Negative gearing is the boogieman of the jealous classes. It was talked up heavily until about 10 years ago by the dodgy financial advisers trying to sell any scheme they could take a cut from. They are the ones who pushed the term itself into common usage, or at least familiarity. But the only people who complain about it today are those who have no idea whether anyone else is actually doing it. In a generation it will fade from political debate.
