Keeping Your Petrol Car Better Than Buying an EV?
Jun 5th, 2023 at 8:27am

An interesting article from Rowan Atkinson, who has a degree in
electrical and electronic engineering

I love electric vehicles – and was an early adopter. But increasingly I feel duped.

Quote:
In advance of the Cop26 climate conference in Glasgow in 2021,
Volvo released figures claiming that greenhouse gas emissions
during production of an electric car are 70% higher than when
manufacturing a petrol one
.   How so? The problem lies with the
lithium-ion batteries fitted currently to nearly all electric vehicles:
they’re absurdly heavy, many rare earth metals and huge amounts of
energy are required to make them, and they only last about 10
years. It seems a perverse choice of hardware with which to lead the
automobile’s fight against the climate crisis.

Which is why the the Tesla Model Y starts at AU$68,900 —in
comparison to an IC-engined Kia Picanto S for AU$18,890.

Is there 50 grand difference  between these two when most of
our driving is metro around 20,000km pa average?

My eldest daughter is pushing for an electric car because of course all her friends are getting one sigh. I’d like to text her some information from this topic before she commits her money if that’s ok.

Imagine your Electricity Bill when you get home and plug your vehicle up for a charge.

This is a desperate attempt of diversional tactics by Industries caught out for production of 'Pollution'.

Electric one day, hydrogen the next, after comes irridium, then the blood of koala's.

I doubt I'll ever own an electric vehicle.

My next car will be a V8.  Probably a Mustang.

I'm going in for a second test-drive of this one tomorrow (today is a public holiday):

Yes.

But he has to pay for it or sexually assault women in order to get it.

So,  we can see why you admire (relate to) him so much.

Lithium batteries last for 2500-3000 cycles before they die. It doesn't matter if they're in a laptop, phone or car lithium batteries have a defined life.
Electric cars would be lucky to last 10 years before they're worthless.

Most late model cars would last around 15 years before they get expensive to own. The engine-gearbox etc will be fine it's all the electronic stuff like touchscreens etc that will die.

The AEB (automatic emergency braking) systems newer cars run will cause problems in future. A Mercedes a friend owns broke a windscreen in the country Obriens replaced the screen. They couldn't recalibrate the AEB camera so the car had brakes jammed on couldn't release them had to winch it onto a truck and tow it 300km+ back to Mercedes dealer.

My next new car will probably be Subaru WRX or BRZ in manual because they don't have that rubbish like AEB. Manuals are cheaper long term auto services can add up over the years.

If you want a cheap car to run get a Toyota Hybrid Corolla (sedan) or Camry.

My SS Torana is 45 years old much cheaper to own than any newer car very little to go wrong. It's now worth 10X what i paid for it.

A realization is emerging that there is going to be a mountain of EV batteries going into landfills eventually because as yet there is no possibility of recovery or recycling obviously because it is not yet profitable.

Same realization is emerging for solar panels.

Disposal of wind turbine blades is already expensive and problematic.

Good point Ausgeoff. That's why people are moving away from petrol cars. Because of the GHG's emitted during production.
