I realise this may come as a shock to someone like you, but people usually buy investments with the intention of making money, not just losing money in order to reduce their tax bill. In fact I don't think you can reduce your income tax by losing money on your investment property.

What needs to be chopped is concessional capital gains on property, since clearly encouraging investment is not resolving the needs for actual housing. Negative gearing applies to any business venture - I got it with a theatre production company.

As usual - I have a plan .............................. (motherhood statement first) stamp out investors clawing the guts out of the available properties while blasting the cost of housing and of homing into the stratosphere - and put more Australian families into their own home as an immediate - let me say INSTANT - priority!! This may hurt some people short term, but it is now their turn, after decades of unwarranted profit - in the barrel of taking it on the chin!!
