Not a fan of this, but it is necessary in the short term.  As long as we pick the nationalities and individuals carefully it should work.

Commonwealth countries first and foremost, followed by allied countries like US, NATO nations, French.  Basically not much is going to change, we have been doing this for over 40 years that I'm aware of, having served with English, Canadian and American soldiers at various times.

The people we took previously were almost always direct transfers from Commonwealth military forces, especially the UK,  and it did cause some annoyance in these countries with accusations of 'poaching' being flung around.  Seems this new scheme is a way to keep doing the same but make it look like we are not.  Wink

Nothing wrong with that.  We have always accepted recruits from Commonweath countries.  Peter Cundall was one such soldier and I've served with at least three others.

I once asked my female staff if sexual harassment was a problem for them. The replies ranged from 'Nothing I can't handle' to 'I've not had sex for quite a while and I could do with some harassment'   Of course these sailors were not new recruits but women in their mid to late 20s who had been in the RAN for around 7 - 10 years, and were very self confident and in a job where dealing with unruly sailors was sometimes necessary.

Different for new recruits who don't have the life experience to deal with incidents of real or perceived harassment.

More faffing around....Go for half a dozen Arleigh Bourke class DDG's, available right now, put more into recruiting and as personnel numbers increase get more of them. Meanwhile buy into the USN DDGX project as an eventual replacement.

It might be cheaper but they would not necessarily be as functional.

What do you reckon?    Just about all Defence Housing I lived in was passable, some not in salubrious suburbs, very restrictive about what you could do in the way of decorating the place, and rank based.    Some lower ranked blokes with 4 kids were only entitled to a two bedder at Coogee whilst CPO No Kids had a 4 bedroom House.    I am not sure if this article is the answer to falling recruitment

I used to paint defence housing. They had pretty high standards and money is no object when they are looking at maintenance. As an investment they are great if you want less stress because you get a ten year lease, they pay for all repairs during that time period and then they replace anything not up to scratch when they hand it back. New carpets, paint inside and out, anything not working properly is replaced for new etc.
Management fees are higher at about 12.5% whereas your typical property managers charges about 7.5%.

Makes a lot of sense. Nothing really new, but revamping the older system to make it more suitable for today's people.  A return to the old DFRDB would also be attractive.
