.8, up 2.9

Add on to the Starlink cost $240 for 1 years pre-paid phone service and it works out at $159 instead of $180 per month for a much better service.

Well VIC, if your 8+ lanyards outranks my x7 lanyards, while in Canberra... then I can only say at this stage. "The best things in life, like the internet, are free!"

We're with Telstra's 50/20 FTTN plan using
50-year-old copper pair over the last 250m.

ATM, we get around 30 down and 6 up!    Angry

Laughably, Telstra claims 50 down and 17 up as
"typical" speeds from 7PM to 11PM in my locale.
We've never even approached that since day one
with these shysters.  We tried Aussie Broadband a
couple of years ago, and they were ultimately forced
to admit—despite their TV advertising claims—that
they couldn't do any better than Telstra.

     ...

Like all ISPs, Aussie Broadband lie blatantly about
the speeds they offer, as they're all limited ultimately
by the shit-stains at the NBN Co.

How it is that all these ISPs escape the attention of
both the ACCC and the TIO is beyond me.  Obviously
a lot of palm-greasing behind closed doors.
