I tend to add a spoon of apple butter—just apples and spices (no butter.)

Must remember to soak the groats tonight and try them tomorrow night. No need for fridge —weather suddenly turned cold and rainy, had some lovely days before. (12–16°C is a lovely temperature especially when doing some work even just walking the dog. Over 18°C is not nearly as pleasant. Sounds contradictory but there you go, is what I find.)

I did once (had no milk I guess) make the oats with water. Not too bad but a tiny trifle watery—would do it again but only if unexpectedly out of milk. I don’t drink nut “milks.”

I tend to do 50/50 water milk (if I remember correctly - been a long time). can't tell the difference. But I drain it out if it isn't all soaked in and serve with milk Brown sugar at that time. if that makes sense.

Oatmeal to me is just rolled oats, a little milk, some honey for flavour, and then 2 minutes in the microwave on high. Mix it up. Eat it up.

With the weather getting warmer, I have had to switch over to cold milk breakfast options. Accidentally bought some Sultana Bites instead of the bran. They taste more like a sugary version of Sultana Bran.

Groats are the hulled kernels of various cereal grains, such as oat, wheat, rye, and barley. Groats are whole grains that include the cereal germ and fiber-rich bran portion of the grain, as well as the endosperm. Groats can also be produced from pseudocereal seeds such as buckwheat. Wikipedia

Oat groat porridge:

Quote:
You may be wondering, ‘what are oat groats’? Oat groats are whole oat kernels that have been cleaned of their inedible outer hull. They are a whole grain that is minimally processed, leaving them high in fiber, protein, and minerals.

Cooking method obviously shouldn’t stuff this concept up/

Quote:
Ingredients
3 cups water**
1 cup whole oat groats, rinsed
1 teaspoon salt
optional toppings, see notes

Fuck water, (cows) milk will do me!

Quote:
Stovetop Directions

Add the water, oat groats, and salt to a medium-sized saucepan. Bring the pot to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium and place the lid on the pot.

Cook for 45 minutes for a slightly chewy texture or 60 to 70 minutes for a soft, creamy texture.
If there is any liquid left in the pot, drain it off.

45 minutes? WTF? I can’t wait 45 minutes for breakfast!

Less processed—more cooking/ Ayaya!

Looks like mothra’s overnight soak OUTSIDE the fridge is the way to go, who knew?

I cup groats, 3 cups water, leave overnight.

Less processed = more cooking. Should have seen THAT coming!

3 cups water

in a bowl covered by a plate OUTSIDE of da fridge.

It breaks down the phytates in the oats, which are particularly high in phytates.

Phytates bind to essential minerals, like calcium, zinc, magnesium, copper ... and carry them out through the digestive tract. Soaking your oats not only prohibits this, it makes the nutrients in the oats themselves more digestible...

I didn't know about the phytates in oats.

Apparently, phytates themselves have some
health benefits, including anti-inflammatory
effects, and lowering a food's glycemic load
to a "low" 55.

Well, I soaked the groats overnight then couldn’t stand the thought of a 45min boil so made a quick bowl of semolina. Always liked semolina. Never liked oats tho had it forced on me as a boy in Holland (advice of my fave aunt to Mum.) Gave the oats away but, don’t remember how/why/when started eating porridge again as an adult.

Wonder how Anzac biscuits made with oat groats would go?
