He was that rare thing, an honest politician. Could not abide the Nationals any longer so became an independent. Helped Gillard form a minority government, the best government since John Curtin’s back in WWII. THAT started as a minority government—two independents who could no longer stomach the inertia and mismanagement of Robert Menzies’ UAP government.
