When I bought a new phone about 4 months ago I decided to go with a Nokia G21 to replace my ageing Samsung S5 which I bought in 2017.

Many people were getting fed up with buying a new Samsung phone and only getting a year of updates (if that), at least I get at least 2 years of updates with the Nokia.

I have heard since that Samsung do provide more than a year of updates for their phones these days but that isn't much good if their updates are going to stuff up peoples' phones.

From Google:

Though Samsung has dabbled with other mobile operating systems, all Samsung Galaxy smartphones use the Android operating system. Simply put: Android is the operating system, Samsung is the manufacturer.

So what is exactly is the update that causes the problem? If it's an android update, it might affect other brands.

I've Googled it -
I can't find any specific details.
We have to assume that any Samsung update is faulty.
I declined 2 Samsung browser updates in the last week -
that might be it?

“Samsung has received reports from customers of an issue when updating their phones,” a spokesperson said.

“At this time these reports are from customers based in South Australia only. We are continuing to investigate this matter.”

My mothers Samsung phone went blank.

Held down the 'power' and 'volume down' buttons at the same time for 7 seconds and it came back to life.  All good.

Thousands of Aussie Samsung users are warning others not to install the most recent update on their phone, claiming it renders the device useless.

Samsung users flocked to Facebook to complain about the issue after installing the update, with some reporting it caused their phone to crash and left them with a blank screen.

“Public service announcement: To all Samsung users, please do not update your phone. The most recent software update may cause your phone to just die,” one person shared on Facebook.

Another user said their phone was completely stuck on the logo screen and they were unable to even turn the device off.

“Well done Samsung on the latest update on mobile phones. My phone started an update, then stalled, then went to recovery screen automatically after trying to load for 30-40 minutes. Tried to recover in safe mode now all it does is say Samsung. Can’t turn off any thing [sic].”

A Samsung spokesperson told 7 News the issue appeared to only be affecting Aussies living in South Australia but that it was working to fix the issue.

“Samsung has received reports from customers of an issue when updating their phones,” the spokesperson said.

“At this time, these reports are from customers based in South Australia only. We are continuing to investigate this matter.”

I updated mine to the latest Android 13 the other day ... seems to be working fine for me.

Did notice that it turned off my auto-restart setting but that turned out to be a good thing - the Chemist Warehouse app was not giving me consistent reminders prior to the latest update and since then has been working much better.  Cool
