The Push For Two More Public Holidays In Australia

Strengthened call for Australia to have two more public holidays
The push to have more public holidays in Australia has intensified as the country works to move away from Western Christian traditions.

The push for an additional two annual public holidays in Australia has intensified to align the country with its growing reputation as a multicultural society.   Smiley

Current public holidays represent Western Christian traditions despite only a quarter of Australians attending church just once in a year, according to nonpartisan international policy think tank, Lowy Institute.

While popular belief would suggest Australia is abundant with long weekends, multiple countries in the Indo-Pacific including Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia have more public holidays.

In these countries, public holidays mark celebrations like Buddha’s birthday, Diwali, Lunar New Year, Eid and Christmas Day, allowing a variety of communities to honour their traditions.

Should Australia have more public holidays?
Yes - another day off work is always a winner
No - we have enough already!

Australia’s Christmas Island does however have a public holiday for Lunar New Year, and on both Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, one is held for Eid.

There is a renewed push for Australia to have more public holidays.

The institute argues adding more public holidays to Australia’s annual calendar would reframe the country’s reputation as a “Western outpost on the edge of the Indo-Pacific” and would serve as a strong message to the rest of the world.

“In an era where concerns about illiberalism and intolerance across the globe are growing, it would be a powerful symbolic statement from a Western liberal democracy,” the institute said.

Ongoing debate over whether to cancel or change the date of Australia Day serves as a sign that Australians feel strongly about what public holidays say about their country’s identity.

“Rather than fostering division, more public holidays would create a greater sense of unity by encouraging greater societal understanding of different beliefs and practices, normalising cultural pluralism in Australia,” the institute said.

Community support for more public holidays is, unsurprisingly, abundant.

The Scanlon Foundation’s 2022 Mapping Social Cohesion report found seven in 10 people supported learning more about the history and intricacies of different ethnic and cultural groups in the country.

Additional public holidays would send a strong signal to the rest of the world.

More public holidays would play a key role in fostering inclusion by creating a bigger sense of unity, the institute reported.

“They would encourage greater societal understanding of different beliefs and practices, normalising cultural pluralism in Australia,” it wrote.

Data from the 2021 Census unveiled Australia’s population is predominantly made up of either migrants or children of migrants, with about one in five people speaking a language other than English at home.

Meanwhile a quarter of Australians have an overseas non-European cultural background.

As an atheist, I call for the abolition of all/any public holidays based
on or around religions.  In Australia, atheist now outnumber each of
the Catholic and Anglican religions, making us a nominally secular
country in which the state and the church have no connection.

So... gone are Christmas Day and Boxing Day, Easter Monday, the
Saturday before Easter Sunday, Good Friday, and Easter Monday.

Other extraneous holidays... Melbourne Cup Day, the Friday before
the AFL Grand Final, King's Birthday, and Labour Day.

Australia Day should (naturally) be celebrated on 1 January, the date
of Federation in 1901.  This would remain a public holiday shared with
New Year's Day.

The one-off public holiday to mark the death of Queen Elizabeth II cost
Australia's economy approximately $2 billion in lost productivity. And
the new AFL Friday holiday costs the Victorian economy $852 million.

—In a time of economic crisis and a threatening GFC, can we really afford
the luxury of all these days off?  The last Census identified approximately
1.1 million people classified as independent contractors.  Can they afford to
lose 13 days of pay due to public holidays?

You are so addicted to following the path of least resistance
You are so addicted to the taker mentality
You are so cut off from creativity and contribution

That you can't even see you have created a living hell for yourself

We could make every second day of the year a public holiday
We could give you endless amounts of cash

But there isn't enough stuff that you would ever feel complete
The idea of scarcity
The idea that you need more
The idea that getting stuff is the solution to your problems
It's so entrenched in the 6 inches between your ears

That you will always live in scarcity

Practising gratitude meditation would help

"A “Western outpost on the edge of the Indo-Pacific” built on Christian civilisational foundations - precisely the reason why Australia is so attractive to third worlders from the Indo Pacific. Pakistan, Vietnam, Philipines ARE kn the Indi Pacific yet no one is clamouring to get into those vibrant non-Western countries.

'Sending messages to the rest of the world" - this line just reveals the dreadful,  preening cultural cringe of all such articles, suggestions, clamouring.

I think which-ever Company pays the most in sponsoring a Public Holiday.

Toyota Day?
Coca-Cola Day?
Reuters Day?

When it comes down to it - it's the almighty $$$ that has the last say.

WELL - if the keep this up, the employed will soon have to join the Unemployed Union, and dividie's 'job guarantee' of money for not working ('he' always raves about forcing a job on everyone, but never discusses what is to occur when there are no jobs out in - say - the Ning Nang Nong where the Koons smoke bong etc... free money for ringing it to check every morning that there is no job??  That's the ticket!!!) - being as they'll all soon be on the same level of FREEEDOOOOM from toil developed from all that New Technology and the 'more efficient' ways of producing goods etc via the global economy, meaning people without money can just buy and buy via living a national PONZI scheme or running drugs and stuff.... so crime must be flourishing, eh?

Might as well test the waters by steadily reducing the hours of work by all the peasants.... bring that water slowly to the boil so the frogs won't jump out.....

Well... nothing really.

But, I'm guessing aqua needs to make up for being unable to toss his word salads around here while the forum was offline for a day.

I agree.

Especially when the 'true' meaning of these holidays has been lost a long time ago and they're just more reasons for businesses to make more profit with their endless sales.

A perfect example is when we saw hot cross buns in the shops on Boxing Day. And, I've heard that Easter eggs are already in some of the shops as well.  Roll Eyes

People don't have to be practising Christians or church goers .....

to know that Christian based values are still a very relevant and worthy part of our society.

Frank Lowy & the Lowy Institute should be ignored.

As has been stated why is that all those people from these so called vibrant non western cultures& countries all clamour to get here? ....

and no one is busting down the doors to migrate to their countries??
