Socks
Apr 19th, 2023 at 2:35pm

Stopped off to let Socks have a run on the beach. She outdid herself!

For starters, just to warm up like, she outran a whippet! Whippets are what is known as amazingly fast runners. Bah, Socks outran the whippet with contemptuous ease. She then jumped to the top of a 1.5m sand cliff as if it was a few inches high.

She nearly got herself into a world of pain: there was an angler on the beach with a salmon rod. He either had a real or artificial fish on the end of his line—Socks tried to jump to grab that fish! Luckily the salmon fisher moved the lure out of Sock’s reach.

More lure coursing tomorrow.

I am going to try and have someone film it on my mobile: I can’t do it, have my hands full holding Socks until the bags have started moving and the course leader gives the “Tallyho!” command—I let go of Sock’s collar as soon as I hear the T of Tallyho!

Could ask someone else to do it on their phone or video camera I suppose.

Just gave Socks a light breakfast. Recommendation is for dogs not to be fed until say 30 minutes after their last run.

Bah, 5.22am now and her first run cannot be before 9.30am—be no food in her stomach by then! She is skinny because of those hard to kill intestinal worms, not going to starve her! Must take some kibble with me to give her some more food after her last run.

Geez, I could have strangled the bitch! Whining, jumping up all the time, barking very loudly, not a pleasure to be around. After her run, mediocre for her, I warmed her down then put her in the car and left her there for a couple hours.

Her second run was better but nothing like her second run Easter Saturday but I still heard “She can run!” she can that!

I don’t know what brought on the histrionics but next run she is in the car until 5 mins before her run.

Went a bit further afield after the event, bought some more gobsmackingly good raspberry jam and incredibly tasty raspberry sauce, nice and tart and fruity, not supersweet, yuck! Well, I had driven like 120Km to get to the meet, why not go another 21Km?

Sorry—no photos or video of Socks’ runs will be posted here. Blame Booby, blame the totally lax “moderation” here.

Already have the photos from Saturdays run! That is quick!

One photo shows a lovely tangle of long legs—you wonder how she can untangle them. Visible only on my fine forum, sorry!

Trials are to start late August or September. That’ll be fun.

Thousands of whippets and greyhounds, some German Shepherds . . . and Socks.

Going to have to program some long walks and maybe twice weekly visits to the beach so she can run!

Will make an appointment with the vet, finally get rid of her intestinal worms! Persistent buggers they are! Get her in peak condition by the time trials start.

Poor Socks! I guess the tablet has killed the worms in her intestine leaving the lining of the intestine a bit torn I guess. I thought that would happen yesterday but it happened today, after a big meal (I made her fast yesterday.)

Will see how she is tomorrow.

We know Socks is a wizz at lure coursing, following the lure with speed, intelligence and concentration. However, she is a dog, hound, so should be able to use her nose.

So I will see if there is a dog tracking club near here somewhere.

Hmm for trials I might need to join the Kennel club for this state. That is to get state level certification of her titles as she wins them.

For tracking the dog needs to be away from its owner a bit and be free to move around searching for then track. So the lead for tracking is ten metres long. A lead that big can’t be fastened to the collar without strangling the dog, so the dog has to be in a narness like for in the car and the lead is attached to that.

(Up until the 12th century horses pulled carts etc harnessed like bullocks—the harness pulled against the horse’s throat, choking it! The dog harness performs a similar function to the horse collar—pressure is on the chest not the throat.)

This morning as I led Socks out for her poop’n’pee walk a wallaby was racing up my street to the scrub just a bit further up the hill. Had to hold the mutt VERY firmly! Her breed was called “kangaroo dog” until roo hunting with dogs was outlawed. See “The Loaded Dog” a funny short story by Henry Lawson.

Took Socks to the local—only 65Km away—obedience class. Did pretty damn well, even did the automatic sit few other dogs managed!

Even did an exercise where the lead is removed from the dog, someone holds her and you run to the far end of the reserve and the owner runs away then calls the dog that gets released. First time Socks just enjoyed running but the second time, with me calling her while running she was pretty good, soon back on the lead.

The bitch was the same today as last time. I walked her for 15 minutes before her run, quieted her right down—must remember this when trials start.

Were a few terriers there, slow but followed the bags assiduously around the course—high prey drive in most terriers, wish I had known of this when Demi was alive and fit, give her a non-destructive outlet for her high prey drive, give her a great run!

Some whippets do not have high prey drive. Lots of amusement watching owners try to get their hounds to follow the bags. Some may just have been young.

I told someone there that Socks had outrun a whippet on the beach—polite disbelief. Ha!

Socks’ second run. Like a honey colored bullet after the bags, ZZZZZOOOOMMMMM!!!!!

Bitch got stuck into the bags when they were stopped at the end of the run—nothing wrong with her prey drive! I tried to get the lead on her, she pulled this bag, pulled the wire back like a bowstring, let go, hit my feet, luckily no power in it. Had ot conquer laughter before putting the lead on.

Lots of congratulations of Socks! Oh yeah, bitch can run!

Heh, driving down, up on the high bit—car thermometer read -1°C, later -2°C. Oh yeah!

I was going to go for a drive on Monday night. I wanted to check conditions on the coolest morning of the year, just to test a theory. The forecast has been changed to 6°C on Tuesday morning. That will be close-the-windows-type weather. But I see that Tasmania not only has the cold, but also the rain.

Seriously? I tried to sleep in the morning with 12°C minimum temperature outside. I had to hide under the doona to keep warm. Monday night, I will be closing the windows of the house.

My parents' dogs will have their coats on and tents set up for them that night.

Took Socks to the local beach, removed her lead. Man, did she have fun.

The “tropical dog” (according to the limp wristed poof (LWP)) had a blast, in the sea or on the dunes, long as she could RRRRRRRUN! Found some kelp washed ashore a couple weeks ago, killed it stone dead  Smiley  Smiley   Smiley

Did walk at least 2Km out and back again. Some interactions with other dogs but their cruel owners kept them on the leash—on a leads off permitted beach! Let dogs be dogs FFS! No seagull was permitted to stand on the beach LOL. 31Kg of charging canine put the gulls to flight alright!

Socks got a bit tiresome when it came time to put the lead on again. Forgot to get a couple Schmackos before heading off, dammit!

Technician came here in the morning to instal the new electricity meter. I thought I heard the thump of the meter box closing so went to the front, chatting with the tech. Must have moved out of the door because suddenly—nothing happened! Then Socks tore through the space I had left—careless Monk!

ah well, no harm done. Tech was impressed by how beautiful she is and her stance when standing—very alert. Bit cold out so not too hard to get the dog back inside.

Off to the coast today, do some shopping. On the way back will stop at the beach I can let Socks run off-lead. She loves it! I walk 4Km, Socks runs 15Kms  Grin

Weekend after this one, another dog event, want socks to chase the hare at her fastest speed yet. I have a training regime:

1. Two 5Km walks a week

2. Two 4Km walks on the beach (2Km out, 2Km return to the car.)

Hilarious!

Got on the beach, two kelpies there. The older one decided to chase Socks. Poor fool.

Not only did Socks outrun him by a ridiculous margin she jumped onto a sandbank over a metre high. The kelpie tried to follow her example, got his front legs on the top of the bank then had to scrabble furiously with his backlegs to get to the top. Socks then promptly jumped down and ran into the water.

Hilarity, incl by the owner of the kelpies.

Took the mutt for a short walk. This involved making our way to a prominent hill. Well, Socks starts sniffing and looking. I look around and see a small wallaby. When Socks saw it it was quite a job to hang on to the lead!

Socks is mostly staghound. These used to be called “kangaroo dogs.” Dunno how it would have gone if Socks had pulled the lead out of hand? Wallabies are fast, can jump fences etc. If Socks caught up to the wallaby then what? They do have claws and strong back legs. hope I don’t find out!

Drove down to near Hobart for a lure coursing meet. As always the bitch was excited, barking, pulling hellaciously on the lead etc—so many dogs! She knew she would be running at top speed too!

Well, her first run—she did well I thought and plenty of congrats on a good run etc. Also comments “improved greatly” so she is getting the hang of how the lure moves, shortcuts etc.

My two long walks in town and two visits to the beach each week must be strengthening her muscles.

She is flaked out by the electric heater now  Grin Grin Grin

Poor dear. I gave her a light breakfast at 5.30am, she had no food until I bought her a sausage roll at 3.30pm—instructions say to give the dog no breakfast but she eats at 5.30am, the very first run she can do is not until 9.30 so why not a light breakfast four hours before that?

Another lure coursing meet tomorrow. Hope weather conditions are OK for the drive! Weather forecast for the actual meet are fine, a tropical 13°C and slightly clouded skies.

Fog is not fun but that is only for the first 25K or so, then higher ground and while I can see banks of fog they are not on the road.

Hmmm, 8.33am and Socks is lying in her bed, well wrapped and warm but no interest in food or going outside for her morning pee.

Probably the worming tablet she got yesterday. She won’t get any food today tho I might give her some cooked pumpkin (bought, not cooking that vile veg here!) to ease her tummy tonight. The lining of the intestines gets hit by the worming tablet.

Drove to this town that has this huge park where Socks can run. Conditions were fine, mostly sunny, 14°C, but a nasty cold wind was blowing so instead of walking the open field I took the track along the creek for about a kilometre. Suddenly! Bang! A hare comes charging along beside the path, 30Kg of charging staghound in VERY hot pursuit, by god, she was pounding!

The hare was not pulling away from Socks, no way! But a tree + shrubs etc was close by and the burrow must have been in there else Socks would have had lagomorph for an early dinner.

By christ that dog was running and deadly serious! Just—Wow!

Socks is (mostly) staghound and staghounds were bred to be poachers’ dogs.

LOLOLOLOL You should read the crap the junky and the moron are saying about Socks’ little adventure yesterday  Grin Grin Grin

The junky hoped Socks would be destroyed. Guess reality finally percolated into what is left of his mind that he cannot steal (“rescue”  Grin Grin Grin) my lovely sweet and beautiful dog. The jealousy must be fierce!

A 30Kg dog does not belong in a tiny tenth story squalid Housing Commission flat. Doubt he has enough money to feed her or the energy to walk the dog 2–5 Kms daily.

The hate, the jealous rage continues.

A total lack of logic by the junky and the moron turned the description of Socks chasing a hare—very natural dog behavior as anyone with a brain (so that leaves out Booby) not damaged by drugs (so that leaves out Larry) would understand.

So those two clowns turn a description of a chase of a hare by a hound and soon enough the wish for Socks to be killed by order of a magistrate appears. Fu
cking
sick.

Of course, I stir the pot:

“I would be delighted
IF
Socks
WERE
to kill 10 bloody cats EVERY DAY!”
and predictably the moron and the junky miss the qualifiers and go headlong down the slope to nowhere.

Clearly Larry is wildly jealous that I have the gorgeous, sleek, sweet Socks and he has. . .a drug dealer and Booby has. . .no brain. That has turned very dark with wishes that Socks be destroyed etc. Stay off the drugs, kids, or you may end up like Larry if you don’t end up dead from the drugs.

The number of people that love cats far outweigh those that don't. The last person I knew who was fiercely anti-cat was my housemate. But, he was all talk.

I was witness to someone who deliberately mounted the footpath with his car to kill a neighbour's cat. That cat ran back to its owner's house to succumb to its injuries. Mum had to go explain what happened.

My last dog (before I moved out) had made it his duty to chase off neighbourhood cats that were not our family's cats. But, even then, he did not try to kill any of the cats. Mum and Dad's current dogs have a reputation for being very territorial. But, they are not about to go kill off neighbourhood cats.

I have to agree with Bobby, here. It seems rather crazy to like the idea of a pet dog killing cats.

Booby is a brainless idiot and troll.

I would LOVE to have the feral cat population reduced. That is ALL I am saying there really, if you read my statement there a bit carefully.

10 cats—feral cats—a day? Wouldn’t scratch the surface!

Are those places 'outside?'

Here is as good a place as any—and Socks did live there for a few short months.

My former neighbor back in Adelaide texted me a photo of where Mum’s house was—all bulldozed and removed.

I was a bit worried about squatters (had seen them in a house just a couple of streets away) so had the lawn mown the day before settlement took place and took a photo of the neat lawn. No worries about squatters anymore! (Unless they bring tents but no blowback on me anymore so they can go their hardest for all I care.)

Did I say Larry was jealous of me for having a beautiful, good and sweet dog like Socks? Well in the sewer the junky gave me a spray.

1. The drug addict did not like that my avatar here is Demi, my rascally terrier who died a few years ago. None of his fucking business what I choose as avatar!

2. Then this attention whore said I lied about my Mother. Like, WTF? She was old, had dementia and died in 2021. What combination of drugs and jealousy makes someone say something so untrue?

3. It seems Socks is, well, he has said Socks is not my dog and how the junky worked that out is a mystery. It is based on pure jealousy, Larry not having a dog at all.

Wonder if Aussie has the decency to give Larry a nice long holiday from something starting to stink like a real life sewer!

Clearly—nothing Larry says about himself and other members can be believed!

Have a look in the early pages, Herbert adoring his cats for 4000 posts. I am much more catholic than that, talking about breeds of dogs, our Homo and pre-Homo ancestors, environmental issues because we do not have an Environment board, the odd animal videos etc. I have added gardening too.

Keeping a bit of the Herbert spirit—I also talk about my lovely dog Socks.

You are talking to yourself, with the occasional drop-in like me saying you are talking to yourself.
Almost all the threads in Cats are started by you and end with your opening post because nobody cares. Or if not, they have a few more posts by you and end with a post by you. It's your sad little sandpit. You are constantly throwing parties and nobody ever turns up - or if they do stumble in, it's  only to shuffle their feet awkwardly, mutter something inane to fit the tenor of the OP and then, realising the banality, quickly leave.

Sad.

Yup, way too many forums, several do not have a Mod tho they are supposed to be Member Run Boards.

The Barnacle who was the Mod for Atheism has left, disgusted by the crap in Environment and Coronavirus boards, and no new Mod has been selected or the Atheism board merged with Philosophy. Ditto Sad Kangaroo and the Fringe board he modded.

Environment is a waste of space modded by a gullible numpty—this board could easily be renamed Environment, Critters and Gardens and the existing Environment board hidden.

Health and Womens’ Issues could be merged with Kat as Mod of the combined boards.

Etc—merge the Party boards with Politics.

Yesterday—11°C max with a nasty wind blowing. Drove Socks to that big park and let her out, off leash. Zoom, to the river, christ she can run! Two big ducks quickly swam to the far bank on sighting Socks, Socks wanting after them but not caring or daring to go in.

Shivering in the cool wind I head to the track next to the river, Socks racing along with not a puddle in the track missed. to the end of the track, back and up into the field, some running (by Socks) and back to the car, Socks stinking of the mud she had taken care to run in  Grin

Sock showed absolutely no sign of being cold but I was cold despite several layers of clothing incl thermal underwear  Smiley Smiley Smiley

Well, a Lure Coursing meet today.

As always, Socks bloody tiresome—excited so barking, whining, jumping up, pulling on the lead etc—pretty much all dogs are like that, excited because they can see/smell/hear all the other dogs there and after a meet or two they know they are going to run like blazes!

First run—I thought average but was enthusiastically praised “as fast as any whippet!” Not bad but I was thinking “whippet snippet, she can do better!” So after lunch—well, I went to see what number they were up to, we were number 24 and I wanted to see what number the current dog was doing. I had left Socks in the car. It was a lovely day with full sunshine—how Antarctic like, NOT Cheesy —so I had all the windows open incl right front window open, ohh 20cm? 25?

Suddenly I hear “Escaped!” Yup, despite her really deep chest the bloody dog had managed to squeeze through the narrow space. Back in the car, looked at the number, ah we are up after 1 or two other dogs.

So, get the mutt, walk her to warm her body up, head to the queue and soon enough we were in the ring—a huge showgrounds oval. Lead off, firm hand on her collar, walk her up to the start position. “Tallyho!” and I let her go.

Well, her speed and concentration caused jaws to drop. Far out she was fast! So glorious to see! Any whippets running at the same time would have been eating Sock’s dust!

Took Socks to the beach–I keep the lead on her until I can see if anyone is already on the beach. Nobody was so lead off and ZZZZOOOOOOMMMMMM!!!!!!!! the bitch ran. Christ she can run!. I walked, with the dog doing zoomies for maybe a Km? Bit less, maybe half a kilometre? Saw the dog trying to pick up a big stone so with a treat enticed her to me with a treat, put her lead on and we walked back to the car.

Dammit, dunno how she got the idea but somehow she tries to pick up a biggish stone—pretty much all are flat due to erosion of course—then RUN with it in her mouth! Saw her do that several weeks ago, shuddered thinking of the damage that stone could do to her beautiful white teeth and we have not visited the beach since until today. Will stay away from the beach for the rest of this year.

As I mentioned in “What a transformation” thread I had a honking big Saxon woodburning heater installed. A real beauty!

Suddenly I noticed Socks wanted to go for a lot more walks than usual.

Socks doesn’t like the heater, is afraid of it. Possibly something happened to her in the 19 or so weeks before I adopted her from the RSPCA. Being wet weather I have 3 wooden chairs lined up in front of the fire with clothing on them to dry. This means she doesn’t actually see the fire and is a bit more relaxed. Good!

I have some old sheets (I got so many sheets I could set up a sheety shop  Cheesy ) and will keep the chairs there after their use as substitute Hills Hoist with a sheet across their backs, do that for a week or two and Socks should be reconciled.

Tomorrow to the local big smoke and a walk along the river while the car gets new tyres and brakepads. I was told 90 minutes  so a two hour walk it will be, 2.5 hours if the weather is nice and brisk. Will do some shopping once I have the car back (so I can park Socks) for food incl some rib racks for the smoker and a flea and tick treatment for Socks.

Ticks were not something I worried about in Adelaide but there are some nastys on the east coast so I rigorously apply the flea and tick treatment.

Ahahaha poor Socks.

Loud sounds of chainsaws—HEAP of trees along the fence being cut down. One of the wielders living just down the street, has two border collies. Left Socks inside mostly—over the west fence is a field belonging to a Booby type who shoots dogs on his field to be the BIG MAN—hence I am careful not to let Socks run around too much off lead.

But did take her outside to interact with these dogs. Socks not really utilising this being HER territory and bossing the border collies, did let the lead go—with two blokes and two dogs here Socks was NOT going to stray—and we saw an exhibition of VERY FAST RUNNING!

LOL! Socks DOES so love being able to run fast and far. Did get away a bit and charged along and over the connecting road leading to the highway, luckily no cars. I do so LOVE to see my beautiful dog running at incredible speed, faster than any whippet, faster than almost any dog other than a race-trained greyhound.

Doesn’t just run, in running she really POUNDS the ground with her paws, man, the SOUND of her running when she does that running just past me BANG BANG HAMMER!

Reason for all the chainsawing—so a 1.8m high fence can go up around the back part of the backyard. Finish that tomorrow. Sunday, when I am running Socks in a Fun Run, some earthmoving is done.

Orchard getting closer to reality!

Obedience lesson today.

The recall: sit the dog, tell it WAIT with voice and hand command, then walk off. Last week I walked about half the width of the park, about 10m. Today I walked to the other side and turned around—dog was sitting at the start, hadn’t followed me etc, not twitchy.

Gave the dog the recall command and I then the rest of the class burst out laughing: Socks just sat there like the bloody Sphinx! A second command did the trick. Then sit, Wait and I walked back to the original side, turned around and shouted “Come!” again. The Sphinx again.

Still, brilliant performance by a dog with high separation anxiety. Much praise by me and the class instructor.

Oh yeah, unremarked by all except me but Socks obeyed the Drop command even tho I forgot to grab some soft treats. Drag down on the lead telling her Drop! with voice and hand command.

Might put Socks in the Lure Coursing Trial later this year.

Dependson cost—not the $25 entry fee but think have to join the Tassie Kennel Club (or whatever it is called) and $90 is a bit much—will be alright when trialling in obedience etc as well as lure coursing.

Definitely not entering the trial. cost all up will be close to $150, not counting the petrol to drive there and back.

But a fun run is coming up and Socks will get her two runs! Man does she LOVE running really fast!

Well, went to the fun run but it was crap.

HUGE delay before starting, I was pissed off, Socks was pissed off.

Mediocre run before lunch (for people not dogs!) after lunch during her run I heard “Slow the bags” which NEVER had to be said for Socks before!

Ah well, having travelled all that way I drove a bit further and bought some incredibly good raspberry jam and lovely tart raspberry syrup, then onto Bunnings for a heap of stuff then home again.

Think everything could have been managed better and I include me and Socks in that.

Ah well, better run. next time!

Holy crap, that dog can FART!

Previously, my dainty little chihuahua, Tiffany, was the dog with the worst farts, really bloody bad! Boisterous tomboy Demi, over 3 times Tiffany’s weight (8.5Kg v 2.5Kg) was a tyro at the farting game.

Enter the new champion, Socks! Much more weight and size to give real OOMPH and
VOLUME
to posterior exhalations. God, her farts
stink!

Booby REALLY liked reading the above post on dog farts.

Meantime, I am expecting an important phone call so told Socks we weren’t going for a walk.

She is now in her bed, sulking, her back firmly towards me. No difficulty conveying that she is pissed.

Took the mutt to the big park again today!

When we got there—we had company! A lady about my age was letting her kelpy–bull mastiff cross have a run there. The two dogs did the polite “sniff each other’s arse” thing but Socks wanted to run! So she did.

I chatted with the lady while we slowly strolled along the park. Both of us moved here at about the same time, both on 2 acres but different towns.

The kelpy–bull mastiff looked like an oversize kelpy with the wrong head, just like Socks is a hound with the wrong head (pretty much the right weight and size for a staghound tho.)

Looked like it might rain so we headed back to our cars. Bugger! Socks grabbed the ball the lady was throwing for her mutt and would not give it back. So we stood there chatting, waiting to get the dogs into the car. Very pleasant BUT I could feel this big fart wanting to enter the real world and I did not want to disgrace myself. Who hasn’t been in this situation?

I managed to release arse gas discreetly, Socks eventually let the kelpy get its ball back and we both headed to our respective homes.

Nice.

Eating a late second breakfast or brunch—asparagus spears wrapped in prosciutto—and dropped a bit of asparagus onto the floor. Live in floor cleaner aka Socks sprang into action, gulp and the sparrowsguts was gone. Ummm is asparagus good for dogs?

American Kennel Club—COOKED asparagus is fine, raw is too rough.

Then the interesting bit since I want to grow a fair bit of asparagus: dogs should not eat asparagus fern, the leafy bit above the spear. OK, work out where the hell to plant it—Tassie a bit cold for it—and maybe have it in the poly tunnel or a separate cloche? Protect the asparagus from the cold and the dog from the fern at the same time.

Re the veg patch—there is an area 3m wide by 27m long where I will have a few crab apple trees to pollinate the orchard next to it. Part of the polytunnel or greenhouse will be in this space. Enclose that area on both sides and put a few chooks there.

The vege patch will therefore be fully fenced off from the dog and the chickens will have a nice big area to roam in. Truly fresh, free range eggs! Best eaten 3 days after laying. No rooster!

Due to some changes to the apple orchard* the strip of land between orchard and vege patch will be FOUR metres wide! 4 x 27 = 108 square metres.

Deduct 10sqm for trees, polytunnel we have 98sqm for three chooks. That is 98/3 ≈ 33sqm per chook.

3sqm is considered free range, my chooks will have 33sqm! Free bloody range alright!

In early to mid spring I might have the chooks in a portable roost not in the normal run but in the orchard: any codlin moth trying to crawl out the ground and up the trunk of MY trees will make a chook’s breakfast!

*Change was first row 4m not 3m from side fence, rows start 2m not 3m from back fence. Change worked VERY well!

Socks is not 100% happy with me—she is on a diet.

Thinking of other things I had not noticed that intestinal worms no longer ate some of her food—she had put on a nice coat over her ribs. So I am slowly causing her to lose that coat.

Since she loves running really fast letting her get too fat would be cruel.

From 28.7Kg she is down to 27.7Kg, bit more to go yet.

Hmmmm another visit to the big empty park.

Pulled up, had a careful look around—a family with a couple toddlers was there, so Socks was on the lead until some turns and tiny hills were between us and the two toddlers. Socks behaved VERY badly towards a toddler in the local recreation ground here so she is no longer allowed off-lead there.

But eventually took the lead off—BIG MISTAKE! Now, I am pretty conscientious in picking up after Socks (or Demi, Tiffany or Kandi) but some unconscionable BASTARD on a horse let his horse SHIT in the park and did NOT pick up!

Dogs love to roll on smelly <stuff> but they don’t like what comes after, stupid animals! Socks got a hosing down at the park and a more thorough bath once home.

That is not the fun bit: Socks LOVES running in {shallow} water and, as I have said before, there is a river along one side of the park. Silly bitch would run around then JUMP into the river, the shallow bank, with a splash then run in the river for the bit known to be shallow.

Socks did have a grand time. She did NOT like either bath she got, too bloody bad! Took some videos but none really good but I will see what I can put together to post on my fine forum, not here with stinking thieves like Booby given licence to steal and troll and doxx to their hearts content.

Well done Socks!

Today had made an appointment at the vet for Socks’ annual checkup and vaccinations. Got there in time to toilet walk the mutt up and down the street and report in in plenty of time.

Socks weighs about 26.6Kg, a good weight.

I mentioned sometimes dark stools (could be blood in the alimentary canal) and golden urine—too dark. I agreed to the cost of a blood test and the consult together—$300.

So Socks got taken out of the room and blood got taken. I did not hear the tiniest whimper from my lovely dog! Not one!

Vets don’t know dog breeds too well, asked if I was sure she was a staghound not a greyhound—explained a (pure breed) staghound was 50% greyhound, so no worries.

Eventually Socks is returned to me—rather excited and restless, bits of loud barking.

She got the heartworm vaxx orally then the three year parvo vaxx via injection—not a whimper from Socks! Proud of her!

Heh, I described Demi objecting violently to the heartworm vaxx injection, being muzzled then eating treats THROUGH the muzzle while being injected and not caring—there was FOOD!

Also mentioned my dainty chi Tiffany: some stupid vet just stuck a needle in her side, didn’t ask me for help first, didn’t do it into a fold of skin between her shoulders. Well, he got a mouthful of needles—not hard, just enough to register a protest. Next year this former rugby-playing young guy starts muzzling Tiffy in yards of fabric. I jeered openly at him—this big man muzzling the tiny dog!

Heh, I am sure the vets could have told me stories—but the next patient was there. The vets were sure impressed with Socks’ sweet nature, stoicism and beauty.

Got home, quick walk up and down the street for Socks then DONDER EN BLITZEM!

Got inside, walked with an armful of groceries to the lounge, switched the lounge light on, walked through to the kitchen and was stacking perishables in the fridge when I noticed—fridge light not on!

Checked the lounge—lounge light not on! Hmmm!

Grabbed phone—my street had no power due to lightning.

Had some of the loudest thunder I have ever heard a while ago!

On Twitter I chat to a bloke with early onset dementia. He has an assistance dog called Margo—she has been on plane flights like Sydney–Adelaide in the cabin.

So he posts about his dog and some, like me respond.

I posted at about 7.30 that “Madame” was having a “lie in” and it was 30 minutes past her regular breakfast time. Then I posted she finally got up just before 8.00am, an hour after breakfast time.

Margot is a dog really into licking, like washing his head. In contrast, Socks has given me ONE lick so far this year!

Was in Launceston this morning—Harvest Farmers’ Market. After my marketing I drove to a dog park I had looked up—was even on the way home. TomTom got me to the dog park no probs.

Slightly disconcerting—a warning sign about snakes. Ummm {Gulp} OK.

Through the gate, take the lead off Socks, ZZZOOOOOMMMMMM!!!!!! off she goes. Get into the park proper—a bull mastiff cross American Staffy is there, starts chasing Socks. I relax and chat with the 3-4 other dog owners there (numbers change, some leave, some arrive.) No concern about Socks—no lumbering mastiff is going to catch her and the dogs are just having fun anyway—no growling or snarling, just dogs having fun playing chasey.

There is a rather overweight Jack Russell there, a really sweet dog, just wants cuddles, pats and scratches just above the tail—I am happy to oblige.

Then Socks discovers the river—the dog park is on one bank of the North Esk River. She *** LOVES *** running through water, as long as it is not too deep.

At the end I see my girl panting deeply—had a lot of fun, had to catch up the oxygen deficit. Great training for the coursing meet next Saturday. Will go back there Wed I think, 3.30–4.30PM roughly, be more dogs there then and Socks needs to run to prep for the meet Saturday. Might go to the Good Guys prior and buy a chest freezer—buy a big one of those for less than a smaller upright freezer! Quite the round trip—like $40 petrol minimum—so need to pack in the benefits. Will also visit BBQs Galore, organise a bigger smoker than the tiny one I have now. Two shopping events justifying the dog park excursion.

Yeah, just uphill a bit, past Tamar St (I think that is the cross street, has Albert Hall on the corner with Cimitiere St.)

There are a couple meets in Brighton—I might make a trip out of it—visit Spice House Friday, Salamanca Market Saturday, nice meal somewhere, breakfast Sunday then the meet.

LOT of driving so lots of $$$ to get to Hobart—get my money’s worth.

Looking at lots smoking YouTubes right now, can see need to stock up on some spices—mustard seed, juniper berries, cloves, coriander, pepper!

Normally the blanket & rug are shrugged off by morning. Today I needed an early morning pee and Socks had wandered off to look for any food and to have a drink so I tucked her back in a couple of hours before rising for the day.

First lure coursing fun run today.

Comments on Socks “Grown a bit” and “more mature” etc. Maybe a more honest comment: bringing Socks to the meet to discuss the club, new structure of the fun run days etc and “Socks is a lurcher and very vocal!” Yup, LOTS of dogs around and she knows she will be able to run!

Her first run—average.

Second run—wow! Very clever anticipation where the lure would shoot to next, very fast running and she grabbed hold of the lure before it even stopped at the end of the course! Very nice indeed.

Another dog owner looked at Socks and said she was in great condition, can see the ribs when Socks holds her body the right way. I told her, yeah, she was putting on some weight so I put her on a bit of a diet because Socks lives for running and can’t run as far/fast if overweight.

Weather was nice, sunny, not much wind 18–20°C.

A fun run to be held near Hobart next month. Reckon I will drive to Hobart Fri morning, get to Hobart, visit the Spice House—could go crazy in there spending $$$ but will try and restrain myself. Sat visit Salamanca Market, something I have been wanting to do for ages. Lunch/dinner, to the pet-friendly accommodation and to the fun run in the morning.

Poor Socks will have to be in the car by herself for quite a while. Temperatures will be fine for that, likely to be 12–15°C max temps but still a long time. I will of course look up dog parks near where we will be and we can do a loooong walk along the river

An alternative is to book her in the boarding kennel for a week while I do a bit of a road trip to/around Hobart—this would be pretty cruel to Socks who has this massive separation anxiety. Have to work things out—can always split the visit to Salamanca market over two weeks—two fun runs near Hobart next month.

Separation anxiety.

You have never heard a dog make a noise until you have heard Socks wail because I have left her at home! LOUD like
LOUD!

I needed to change my rego from SA to Tas and have a road safety test done. Socks would just be in the way—can’t leave her in the car to attend the Tas rego office because the car had to be dropped off at the garage for the road safety testing. Massive screams as I drove off.

On the ferry Geelong–Devonport I HAD to leave Socks in one of the kennels—massive whine as I headed for the accommodation decks.

There is a liar who posts here tho currently must be on a holiday. That scumbag talked of “rescuing” i.e. STEALING Socks. Obviously “Lisa Jones” was wildly jealous that I had adopted what turned into a beautiful, sweet natured dog.

If the liar HAD managed to steal Socks the screaming and whining Socks would have uttered would have seen the liar “Lisa Jones” eject Socks from his car right on the highway no doubt.

The very stupid Goober tried to pretend recently that I had been unfair to Socks by not taking up “Lisa Jones’” offer to take Socks to Sydney.” Christ! I had to explain to the high school dropout that Larry had not “offered” to take Socks but had threatened to STEAL Socks from me!

Socks is perfectly happy here as are the greyhounds, whippets, terriers etc I see around town and at the fun run days.

People as stupid as Goober or even more stupid (e.g. “Jasin” aka Jaye) are driving intelligent members from OzPol.

Bam has left, CarlD hasn’t visited or posted for two weeks and DNA doesn’t post much anymore. If he goes who with any intelligence and knowledge will be left? Not many.

Took Socks to the dog park in the local big(ish) smoke.

Some people and dogs I had met before, including a sedate Great Dane 5 years old and already middle aged not more than 3 years before she will pass away, poor thing. A German shepherd, not aggressive but obviously wanting to try and dominate Socks—a truce seems to have been agreed to by the two dogs. Socks seemed to have lost her fear or realised she could always outrun the Shepherd and they seemed to adjust to each other.

These are well socialised dogs—there was never any growling or snarling, Socks initially wary of the bigger dog just dropped the wariness.

Two Irish Terriers were regulars at the park that hadn’t been there my last two visits there. They were all barking and aggression when Socks was on the other side of this fence, quiet once Socks was on the same side. Dogs!

It was a regular love fest for Socks, many comments on how beautiful she is. Love hearing that  Grin

Park is a bit far away. When I go to that park I always have business, food shopping and the like, to do as well as take Socks to the dog park. Just means I go there later in the day. Means it is pretty dark by the time I arrive home—darker as winter gets closer. Hopefully the group—anxiously asking if I was bringing Socks back there, will visit the park earlier. They don’t want to be there in the dark so should be OK.

Socks did plenty of running and walking—we did laps of the park most of the time. Be in good shape for the next lure coursing fun run.

Finally Socks seems to be asserting herself.

Friday afternoon at the dog park, all people and dogs we had not met before. One of the dogs was a German Shepherd/Golden Retriever cross—big dog, long white straight fur.

We all meeted and greeted etc, all was well.

Another guy and his two dogs, kelpie crosses, and some balls and frisbees for playing Fetch! One of the balls was plastic, any whistle it may have had long gone. Now, Socks LOVES plastic balls, loves to chew them, “play soccer” with them etc. So she was happily chewing etc the plastic ball. The big white dog wanted a turn.

So the dog approached Socks to try and take ownership of the ball. Ha! I heard what I had never heard from Socks before: a growl! FINALLY my dog was standing up for herself, asserting herself! Typically it was “resource guarding” that did it. Not a vicious growl or long or loud. Just Socks saying “Mine!” and the big Shepherd cross backed off! As I said before, well socialised dogs.

Possibly Socks got more confidence after her last interaction with the German Shepherd that is one of her playmates there.

Eventually got hold of the ball and returned it to the guy. After that Socks played with the other dogs a bit. She doesn’t really do “Fetch” but did sort of chase after tennis balls and frisbees. LOL! I bent down to pick up a frisbee to throw it. Suddenly Pounce! Slide! Socks who had been like 20 metres or more away got to the frisbee before I did and the frisbee was right at my feet! LOL!

Be back to that town Monday to get food supplies for the week and to give Socks a nice run hopefully with some playmates.

Yes, Socks ate three firelighters yesterday. These were a kind I had not come across before. The usual kind is white, smooth and smells disgusting, this kind was brown and came in squares, a bit like chocolate bars. The smell was different, not as strong or disgusting.

I used some to get a fire going in the Saxon woodburner, leaving some out of the packet. Socks must have thought they were food! (Dogs are always if not hungry more than willing to eat.)

First I knew there was a brown lump on the edge of her bed and I thought she had broken a cardinal rule about not pooping in the house. A second look showed me what had happened.

I assume she bolted them, as dogs do bolt their food, but soon regretted and reversed her act. Was a bit anxious—was there another firelighter square in her tummy? Had her tummy digested any of the constituents.

Socks was not really happy last night but is back to her normal sweet self today. Phew!

Obviously I will not buy that kind of firelighter again!

Well, woke up this morning “Wha. . .?” Socks was on my bed.

She has not done this for a while. When the tradies came to knock down the chimneys and replace cornices etc one bedroom became my bed/lounge/study/dining room and the change meant Socks was on my bed every morning and then she adjusted and was in her own bed all night for several nights in a row until this morning.

Oh well.

Socks even now hops on my bed every night. Suspect it is a dominance thing—height is dominance to a dog and is why dogs should not be allowed on the furniture.

Off to town today, going to buy the bitch a new, bigger bed. Then will ensure she stays there the night.

Had made a new batch of pasta-cheese-eggs-veges last night, half a bag left over so that was her breakfast. Should have seen her hoe into that  Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Saturday a day of lure coursing—christ but she can run!

Socks would be trying to take advantage of your body warmth.

My parents have two large grown dogs that act like complete babies. Mum and Dad spoil both of them. During the winter months, they like to hide in the bedroom as much as they can. When they get their jackets put on them, they know that they are going to go outside in the cold, but onto their warm sheltered beds. You should see how reluctant they get to get out of the bedroom and even go to the lounge. When I leave from my visit, they know that it is their time to be outside for the night. Mum and Dad only keep the dogs inside on a Sunday night because they know that the female dog might injure herself chasing the garbage truck(s).

Our dog we had from my childhood would get put out in the cold, and he did not have a ready made bed to sleep upon. He would be let in the house in the morning, and he would spend the day sleeping. I guess he did not sleep much in the night. My sister moved into the downstairs room. She had a heater to use during the winter. Our dog would beg for her to let him sleep in the room to keep warm.

Socks loves ya. But, I bet she wants to keep warm more.

The Mac Mini was working whilst it was upside down on the floor. Then it was relocated to it's proper position and orientation.

With the age of my mattress, and the springs poking through, Socks can have my mattress when I get it replaced with a new or second hand mattress.

I had to rotate the mattress 180° so that the spring that was poking my back would shift to the bottom of the bed near my feet. So far, my feet have avoided the scratching that my back suffered.

I turned my mattress over once a year—the shape of my body in the position I usually sleep in would be imprinted on the mattress. Can’t do that with the present mattress but can rotate it I guess. Is very comfortable!

I turned my mattress over some months back. But then I found that the mattress had the springs sticking through them. I persisted with it for a while. But, I gave up and turned the mattress back over. Mum and Dad are going to assist with me getting a new mattress from one of the furniture stores. They have a trailer to transport the new mattress.

Rocked up to the lure coursing event—Socks already sitting up and taking notice—likely heard/smelled the dogs already there.

Parked, left dog in car, registered. Back to car, take harness off, put lead on, go to walk the mutt to warm her up for the first run. Jesus Christ, the barking, whining, pulling on the lead, jumping etc. Offered her as second hand dog to a couple of other members there “She is as quiet as a brass band!” but no takers.

So walk her away from most of the other dogs then head to where we wait until our dog’s turn. Finally—our turn, in to the field, take the mutt to where we were indicated. “Ready” then the bags (the lure) started moving and the course controller shouted “Tallyho!” and I let the dog go.

Jaws were hitting the ground. Socks did a SPECTACULAR run, the controller of the machinery had to keep those bags (3 shopping bags make up the lure) moving really fast.

Clever anticipation—her first run, remember—saw her nearly grab the bags at the back of the course.

She was excited at the end, ripped in to the bags, destroyed all three.

Superlatives were hurled at me and I was informed she was nominated for “Run of the Day!” Also was told she was maturing and was in magnificient condition and trim.

Worth driving 270Km round trip for.  Grin

Looks like there will be video of Socks’ run last Saturday—will post it on my fine forum of course, not here with thieves and doxxers and blackmailers!

Be worth seeing!

Well, drove past Perth, Perth Tas that is. Then things became a bit Old Testamenty: drove past Jericho, through Bagdad and over the River Jordan.

Usual nonsense from Socks: was like a thousand premenstrual termagants were at the other end of the lead, not one middle sized dog.

Finally, time for her first run. Socks exploded out of the starting blocks (no actual starting blocks are used) in pursuit of the lure. Now, how the hell can Socks know where the lure was going to move to next, but she anticipated well and nearly grabbed the lure—in the first third or so of the course! Clever!

After retrieving the mutt the guy running the club said she was in perfect condition and explained what he meant:

1. Three vertebrae could be seen (not the actual vertebrae of course)

2. Three ribs, and even a fourth more faintly, could be seen

3. The pinbones on her hips were just visible.

Not fat, not too skinny and undernourished. Seems veges are good for dogs, contrary to what the Village Idiot™ seems to think.

Socks lives only to run. That is why we did a 350Km round trip today.

Well, wasn’t thinking about whisky this morning and in fact never really think about whiskey at all.

I think I didn’t quite go past it because I hung a right at the roundabout and didn’t go into the town.

You did mention that you lived 200 metres above sea level. That can be used against you. Any fingking person could probably narrow it down to some township near the east coast.

Half the island is above 200 metres above sea level. But I would say that you live at an altitude of closer to 200 metres than, say, 500 metres.

The point is that you used 200 metres as a baseline for the criteria of where you live. The response "Never mentioned 500 metres" seems to indicate that you don't live in a region above 500 metres. So, that kind of eliminates anywhere higher than that elevation. For all I know, you could have lived anywhere from 200 metres to 1617 metres above sea level. But, given that you live on the eastern side of the island, the Ben Lomond mountain range would be a closer estimate of the mountain sheltering you.

I have stated the town I reside. But, I live more than 15 metres above sea level. Half the town's residents lives below 15 metres above sea level. So, I have narrowed down where I live, even if it is only marginally.

Bobby already knows your dog's name. Hopefully, he does not have your mother's maiden name. And I won't press this issue any further, out of respect to your privacy.

Monk's an old man living on his own  and in the past has had idiots on here and fd's other forum make threats against him. No need for Monk to narrow down where he lives.  He's already said to much if you ask me. To many nutters on here.

Bobby was goading Monk into giving out his township, using that Antarctica heckle. From what little I know, Monk has been getting schitt from other forum members about some things. I cannot take sides in this as I don't know the story. But, I understand that Monk wants to keep his location a secret.

I, on the other hand, could probably be tracked down to my street, with what I have said online here. Facebook people know where I live. And I have been getting threats against me up until the year 2015. There are only 2 people (at least) that know my real name. And even if people did find out my real name, it would not matter.

No, that was Larry aka “Lisa Jones” threatened to do that. I doubt the druggy has the money for the fare to Tassie or a driving licence. He called it “rescuing” Socks but stealing is what it would have been.

The results of the run yesterday show that Socks is fine here.

Both my parents' dogs have their own beds that we bring in to the loungeroom. But, their male dog has taken to jumping up onto the loungechair and curling up to sleep. He is a big dog, and does not look too different to Socks. So, I wondered for a moment why Mum and Dad don't tell him to get off the lounge. Obviously, Mum and Dad have mellowed in their years, and their dogs are their furkids. Spoiled animals the both of them. It all started with the spoiling of the rescued kitten years ago. Now it has moved to spoiling their dogs.

To a dog height is dominance. That is why dogs should not be allowed on the furniture.

Yes. And especially never on your bed. Apart from being unhygienic,  that's where the aplha sleeps

Yeah. I think the bitch thought I was asleep earlier (obviously not asleep) because I heard her moving a lot as if getting ready to jump onto my bed.

I did allow it for a while as renovations destroyed her routine but no more.

I looked it up on Google Maps. I drove past Shene Rd. I also saw that the roadside stand is “permanently closed” and I don’t wonder at that—you have to go up Shene Rd to get to it, the distillery is not far up the road from there, bit pointless.

Getting back to the fun run.

Seems numbers at the last two events were a bit down. I have drawn numbers like ‘23’ a few times, meaning 22 dogs running ahead of Socks yet Westbury we were #10 and last Saturday, having gotten there after 9.30am, we were #8. Not sure why.

I think Socks has sort of become favorite dog there, not for her noise and carry on but for speed, concentration, determination and anticipation I think Socks is way in the lead.

Cats have the same psychology. My car gets muddy cat paw prints on the windscreen because the cat next door is scoping the garage for rats. It is also a way for him to show dominance. I can open the garage door and see the cat on the roof of my car. He will sit there watching me for a while, until I motion to get into the car. Then he goes. But, if I go under the house and the cat is roaming the cupboards, he will spot me and then run off. Sometimes I have caught the cat on security footage running off before I know he is there.

I looked it up on Google Maps. I drove past Shene Rd. I also saw that the roadside stand is “permanently closed” and I don’t wonder at that—you have to go up Shene Rd to get to it, the distillery is not far up the road from there, bit pointless.

It is now 'permanently closed' as it has been purchased by a large spirit brewing company not in the least bit interested in allowing tours of the place.

Took Socks for her pee walk at 8.00am—an hour later than usual, Socks had jumped onto my bed and was comfy and warm under the thick woollen tablecloth that is the top layer of bedclothes which includes 2 doonas and a blanket and flanelette sheets top and bottom.

Anyway the walk—just a few paces. It was about -3°C at the time. Must say, my “tropical dog” (according to TVI™)) did not show a sign of cold, no shivering etc. She quickly squatted and pissed but that was because it was an hour later so need must have been pressing.

You can dress up for cold, can’t “dress down” for heat beyond a certain limit.

Fun run today.

Not fun getting there {details in Critters and Gardens in my fine forum, not here with putrid poofs doxxing and stealing and blackmailing} worried about black ice.

A car I had been following at 200 metres distance pulled over then pulled in behind me—they wanted me to find the black ice???

Approaching Campbell Town on the Midlands Hway car thermometer showed -2°C and shortly after going through Campbell Town it dropped to -3°C. Never saw any black ice but had left my drive to the latest without getting to the meet overly late.

Bitch was noisy, jumping, pulling on the lead etc as usual.

Her performance on the run was brilliant, clever anticipation where the lure would go to next, lovely sharp cornering into the last straight—lots of whippets went very wide there.

Took some video of her second run, not the most successful but OK—on my fine forum only, sorry.

Scored a nice jacket with the club logo on it.

Still quite low numbers attending which is a pity.

Watching beginner dogs is always entertaining. Some must have low prey drive and hard to get them to chase the lure, others do well then realise they are away from their owners and run back to them halfway through the run.

Socks love to run, she LIVES to run and I am happy to give her chances to run really fucking fast.

Meet was in Ross, a nice town with many fine stone buildings: houses, council chamber, two churches etc. Also has a REALLY good bakery which was closed, and another bakery which is not too bad. Since we had both missed out on breakfast I bought a sausage roll for the bitch and a pepper pie for myself—bitch got about a third of my pepper pie, not really outstanding exemplar of that gastronomic art.

Passed Perth (Tas) both ways  Grin Grin Grin

Socks makes me laugh—a good thing.

After her dinner she settles down, then she whines a bit, a signal to me. I go to Socks, indicate for her to leave the bed and take her “blankets” and get Socks to hop back into her bed, then cover her with the “blankets” the top layer of which is a small floor rug.

So you might think she is feeling the cold. Not a bit of it. I think it is maybe wanting security, a den? By the time I am thinking of hitting the sack Socks is usually half out of her blankets, head resting on the floor!

By morning—completely out of her blankets and showing no sign of cold tho the heater has been on low all night.

Yeah DOGS!

Had forgotten to take two bags of food out of the freezer first thing in the morning, so put one bag in a bowl of hot water to thaw out, put that in her food bowl. Madam turned her nose up at it—a bit wet I guess. OK, so got the pet mince and put that in another bowl, Madam ate that then went to the original food bowl and ate that food too!

A mock trial soon: a 600 metre long course! That will show what Socks can do! By contrast the previous “fun run” was over a disappointingly short course.

This is lure coursing—dogs chase an artificial lure. Hopefully photos and/or video will be available.

Socks sure can run really bloody fast!

Damn! Cold today—tho Socks showed no sign of cold. Was going to take her to a beach and let her run to her heart’s content. Not if it is so cold!

Warmed up since I wrote the above!

I have 600g of chicken thighs defrosted in the fridge. Will cook them on returning home, eat half, take the other half tomorrow (in the car fridge tho temps are fridge temps anyway Smiley

Have I stated that Socks was a clever dog?

Not clever—genius!

Her turn at the mock trial “Tallyho!” and she shot away at the speed of light (OK, slight exaggeration) then she seemed to just stand there and I was puzzled and worried. Need not have worried, Madam had worked out where the lure was going to go!

Nearly got the bloody lure on a fast long straight stretch! People with me were flabbergasted! Never seen anything like it.

After finishing her run on Saturday the bitch was panting pretty deeply—for a couple minutes. Socks was born to run!

To the dog park after shopping. Couple irish terriers there, we know them of old. Went into the other, bigger, more varied part of the park, met another old friend. Thinking “time to go home?”

Another dog entered, a crotchety old male Staffy—doesn’t like Socks’ lightning speed.

Let Socks back into the smaller part of the dog park—three new dogs in there incl an aggressive bulldog and an American Staffy puppy. Was surprised Socks didn’t use her HUGE speed advantage to get away from the bulldog, dunno why???

So back into the bigger part of the park, again thinking of going home when a German Shepherd was added to the pack in the park. Yup, soon verified the Shepherd was a well socialised, companionable animal that Socks had met before—a little bit of hesitation by Socks—the Shepherd is a BIG dog but a bit of sniffing and the two dogs remembered meeting each other before and were happy together.

Socks must have run 15Km in the 90 minutes at the park. Some of the other dog owners there asked how Socks had done in the mock Trial and I told them how uncannily she had worked out where the lure would travel and almost grabbed it on a high speed straight!

I must have walked 5Km! All pleasant tho.

A new owner of three dogs was in the smaller part of the Park. I want Socks to have company of her kind so joined the owner and her 3 dogs. The bulldog was a bit aggressive, lunging at Socks, jumping up at me, wanting to bite Socks.

Surprisingly, Socks did not run away—would have left the solid, shorter legged bulldog in the dust.

Eventually I got Socks back into the bigger part of the park. THEN the silly bitch showed the bulldog her turn of speed and the young woman who owned the bulldog and the American Staffordshire puppy and one other, older dog was in awe at Socks’ turn of speed.

Man, I am SO glad I adopted Socks back in Feb 2022. The (relatively) ugly duckling turned into the most spectacularly beautiful, graceful, clever and sweet tempered dog.

Now if I could just teach her not to jump at me and other people!

It is amazing Socks is so sweet tempered—a previous family she was with must have treated her very badly—she did knock over that toddler on the local recreation ground and acted like she was going to bite it.

Together with her sensitivity to me touching her tail suggests a toddler at a previous home pulled her tail unmercifully and when Socks protested one time she must have been beaten very severely.

When you adopt a puppy from the pound you inherit the unknown history of that puppy—puppies badly treated in one home are likely to stray. Give the dog kindness, consistent rules and it will forget former mistreatment.

Not walking a dog is mistreating the dog!

Of to the local medium smoke Grin for some food shopping then on to the dog park. Oh boy, LOTS of fun today!

Moved into the park, only the Irish terriers, not that interesting. So go into the next bit where someone I hadn’t seen before was exercising her dog. Bit bigger than Socks, quite solid and, alas!, rather overweight. Usual bum sniffing, circling etc. Then a tug of war toy was found—Socks and the other dog having a great time, pulling on the toy, growling continuously but amicably you know?

Told the owner about my joke of Socks being disabled—can’t walk, only run and we had a nice laugh. OK some of Socks’s friends were in the other part so we took our leave letting the other owner and dog go home.

Blow me down, Socks had another tug of war with another dog! A few dogs there, most, sadly, rather overweight incl another new dog, a very fat chocolate labrador.

Socks is, literally, SNORING in her bed, will have a good sleep tonight I reckon!

Doubt it would be someone outside and that would more likely provoke growling.

Some insecurity most likely.

Shouldn’t happen tonight and if it does I will put her back in her bed and cover her with the “blankets” which should give her the security if that is what she craves.

That photo is my last dog before Socks—she died like 4 years before Mum so I could not get a new puppy until after Mum died.

Demi was a Jack Russell/Maltese terrier cross. 8.5Kg of character.

Jack Russell—Demi was all terrier, all predator in the backyard, sniffing to find rats or lizards or whatever, driving the critter from cover then biting it behind its head to kill it. Three rats and one big lizard was the bag we saw.

Demi was all lapdog at night in the lounge. Even when stretched luxuriously in front of the gas fire she would never omit to come to us wanting petting etc.

On my penultimate trip to George Town the people in the holiday house across the street from me had a Maltese Terrier, a male but not obvious with all the fur. So similar to Demi tho bigger. I had a real shock seeing that dog, like Demi reincarnated.

Demi was ALL TERRIER even tho the Maltese terrier is classed in the lapdog group: she loved fetching the ball and would climb a tree if the ball landed up in the branches. The sight of a 8.5Kg dog 2m above ground on a narrow branch and looking unhappy but determined was something else! Terriers don’t back down and will move heaven and earth to achieve whatever they set their hearts on. Headstrong.

I have another photo of Demi. She is sitting just off the track along the Torrens River while I explored the historic Hindmarsh Cemetery (a bit further along is the West End Brewery, the end point of our walk.)

You can see her eyes are blazing “Let’s go!” but there she sits, rock solid. Adelaide’s busiest road, South Rd, is ten metres behind her. That is what obedience training does. I would not dare think about doing that with Socks at present tho she stays when I tell her—in the house or fenced dog park!

Another photo I have, somewhere, is Demi sitting with cyclists whizzing past her at speed while I take some photos of the King William Rd bridge in the City of Adelaide.

In obedience trials I knew Demi was rock solid in the stays, 1 minute sit-stay and 3 minute drop-stay. Knew that but still had to tell myself to breathe while standing 20m away from the bitch waiting for the order “return to your dogs.” (even then the suspense is still there: the dog has to remain sitting/dropped while you walk to it, turn behind the dog then move up—if the dog gets up in greeting that fails the stays—and the trial! No movement until the judge intones “exercise complete.”

Demi's doppelganger, "Ruby" died tragically 34 years ago. Having witnessed the dog die in front of me, just seeing that photo you post triggers replays of the event. That was only superseded by witnessing an even more tragic circumstance.

It is a good thing that I received army instruction training, back before I was an adult.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF MY DOG NOW!

Only runner up Lure Coursing Hound Coursing Ability dog! Number 2 dog in the state!

Pretty good for a dog from the pound, eh?

Today, second run, the lure was pulled faster than I have ever seen it pulled before! At the end Socks needed like 10m to slow down and stop!  BIG applause for her!

So proud of the bitch!

Only sight coursing hounds can really win. They course—chase or hunt—by sight not scent. Their build—long legs with a deep chest with a big heart inside—also helps keep the lure in sight and to run very fast. Few as fast as Socks tho!

Any dog with a reasonable amount of prey drive can take part in a fun run. Terriers have plenty of prey drive but not the speed of sight coursing hounds.

Not all hounds, not even all whippets have enough prey drive. Neither do most puppies. Funny to see a young dog go chase the lure then suddenly realise it has run say 50m from its owner and runs back, not liking being alone out there  Grin

But most dogs will chase the lure and have fun doing so, running and barking as loud as they want, really good to see. Herding dogs DO have a tendency to try and round up the lure but some do well.

I don’t think a chihuahua would chase the lure but one meeting somebody had a chi with them and it got loose. Took half an hour to corral it again  Grin Grin

There are health aspects—for the dogs—to take into account. Overweight or injured dogs won’t be allowed to take part. We need to stretch our mutt’s muscles: straddle the dog and turn its head to right and then left to stretch the muscles in its necks then all four legs are stretched forwards then to the back. Socks HATES all this and resists.

Then we walk to warm the dogs up just before their run and give them a shorter, slower walk to cool the dog back down. After a run the dog can drink a bit of water, later can take a bigger drink. No food in the dog’s belly—food in the belly when running fast for a few hundred metres can cause torsion bloat. No food for like half an hour after the dog’s last run.

But today, that second run by Socks—
SPECTACULAR!

Heh, Socks sure has changed. In 2022, on the way back from Tassie to Adelaide I stopped in Nhill for a break in driving. Walked the mutt on the big grassed median strip and both had a toilet break.

We then crossed the right hand part of the road to where there was a bakery. I tied Socks up and went into the bakery.

Well, the bitch screamed the place down while I waited to be served, pie and a drink for me, cold sausage roll for Socks. Screaming like someone possessed.

Then we come to today. Socks is relaxed on her bed. “Staying here or coming with me?” I asked. Well, seems the bitch couldn’t be stuffed getting up so I drove to the supermarket 20 minutes away. Came back, bitch was still in the same position!

Guess she is used to being left alone for extended (over 5 mins) periods. That took some work by me but I am just glad that it worked.

Visit to the vet today, annual checkup.

Vet LOVED Socks! Her nature, her perfect condition, the opposite of obese and her friendliness/sweet character.

One thing a bit unusual: she needed only one vaccine. I thought the vet was examining her nose but NO! He squirted the vaccine up her nose!

I said she does occasionally cough softly—of no concern.

Visit cost only $88. I was expecting $200.

Ha, she did well.

Friends nearby invited me to have Christmass lunch with them. Fine by me. I made the chocolate cake with star anise and the coffee cream that goes with it. Now, they have a German Shepherd male and I was urged to bring Socks. OK.

So wondered around, soft esky with cake, cream and bottle of nice Tassie Sauvignon blanc and Socks on her lead.

Max the German Shepherd, I noticed, tried some dominance moves with Socks—his bulk helping I suppose, and putting a foreleg on Socks’ back. Also noticed this didn’t last long! Socks ended up chewing the toy he got as a chrissy present and even growled a bit at one stage—feisty bitch, eh?

The meal was fine, rather 1970s with prawn cocktail then the main but nothing wrong with it. I did explain I don’t eat pumpkin LOL.

Then we had my cake—the remainder, it was stated definitely, would be kept there! Hey, sincere compliment on my baking skills!

Had to go to a town a fair distance away to do a bit of banking business. Bought a couple things while I was there.

Went to this park where there is a stream and Socks could be let off lead. Well, ran to the stream, soon boldly running to the other bank near where some ducks were swimming. Ducks vacated hurriedly!

Took her walking, easy to encourage the bitch to run. Big enough and clear of obstacles she really ran, likely not top gear but not first gear either.

Wow, miracle of miracles:  Socks came to me twice when called and let me put the lead on. Have to be back there in 2 weeks, will definitely take her back there—she LOVES running in water, loves running.

Dunno if she was motivated by the cold sausage roll I showed but did not give her? Good positive reinforcement—I tossed the sausage roll to her as soon as she was in the car. Do that in 2 weeks too.

Took some video, not going to post it here, sorry, but Booby is a fucking thief and I have no idea what he wants with photos/videos of Socks. Something sick no doubt.

AHAHAHAHA! fun and games in the dog park this afternoon!

There was a kelpy/labrador cross mutt in the park when me and Socks entered the dog park.

LOL, this mutt tried to be bossy to Socks, Poor fool, ahahaha!

Of course, tactic #1: Socks ran, easily outpacing the mutt. Socks against any dog other than a race trained greyhound? No contest!

That was phase 1. Phase 2, Socks went on the offensive, ohhh ahahahahaha!
At first, pretending to run away, she turned and
POW!
the mutt was rolling at speed over the ground. A few more demonstrations and the mutt made sure to not be near Socks lolololololol!

Poor mutt! Socks had learned the game of bumping a dog onto its back against an American bulldog back in Adelaide. It is VERY hard to bump an American (or even English) bulldog onto its back. (“White Fang” by Jack London covers a fight between White Fang, a wolf/dog cross, against a bulldog—the bulldog nearly choked White Fang to death.) Socks did manage it a few times tho she was usually the one hitting the ground with a thump  Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

So the smaller dog this afternoon had no chance. It ended up rolling along the ground a few times. LOL!

I did call off Socks and clipped the lead on her—don’t want antagonism to get too intense.

But it was funny tho: the attacker turned into a victim.

Neither dog hurt the other, this was just dogs establishing their position in the hierarchy vis a vis each other. I called Socks off to stop things getting too intense just like I get Socks and take her to another paddock when another dog is just too bloody intense in interacting with Socks. This time Socks was the dog getting too intense.

But, oh god, Socks was just SOOO GOOOD in bumping the mutt and sending it rolling over the ground. LOL!

Nice!

New program for the Lure Coursing Club for 2025 just published. Starts next month. Might even enter trials this year.

Just wonder how she will behave. The superfast last run of 2024 saw her just chasing the lure—so intensely that she didn’t slow down like the dogs all do near the end of the course (which is also the start of the course) and had to do a very fast deceleration. The first run that day, run at normal speed she showed clever anticipation as to where the lure would go: that behavior might cost her points in a trial. Have a few months to see how she does.

Hope they run a superfast run or two for Socks. Shit she can

Sausage rolls are not good for a dog, just carry a bag of carrots in your car, much better snack.

Nah, a sausage roll maybe 10 times a year won’t do her any harm. She has burned some energy so a bit of meat and fat won’t harm her. She is in good form, very healthy and energetic.

Was going to go to the dog park yesterday (couldn’t on Monday—a public holiday here so the food shops closed) but was too slow getting ready so had to tell Socks—no dog park today. Today—crap weather, tomorrow will be better.

Dogs love routine. This week has broken our routine from day one! Ah well, we had a pretty good walk today.

Have a guest coming early next month to stay a week or two. Better get the house ready for her arrival.

{chuckle} Poor fools  (<==Goon show reference folks!)

Went to the dog park.No one else there. Went to the paddock has some very easy agility obstacles: dog walk, scramble, tables.

Called the dog to me. She walked to me. “Sit!” and she sat. {Amazing!} “Heel!” {nothing, LOL.) Alright, guide the dog past my right side, behind me, then up my left side “Sit!” and Socks sat. Wow—imagining Demi not taking ANY notice of my commands before a year of formal obedience training  Grin )

So, along the course, up, along and down the dog walk (had to train the bitch NOT to jump from the top of the down ramp  Grin Grin Grin Then the “tyre” which here was square “Through” I commanded. “Huh?” came the reply, Socks having already walked past the “tyre.” LOL, call the bitch back and show her what was wanted. A quick hop and it was done.

The table. Looks like a small errrr table. “Up” I commanded, up the bitch went. Amazing! Sit! Stay! and I walked slowly all around the table, Socks not moving. Wonderful! I returned to stand opposite the bitch “Exercise completed!” and she hopped down and did some running, free to do what she wants.

Magic!

She also does the “automatic sit” better and better as well. Lovely!

OK, the “poor fools” bit. Went back to the big paddock and soon enough other owners and dogs arrived. A couple had unbounded optimism they could catch Socks. Poor fools  Grin Grin Grin  Never getting out of first gear Socks just outran the other dogs with hardly any effort at all.

Staghound: can run as fast as a greyhound and can run for longer. Short legged (under a metre in length  Grin Cheesy ) mutts just can NOT catch Socks.

But Socks did plenty of running, good warmup to the Lure Coursing season starting in 3 weeks!

Did a 5Km walk of the mutt today, mostly on dirt roads. Was looking for blackberries, saw some vines but no fruit.

Took a wrong turn—found something nice! Saw movement behind the house where I made the discovery, waved, stayed.

The owner doddered out to the front. I pointed to my discovery and asked if he harvested it. Nope. Told him I would harvest it next summer (fruit there was way overripe) and leave him a couple of bottles of mead.

The fruit? Prickly pear! Don’t pick the “pears” with your bare hand! It is not called prickly pear for nothing!

Not only that, the guy told me where his bits of prickly pear cacti came from—can supplement the local fruit from there if needed. The type of prickly pear is not the prohibited variety which is nice.

Aren’t dogs great?

Two weeks ago this Tuesday I was in Launceston. Visited PetStock (or whatever it is called) and got the mutt to sit on the scale. My eyes almost did that comic thing of popping out the sockets: mutt was 24Kg, not the 26Kg at the time of the vet visit (tho even then I thought she looked too skinny but the vet was happy with her weight so I left it.)

So, I have tried to fatten the bitch up. Not by giving her huge meals—her waist has to stay skinny because of her breed—but increasing the meals somewhat and boosting the protein content.

Tuesday I was back in Launceston for various reasons and, of course, popped the bitch back on the scales: 24.6Kg. So making progress  back to a sensible weight, be 25Kg by the next lure coursing fun run, just 1Kg less than before March.

What caused the drop in weight? Not sure. I gave her a worming tablet according to the schedule. Never saw any sign of worms and I do pick up after my dog so I would have seen it if they were there (“grains of rice” for any dog owner reading this.)

So—dunno. Socks was the same, same sweet personality, same wanting to run etc etc.

Instead of 500g of veges Socks now gets 500g of veges plus pasta and tuna and often an egg besides. Her mince for breakfast is like 50% bigger and she had two eggs besides. I have some cooked pork a bit old in the fridge that Socks will get as a surprise lunch.

OK, tomorrow morning we are off to the first formal obedience training Socks has done for quite a while. Hope it shows she is OK with that, reckon she will be, is getting better and better just doing bits of obedience training while doing our walks.

At the end of the short course, will see if it is worth going on with obedience.

Would put her in agility—all dogs love that, running, jumping, through tunnels and up the scramble etc etc—but I can’t run (not far off needing the titanium hip replaced) and have a lousy sense of direction so someone else would have to take her through the circuit.

Tracking is available in the same club and I will see if she could do that.

I said the above so calmly—intense activity followed!

Printed out the form they wanted me to give tomorrow. I moved the printer, not the printer power cord. Power cord? POWER CORD! Hmmm not here, not there WTF is it? Some time spent panicking ahhhh there it is!

So print out and fill in the form, one item done.

Next bit: vaccination certificate. Ummm, I KNOW I have it, know I put it somewhere safe. Hmmm, not in the filing cabinet <SHIT!> Hmmm OK, calm down, you put it somewhere safe. Ahhh, THERE it is!

OK, what next. “Soft treats” ummm no soft treats, had meant to buy some “Devon sausage” aka fritz elsewhere in Australia but I had been thrown off by thinking the session was on 7 April, not 6 April. Bit of a brainfart. Formed a plan and went to bed after setting alarms.

Another little panic, went to the local servo, filled up with petrol. Looked at the car clock and nearly had a heart attack: 8.30am. WHAT? Decided to still go, typed the address in the TomTom satnav device. ETA 9.10am. Despite knowing about the change from DST it had still thrown me! Bloody car clock does not get a time signal, unlike the TomTom.

Oh the plan? I knew there was a servo on the road I had to take, stopped there and bought two chicken wraps. Opened one, removed the chicken, cut it into small pieces and put them into a plastic bag I had brought with me.

The trip there and back was over 220Km. I was not going to just go to the obedience training and back home, obviously! Went to KMart, wanted two “pantry organisers” aka shelves to fit in the back of a pantry cupboard to make it easier to see stuff in the back. Mummy’s day soon, complicated crap not the simple stuff I wanted. Silently mouthing curses I left. Bunnings the next stop. Not much happiness for me there either. Ah well.

Saturday—Lure Coursing funday! Yes!

Coursing used to be hunting rabbits, foxes, deer etc with dogs. These days coursing is chasing an artificial lure of three shopping bags tied at one metre intervals to a nylon wire pulled around a course created with special pegs. Sharp turns, short and a long straight stretch to show the dogs’ speed.

It is at one of the better locations.

Making a batch of minestrone today to take tomorrow. Maybe some Anzac biscuits too? This location has a half decent kitchen/lunchroom.

I wonder if the course director will notice Socks’ weight loss? He pointed out last year that Socks was in “optimum condition” with three vertebra visible and 3-4 ribs plus the pin bones of her hips just showing under her fur.

Nice weather tomorrow, should be low 20s, excellent for humans and canines.

Drive into the Ross Sports Ground. Bit late, others already there. Wanted to leave mutt in the car while I registered and had a chat etc. No way, Madame stacked on such a turn I thought I better take her.

(Dogs with their brilliant noses and good ears soon figure out where they are and why as soon as you get near a location. Socks was born to run so when she figures out we are at a lure coursing meet—and the excitement level soon reached 100.) Barking, whining, jumping, pulling at the lead AAARGH! She is normally so well behaved, not at a lure coursing event!)

Register, walk the mutt. Walk it some more. Back to the registration to pay—the “magic square” EFTPOS wasn’t working earlier. Walk the mutt some more. Get sick of putting up with her excited, crap behavior, put her in the car.

Attend a talk on design of a course, walk the course. To be honest I don’t really care: Socks loves, lives, to run, she runs fastest at the lure coursing and all I care about is she gets a couple good runs.

First run, is mediocre. Walk slowly to cool her down (after having walked her briskly to warm her up, well, warm her muscles up) just before her run. For many dogs—her run was excellent but for Socks—execrable.

Back in the car, plug the phone into the socket, turn ignition key to power accessories and so charge the iPhone, set up the hotspot and connect the laptop to it, take part in the RatChat in between walking the mutt, having lunch etc.

After lunch (my lunch, mutt gets no solid food until after her last run) walk to warm her up, wait, go into the ring. Take off lead, hold the mutt, the bags start moving and “Tallyho” cried the course director and I let the mutt charge forward. This run was not mediocre  Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Socks charged forward, motor whizzing to keep the lure ahead of her. After one sharp turn I suddenly hear the motor speed up dramatically—Socks nearly got her teeth on it ahahahaha!

Took like five minutes to get the lead on the mutt and the mutt’s mouth off the lure—nothing wrong with her prey drive.

Ahahaha the last few dogs at each session are beginners or dogs being tried to see how they would go. LOL, one dog ended up being chased by the lure instead of vv  Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Another, a Sheltie (Shetland Island Sheep Dog) would chase the lure for a bit then run back to “Mummy.” Never mind, every dog is welcome to have a go, no rush.

Someone had two Scottish Deerhounds there. I saw the shaggy coat some staghounds inherit (Socks has the short greyhound coat.) LOL it was like those hounds were skipping not running and exhibited very little prey drive, surprising in a Sight Coursing Hound, but there you go.

Back to town for obedience training, over 350Km driven just for the mutt.

Arriving at the venue she was a bit of a pain but when she realised “Oh, damn, no running here” she settled down. Even did recall with the mutt off lead—wasn’t worried about that.

Proud of my mutt today.

At the dog park, just Tara the Great Dane and the two Irish Terriers often there. OK, do a few circuits in the big paddock. Then one of the smaller one. Got Socks to do a couple of the agility obstacles, no small task with the German Shepherd that sometimes joins us being there too.

Socks, sometimes very shy with the Shepherd, behaved impeccably as the Shepherd interacted with her. The dog that acted superior to Socks and ended up rolling on the ground as Socks took her revenge—played a little bit of chasy with Socks, neither dog trespassed and it was all low key and happy.

The Shepherd, despite age and arthritis actually tried a bit of running with Socks who was relaxed and OK with it all.

Happy with how Socks coped with it all.

Oh—the German Shepherd, usually shy with me came to me with the obvious intent on getting some petting. I was happy to oblige.

Another group of dogs joined—incl an older Staffordshire Bull Terrier male who often snarled at Socks as she raced past, jealous of her speed and freedom of movement—was happy, no snarling (never any biting) today. Amazing. (The staffy suffers from bad arthritis in his back legs.)

Would have loved to walk another circuit or three—had to leave, don’t like driving in the dark no more.

Wow, just so sweet and happy today—someone put drugs in the dogs’ food?

Leave just in time, get to obedience lesson just on time, phew! (lots tourism, getting stuck behind a caravan or two could seriously delay arrival at whatever destination.)

Involved “sit for examination” with dog on lead: dog sits, I tell it stay and move as far as the lead will let me from the dog, instructor then gives the dog a quick pat.

Socks was brilliant at it! Again, instructor pointed to Socks as to how to do it! This didn’t happen with Demi  Grin Grin Grin The difference between the breeds is more than size etc.

My neighbor with some animated mop as dog struggled. A doddering old fart giving no leadership to the mutt. When telling his dog to stay he raised one finger at it  Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin  I told him “Act like you are a traffic cop, hold out your hand flat, all fingers extended. Doubt that old dodderer will get anywhere. Oh well.

Re the previous post, sight is not a dog’s best sense. The wolf has sharper, better eyes than any breed of dog, even than lure coursing hounds who basically have excellent peripheral vision, not better visual acuity.

Holding up one finger—dog likely doesn’t even see it!

That is why I told the old dodderer: think traffic cop, hold out your whole hand like you are stopping a whole lane of cars!

You must also definitely be the leader! If the human doesn’t lead the dog tries to take over which doesn’t really work. I remember a woman at the first dog training club I took Demi to. I told her to be the leader her dog needed. She didn’t want to lead, wanted a democratic shared leadership more like. Does NOT work!

I came back to that club a year later—a trial or some exhibition. The woman and dog had been promoted to Grade 4 but the dog, lacking clear direction, was hopeless. I was angry thinking of the unjust treatment Demi got. That dog should have been in Grade 1 or 2!

Sunday be busy, obedience then drive about 40 minutes—fun run!

Gosh, Socks LOVES to run!

Churchill told some younger bloke about conservation of energy: why walk when you can stand, why stand when you can sit, why sit when you can lie down? He used all that as an old man running WWII from a cellar in London.

Well, Socks thinks: Why stand when you can walk? Why walk when you can run? Why run when you can ccchhhhhaaaaarrrrrgggggeeeee?

At the fun runs she can ccchhhhhaaaaarrrrrgggggeeeee!!!!!

Bit of wild and woolly weather here just now. Thunder and lightning plus rain.

Lightning seems to be very vertical, like a pillar of light for a split second.

Socks not taking it well, whining a bit, not settling down to sleep.

Funny, 2.5Kg Tiffany—unfazed by t&l, fireworks. Yet 8.5Kg Demi and 26Kg Socks upset and worried by them.

Drove to dog obedience training. Dog did OK.

After that drove to a town, did some shopping, took Socks to the big reserve that is there, let her run to her hearts content for a while. Called her—she actually came. Did five minutes of heeling/sitting/standing/dropping etc—all off lead—and Socks did fine. Let her run, called her again, put her on the lead, another 5 minutes obedience practice, took lead off and let her run a few more minutes then moved to the car and Socks jumped in no probs.

Reason—can control dog a bit more when it is on the lead and teach her that being put on the lead is not always the end of having fun.

One problem: the recall. Socks takes off enthusiastically when called then can’t stop in time so runs past me. Will do more recalls inside with me standing in the front passage where she can’t run past me. She needs to temper her enthusiasm when running on the recall. Will work on it, no probs.

Another huge drive tomorrow—obedience training.

Coles is open in Launceston Sundays—cheaper than the local IGAs so I stock up big on cans of sardines (handy supplement) and tuna (meal replacement) plus frozen veg—her evening meal is mostly veg tho I supplement with a bit of protein, sardines, sometimes. That gets me $15 back reducing the total spent on the trip a bit.

Weigh her at PetStock, have a walk then to the place with the big park then home.

Socks will get no breakfast tomorrow—will get to the dog club early and let Socks run and walk for an hour, try and lessen the amount of “piss and vinegar” before the lesson. Cut up a bit of steak to take—not as a treat when doing the lesson but as a diversion when she gets restless when we stand listening to the instructor rave on. Obedience lessons are a walk spoiled by too much standing to Socks.

Met my new over the back fence neighbor this morning. Nice chap, taken with Socks. Likely won’t stock sheep, good to know for in case Socks manages to run away for a while.

Dog obedience training today.

Got there an hour early, deliberately, to let Socks run and walk and walk on the lead practicing bits of obedience training. Aim—to get the “piss and vinegar” or a lot of it out of Socks (temporarily of course.)

That sort of worked.

Lots of the items of obedience went great! The recall—I call Socks and almost immediately tell her to sit. Socks applies the brakes and sits in front of me. All a bit untidy BUT:

1. She does come to me when I give the recall command

2. She no longer rushes past me and  then having to backtrack.

After years of sitting nice and straight on my left side she sat at right angles to me and did that repeatedly. However, all told she did pretty well today and other students congratulated me on her improved behavior.

Weighed Socks at PetStock: 25.75Kg, bit less again but not drastically so and she had not eaten to that stage: remember I wanted her to run heaps before the lesson and a dog running with food in its guts can get torsion bloat which is pretty much a death sentence for the dog.

Went to this big park after the lesson—want to create a routine where we have exercise before the lesson then, after whatever bits of shopping I do after the lesson, we drive to this big park and she can run, play in the little river (when this settles down after rain) or we walk 5-10Km all along the river. So, she puts up with the spoiled walk which is what the obedience lesson is to her after her early morning running/walking then gets more running and fun after the lesson. See if she gets that message.

Oh yeah. Just checked with the BoM—it was 6.3°C at 9.00am when we arrived at the dog training club grounds. We moved like 100m from where active classes were being held, then I removed the lead from Socks’ collar and zzzoooommmmm!!!!!!!!! off she went.

Remember that temperature. My so-called “tropical dog” ran through every bloody puddle on the tracks we followed. Man, did I laugh myself silly! 6-7°C air temp and my bloody dog ran through every bloody puddle. Tropical dog  Grin Grin Grin

I had posted—and posted more than once—of this 7°C Adelaide morning when Socks and I arrived at the local dog park there. First thing that “Tropical dog” did? Went and lay down in this huge muddy puddle. 7°C—just like today.

Needed to restock my pantry a bit with some ambitious dinners planned so drove 65Km to the local slightly-big smoke. Gave me a chance to let Socks have a short run in the dog park there.

Well BUGGER! The fine food shop was shut for a couple weeks. Damn!

But Socks had a nice if somewhat brief reunion with some of her friends there. I narrated how Socks had grabbed the lure in midflight two fun runs ago then had a lacklustre run the next meet.

Drove to a town two towns away: need some dry vermouth for the vermouth jus I have been rabbitting on about. Nope, no vermouth sweet or dry. Damn! OK, will visit Uncle Dan after obedience training next Sunday.

So will take the small piece of pork belly out the freezer Sunday and Monday make the vermouth jus and pork belly—a dry run for the actual dinner party. If the jus is fine I will freeze it. If not, will freeze it and make another batch.

Anyway, thought the above walking out the bottleshop. Then got Socks out of the car and we had a nice walk of 2-3Kms along a couple of streets.

Saw the beach across the main road. “Hmmmm” I thought “the sand there deposited where a river entered the sea won’t have any big rocks and lots of lawn to get Socks to recall properly.”

And it worked out like that. Was even another dog on the beach, one we had met at the dog park so the beach walk was even better. Crossing the road to get back to the car it started raining—perfect timing!

Socks happy as Larry (not the Larry here, doubt he is ever happy) doing her “dance” because she had walked streets new to her and had a short beach walk off lead.

As well as doing her “dance” Socks has another, a quieter way, of showing me she was happy: she “noses” my left hand (Socks, of course, heels on my left, head level with my side.)

The nosing seems to be a way of communicating that she is happy, that she loves me and appreciates the lovely long walk on new streets, along a new river and finally the beach. Next time I want to walk her I will go back to that new spot and walk Socks along streets on the other side of the river.

Did walk the other side of the river—couldn’t get to the river. So walk some streets new to Socks—she was happy.

Crossed the main road to the beach. Last time—Socks found a rock she tried to pick up and would not come when called. Oh well.

Was after lunch time and I hadn’t eaten lunch. Went to the nearby cafe and ordered some chips and a sandwich to take away. Ate the chips in the car there and they were nice and crispy and not greasy.

Of course, I was soon surrounded by seagulls. Tossed them a chip, expecting a huge squabble but, nope, one gull one chip. Tried a couple more. Nope no squabbles among the gulls but there was noise, oh yeah: Socks on the back seat barking that is
barking!
Sheesh she trying to destroy might right ear as well?

However, while Socks was barking
really loudly
not a single gull dared grab the chip lying on the ground about a metre from the car  Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Obedience trainign today. Leave about 8.00am, get there about 9.30, over an hour to walk the “piss and vinegar” out of the mutt. Was a dog park there I was told last week, found it this week and mutt had a great time.

On to the lesson: disaster!

Dunno—next time will walk the mutt on lead for 60 minutes, do the lesson and then visit the dog park.

Bugger: today was graduation day, we could have moved up a grade. OK my fault too—have not practiced at home. Plenty practice will happen this week!

Went past the bulk butcher, got chicken thigh fillets and spare ribs plus brisket bones and meaty beef bones—these latter two are turning into stock in my kitchen. To make the stock for the pho soup need marrow bones—didn’t buy these, have three bags of marrow bone stock in my upright freezer, add one of those to the stock.

At the pretty good supermarket near the butcher bought salami, prosciutto and—bocconcini! Pizza time! Also nice circular loaf of sourdough bread.

Also visited Uncle Dan and got a bottle of Cinzano dry vermouth for the vermouth juice recipe.

Just turned the heat off under the stock, decant it tomorrow morning. Smells fine.

Ah—weighed the breakfastless mutt, 26.1Kg. Pretty good.

Stock with spices added—ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, star anise and cloves—god it smells nice! Delicious, the spice smell distinct from the beefy stock smell.

Once that is done can start the rhubarb and strawberry preserve. Bought a tiny bottle of red wine at Dan Murphy’s yesterday, fry  the strawberries in some of that, add to the rhubarb, be great! By great I mean: insanely good!

Did a short walk with Socks, just the PO and home via slightly roundabout route—had planned a longer one but the sky looked awfully grey so home we went.

Despite the short walk—Socks knew we were headed home, knows the area well because I have walked her over all of it—yet. . .she did the dance! Bless her!

Anybody else have a dog? Activities? Problems?

Excellent! A fun run this weekend and at Ross not far away unattractive Brighton near Hobart.

Get there early and visit the excellent bakery there on the way in, grab some wholemeal sourdough. (visit it on way out, buy some lunch for the both of us.)

Cross fingers rain doesn’t wash out the event.

Just back from a walk with the mutt.

A delight. Socks walks to heel, no pulling on the lead, fighting as to which direction to go—not like a walk with Demi pre obedience training  Cheesy Grin

To have much of a walk I have to leave the village and walk on more rural roads: specifically roads between fields where there might be sheep in the fields. Socks VERY interested in sheep.

Me—I don’t want to pay for sheep my dog has killed and I would really hate to have to bury Socks after the sheep owner shot her. Some family crap I will not go into means that living quietly in Tasmania with my lovely dog is what I need right now. Socks is not an official assistance dog but to me is a bit more than a normal pet.

But we walked past fields containing sheep without much hassle. There were more fields with horses but horses are big enough to look after themselves and Socks is, I hope, clever enough not to be brained by a horse lashing out with its back legs kicking.

The paddocks have been empty for the last couple of years but we have had dry winters the last two years. This year has not been really wet but seems the rain has been OK so far and sheep are returning to some paddocks.

I did have a chat with someone who keeps sheep. A dog would not be shot unless it was killing sheep or clearly about to kill some. I will make sure Socks does not come near to sheep. This means that if most of the paddocks have sheep the walks will cease and I will try to bring Socks to fenced dog off lead areas and maybe walk Socks along the railway line here.

And, yes, Socks did her “dance of happiness.”  Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Again she indicated she would like the walk to be longer but I didn’t oblige. Walk was long enough and cold enough I wanted to get home. Very polite she is.

I told her “No, sorry, I need to get home” and she gathered that further walking was not on and she didn’t try to lengthen the walk after that. But I guess I need to change the route next time, lengthen the walk—no probs at all.

Geez, just as I thought the weather would be great for tomorrow’s fun run—rained today. Ross has showers forecast, hopefully can get at least one run in. The season is coming to an end, only 6-7 weeks of it left.

Well, as at 0415 the run is still on. If things get run briskly should get two runs in with any luck.

Perfect weather,  sunny but cool. No sign of the promised rain.

Socks—Run of the Day in her first run. Almost grabbed the lure again, lucky she didn’t.

Where the course has a long sharp V the dogs take a few metres to slow and turn around while the lure zips rapidly away. Without a high prey drive the dog would be discouraged. Comment on Socks’ first run “Socks never gives up” and she doesn’t. A VERY high prey drive is part of that I suppose.

Someone came past with two whippets. I patted them a bit—less fur than Socks. Tropical dog  Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Nice day. Not many rocked up so all finished just after 12pm.

Back to the dog park we have missed because spending time there when the regular people/dogs would mean arriving home in the dark: don’t like driving in the dark and it increases the chances of hitting wildlife with my car.

Will return in two weeks.

Socks had fun with a dingo that is brought to the park sometimes (are two or three dingoes sometimes there when I take Socks there.) Someone with two Jack Russell terriers was there. One was OK, one was not. One stage the unhappy terrier must have jumped up at Socks, bounced off her side: Socks totally puzzled. Owner told me that dog had been attacked by a big dog and it reeks revenge!

If things get intense separate the dogs so I called Socks and went to another paddock (dog park is divided into one large, one medium and one small paddock.) There was another regular and his dog there so no problems. Back to the big paddock later, the Great Dane was there and a couple Irish Terriers—and their owners of course.

Also the grumpy Staffordshire Bull Terrier Jones. Not too grumpy today for some reason.

So Socks met and interacted with other dogs, some well known, some new—socialisation makes for happier, better behaved dogs. Dogs kept in back yards no matter how large don’t get socialised and get aggressive: dogs are social critters! WALK your dogs! Take them to the dog park—before or after work especially on the weekends—during the day on weekends dogs that only get limited time in the dog park can be poorly behaved to the point of biting!

When you walk your dogs let them “read the community bulletin boards” dogs create with their urine, nearly as good as meeting and interacting with dogs in the flesh. Demi would always add a drop to the ground in front of the power pole or whatever, Socks never does, weird.

Drove to Launceston for dog obedience training.

She is getting better, much better BUT

Recall test. Leave dog telling her STAY with voice, hand and stepping out with right foot first. Ten paces, turn around, look at dog. On instruction from the instructor call the dog with voice and hand signal. Dog is supposed to trot briskly to the handler then sit just in front of him.

Socks is different: on call, takes off like a canine rocket and races past me, races around the field a minute then comes to me and sits. Hilarity all round.

Apart from that, all pretty good.

Took her to a large field. Let her run etc. Then called her and we did obedience exercises, heeling off lead including right about turns, the terror of trialling with Demi: in a right about turn you turn your back on your dog (dog is on your left, remember.) Socks turned like a champion, no problem. OK, recall: sit the dog, tell it stay, walked ten paces, turned around, waited, got Socks’ attention then told her “Come!” while throwing my arms in the air.*

Blow me down, Socks trotts to me, sits down and I walk down her left side, around her and up her right side. Socks sits unmoving, like a champion!

Did a bit more, let Socks run around as she wanted, recalled her, put the lead on, walked her a bit, took the lead off, we walked around a different area, suddenly Socks sees something black, I thought a bird but it doesn’t fly, both racing, Socks catching up—she really can run you know—when it zooms sideways into reeds on the bank of the little river and Socks stops. If that was a rat glad she didn’t catch it—rat bites are dirty!

Back to the other side of the river and the car. Home.

* Dogs’ sight is not its strongest sense. In trials, especially evening trials we dress to, not impress, be visible! Dark jumper, white shirt, pull the jumper sleeves up, dog sees the white sleeves move in commands like heel, stay, drop etc. Similarly, dark pants, white sneakers. Little things, just trying to load the communication channel from handler to dog. We did it, every bit helps.

LOL!

Next Easter there is a “duck herding trial.”

Now, I would enter Socks but she would see it as a “Duck Eating Trial”  Grin Grin Grin

Bless my loving and lovely dog, she just has the prey drive of ten Jack Russell terriers. LOLOL!

Reminds me of some event in SA years back, I walked Demi down a track, stood and watched a border collie herding three ducks. Someone told me to move on, Demi’s examination of the ducks in the herding event was freaking the ducks out. Oops! I moved on.

Ummm a problem has arisen with the recall: Socks does not do the recall outside of the lessons.

Need treats I think.
