Maybe these are the people we should be arming.... Wink

Small hope after all it was Australian political gutlessness that helped Indonesia to take over the country.

We allowed the Indonesian take over of West New Guinea because we were powerless to stop it. America was more interested in being allowed to passage their SLBM submarines through the straits between the islands to allow them to attack the fUSSR and turn their back on Australia's request for aide.  It was one of the reasons why we became embroiled in South Vietnam.  Australia believed that Indonesia was a "fellow traveler" with the Communists.

Precisely, Australia’s gutlessness.
Just like the later gutlessness when the five Australian journalists were murdered.

Australia had just undergone a massive political upheaval at the time.  We were just recovering from a massive social upheaval at the same time.  Australia's "gutlessness" was beyond it's control and we would more than likely be defeated if we put some boots on the ground,  we were completely unprepared for the Indonesians taking over of East Timor.  The Americans had OK'ed it apparently, with their secretary of state visiting Jakarta the day before it's occurrence.  They wanted to prevent a Marxist takeover of the place, which was likely.  We relearnt a valuable lesson - you must have force to back your diplomacy when you attempt to deal with dictators.

And we still wouldn’t say boo!
We still don’t have the capacity to stop Indonesia from doing whatever they want in west New Guinea, we’re a small country with a big land mass.why do we give aid to Indonesia; kickbacks perhaps?
If we are in fact stronger than we look, why don’t we offer aid to the opposition in West New Guinea?
One word comes to mind . . . Gutlessness.

We are a lot more able then we were in 1960 and 1975.  We have acquired two LHD ships, the HMAS CANBERRA and HMAS ADELAIDE.  In addition we have acquired HMAS CHOULES a Bay-class landing ship.  This enables us to put ashore three battalions of infantry and an armoured squadron.   Something we were incapable of.  Australia has also allied itself with Indonesia.  West New Guinea is considered an integral part of Indonesia.  We are loath to declare war on countries were are allied with.  Indonesia respects Australia.  It owes it's independence to us, when we stopped the loading the munitions for the Dutch forces in 1948.  Only Xenophobes want war.  Tsk, tsk, tsk...   Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

So Australia says stuff the people who helped us against the Japanese and good on the ones that supported the Japs against us.
To hell with the right of the West New Guinea people to independence.
As I said, gutlessness.

A case of REALPOLITIK in action.  You prepared to see us go to war all the time, like a true Xenophobe does, hey?  Tsk, tsk, tsk...   Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Gutlessness.
The Timor people are another example, they stood by us against the Japs and enabled our troops in Timor to fight on and what did it get them?
No support when they needed it against the Indonesian invasion. It was not till the UN finally did something that we got involved.
A record of political gutlessness, and now they may look to China for a bit of backing, and who could blame them?

We did not have the backing of the US, either in 1960 or 1975.  What were we meant to do?  Well?  We had just suffered a massive social upheaval, the population wasn't interested in going into another war, the Government was just about to be dismissed, so what were we meant to do?  Lets see your magic formula to overcome all those problems, hey?  Tsk, tsk, tsk...   Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Do the honourable thing and speak up.
We got stupidly involved in Vietnam, we could have just spoken up for our wartime ally, Ho Chi Minh.
Australia has an unfortunate habit of selling out its little friends and sucking up to its perceived big ones.

Leftists and the Ayatollahs have a lot in common when it comes to criticism of Islam, they don't tolerate it.
