You get to a point where you cannot drink alcohol anymore. That is when you take a prolonged break from alcohol. You have trouble sleeping. You want to eat more. You have mood swings and heavy cravings for alcohol after a while. And then you start feeling better. Nobody gets to a point where alcohol cannot be ignored in favour of better health.

My grandfather got to a point in his colon cancer that he decided he wanted to have one last beer before he died (a couple weeks later). My uncle drank so much and so often that he developed liver cancer. He gave up alcohol until the day he died (a year later).

I have drunk more alcohol between the years 2020 and 2023 than I have between the years 2000 and 2020. But, I could quit today if I felt so bad that I needed to quit drinking. I bet most of the alcoholism victims would have given up to give themselves some relief before they died.

That's right. Many 'addictions', even Sex - rule to the very end.
In eastern Slavic Europe, alcoholics who were aged or coming to the dying stage from the alcohol itself - often found themselves unable to keep getting their alcohol. This would lead to the 'Ghoul' stage where they would 'groan' excessively in need of the alcohol. Their restlessness and what little brain capacity they had left leaved little ability for them but to wash themselves in their own faeces and eat it in craving need.

I always drank socially, Some times I was social a lot but never felt I needed a drink or could not stop any time I wanted.

I was a club director for a number of years and drinking almost every day. Went from that to stopped drinking in 1995. Most years I have hardly had a drink except between 3 and 6 on XMas day or out with golf / footy friends. Maybe once per year.

Typically when I do drink it is a lot which I know is bad.

One of my problems is that I almost never suffered from a hangover.
