Are we alert (but not alarmed) yet?

Are we going to see front page newspaper stories about this?

Spoiler alert: No.

Nurse dies after contracting Nipah virus with no cure and ‘epidemic potential’

Quote:
A 25-year-old nurse in India has died after contracting the Nipah virus, senior health officials in the country have warned.

The Indian government had confirmed two cases of the disease, which has no cure or vaccine and is classified as a high-risk pathogen by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Quote:
Various countries have introduced Covid-style checks in their airports following concerns over the virus, which is fatal to between 40 and 75 percent of people who contract it.

Passengers arriving at airports are being monitored for fever and viral symptoms, while a 'Health Beware Card' can be issued to travellers who arrive from risk areas urging them to seek immediate medical attention if they develop any of the symptoms associated with Nipah virus.

Does that include Australia? Probably not. Nothing will be done until it is too late. Can't have anything causing the airlines and airports to lose money now, can we?

As I've said before - might be time to stock up on 'essentials' and get ready to 'bunker down' for a few months. Especially with the 'superflu' that's been ravaging the US probably already here just waiting to 'explode' over winter.

Yeah, right.

I'm betting that if I took a quick trip up to Perth Airport right now and asked some of the staff about the Nipah virus they wouldn't have a clue. "What's that?". "Never heard of it".

And, in the unlikely event that they do get a clue I'm sure it won't amount to much more than handing out Nipah virus "information leaflets" to travellers arriving from overseas which, just like the Covid leaflets they were handing out 4-5 years ago, will be promptly tossed (unread) into the nearest bin.

Disgraceful (and irresponsible) stuff.

Nothing in today's The West Australian about Nipah. No surprise there.

However, they've managed to print a small story about more measles right at the bottom of page 18.

Hmm, if people arriving from overseas are being monitored for fever and viral symptoms by the airports (so they say) then how come these measles cases are getting through all the time and we're only finding out about them nearly a week later after these people have been out and about in the community?

We are going to be so screwed if (when?) the Nipah virus goes on a worldwide rampage.

I seem to recall hearing the exact same thing about SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) six years ago.

20 million (at least) dead plus countless long Covid cases later and it's still going.

I imagine governments and big business are going to have to work really, really hard to convince the population that a virus (Nipah) with no treatment, no vaccine and a 40 to 75 percent fatality rate is "gone" or  "just a cold" like they've managed to do with Covid.

Carl, your life would be totally empty and meaningless without covid.

How did you manage before covid? What filled the enourmous Covid shaped whole in your life?

Got anything useful to contribute, Frank?

Nah, didn't think so.

Now, off you go back to the America section. I need a good laugh right now.
