Do you think West Papua will ever get independence and perhaps join PNG?

Doubtful.  It's best chance was in 1960 but because the US pulled out of backing Australia and the Netherlands in their efforts, the idea basically died.  We lacked the military means to force it alone.   Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

It is probably a strategic thing to let Indonesia rule West Papua.

I don't know what is "OPM". And I have implied that outsiders would have wanted Indonesia to rule West Papua.

"OPM" stands for Organisasi Papua Merdeka - Free Papua Movement - they are the major organisation which is resisting the imposition of Indonesian rule over West New Guinea.

The only reason I can see a reason for any sort of military aid to the Indons is to enable them to be a better speed bump against Chinese expansion.  Roll Eyes

Small hope after all it was Australian political gutlessness that helped Indonesia to take over the country.

We allowed the Indonesian take over of West New Guinea because we were powerless to stop it. America was more interested in being allowed to passage their SLBM submarines through the straits between the islands to allow them to attack the fUSSR and turn their back on Australia's request for aide.  It was one of the reasons why we became embroiled in South Vietnam.  Australia believed that Indonesia was a "fellow traveler" with the Communists.

Precisely, Australia’s gutlessness.
Just like the later gutlessness when the five Australian journalists were murdered.
