Are Americans ready to elect socialists? What new polling revealed:
American politics is undergoing a seismic shift. Voters have ushered in a growing group of politicians who characterize themselves as democratic socialists in recent years, but Americans appear poised to put more in power soon.
Democratic socialists are winning:
A slate of democratic socialist candidates recently rode the wave of their movement in primary elections from New York to Colorado. The movement seems to be gathering a lot of steam with disaffected voters across the country.
Democratic socialism in America has quietly turned into a massive movement across the United States. The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) now has chapters in all 50 states and 100,000 members, according to the Wall Street Journal.
While many might think that Americans would not vote for any politician who described themselves as a socialist given the country’s history and current political mood, survey data show that Americans may be ready for democratic socialism. Why?
"It's the economy, stupid".
Namely, the Neoliberal-Neoclassical "small government" economy, which has resulted in the current c-o-l and housing crises for low income workers.
........
But the question arises: how to fund the necessary government spending to deliver the esentials for all - higher taxes, or government-debt write-off, or some other method?
Btw, in Oz only the Greens promote higher taxes on wealth and corporations, but the Greens vote has flatlined because the public (including economists, media and politicians) don't understand how money is created, and how to avoid inflation.
ie money is created
ex nihilo, and inflation is avoided by balancing aggregate supply and aggregate demand.
