We used to hear people say it was bad to be gay because it was, somehow, “unnatural.” Homosexuality would, among other things, threaten the survival of the species. Coupling up is for reproduction, right? Wrong. Homosexuality in the animal kingdom abounds. And it shows no signs of encouraging any species to go extinct. That’s why we don’t see any animals punishing one another for enjoying same-sex acts. “In other words,” animal cognition researcher Justin Gregg writes this week, “while same-sex attraction is not unique to humans, homophobia is.” Why? For Gregg, the credit goes to our ability to reason morally.
