Knowing the pricing of this breed, I'd be guessing this
bloke had stolen it, and was simply housing it in order
to make a huge profit after it reached early adulthood.

I checked French bulldog ads in Melbourne, and they
ranged from $2,550 to $5,000 with an average of
around $3,500.

Really sad when this sort of thing happens. Back in my late teens, our low-life neighbours took off, leaving their cat behind to fend for itself and no food. My sister gave it food, and the cat decided that it wanted to be my sister's friend. A few days later, the neighbours came back and took the cat with them. I suppose it probably is dead, by now.
