NSW Second State to Ban Nazi Symbols
Aug 12th, 2022 at 7:44pm

Intentionally waving a Nazi flag in New South Wales or displaying
memorabilia bearing swastikas could now land a person in jail for
up to a year, along with a fine of over $100,000.  The NSW Crimes
Amendment [prohibition on display of Nazi symbols] Bill 2022 swiftly
and unanimously passed the NSW upper house yesterday.

A section in the bill allows for the swastika symbol to be used in
academic, historical or educational settings, thereby paving the way
for its display by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains for whom it holds
religious significance.

NSW joins Victoria in banning the offensive Nazi symbolism from
public display.  Which will hopefully consign these kinds of mental
midgets to the waste bin of history...

This is a bad move. Freedom of expression applies to everyone, no matter how offensive their ideology. Banning Nazi symbols will only give those who identify with such things a sense of grievance and will make them more attractive to other disaffected people.

Better to have these ideologies out in the open where they can be seen for what they are rather than driven underground.

As long as they understand it's a symbol of extreme socialism. I'm surprised though that the Liberal Party is joining in to ban it, they were doing what the Nazis did when they conscripted thousands of young blokes in the 60s, taking them off to camps and treated them like dirt, giving them nothing and throwing them on the waste heap when they'd finished exploiting them. I've never voted for the Nazi Liberal coalition, and never will, (nor the ALP)

Nazi symbols wouldn't be out of place outside Public Hospitals, for all the people they've killed, my mother included. They kill children as well, just like Dr Mengele, Karl Brandt, Carl Clauberg did in Nazi Germany ... mercy killings

You can ban the symbols, but you can't take the "Nazi" out of the politicians who are born that way

People born with Nazi Disease usually have no idea they are carrying it... we get one or two here... often purporting to be of the 'woke left', but whose every action and behaviour is Nazi to the core...

Yes.  The swastika as a Nazi symbol is—or should be—seen as offensive
by any rational thinker.  Particularly as its reincarnation has become a
symbol of anarchistic violence, divisiveness, and vilification of minority
ethnic groups across the planet.

It's also banned in 17 other countries, including France, Germany, Russia,
and Sweden.

I have to disagree.  The public display of any/all Nazi symbolism has nothing
at all to do with anybody's "freedom of expression".  Quite the contrary in
fact—the swastika is a symbol of oppression, tyranny, and suffering.

And there's no evidence that banning the swastika becomes "more attractive"
to other disaffected people.  That's simply wishful thinking by those who support
its display in public—for whatever bizarre reasons.

The law will not change people's perception of it. At least, not in the way you want.

You don't seem to be aware of what we are discussing. What positive benefit do you see from the ban in terms of the popularity of right wing extremism, and how do you think the law will achieve them?

What have we actually gained from abandoning freedom of speech?

Anyone with any life experience can tell you that banning something makes it more attractive to many people, and banning Nazi symbols will take them from symbols of a despicable ideology to something cool and subversive.

These articles give a good summary of the issue.

Actually I've got no problem with that. As a mother to 4 beautiful children I do not want them seeing shyte like that today AFTER ALL that's happened BECAUSE of that flag. Also as an Aunty to 4 nieces and nephews who are half Jewish (my husband's sister is married to a Jewish scientist) there's no way I'd want to see such a terrible visual prompt for them because these kids know that they have great grandparents who were personally affected by what that flag stood for.

If people don't get that visual prompts function as traumatic triggers then that's on them to learn more before they pass judgement.

Hi Lisa,
it's an idea that cultural Marxists came up with as one part of their
left wing, woke, gay, virtue signalling, multicultural propaganda.
They are giving their ideas teeth and claws.
Expect to see more of it.

You are very naive, you have a lot to learn. Tell me what happened to the baby born with two heads in the Northern Territory - We must be eternally vigilant against tyranny

From small things, big things grow, and if we don't call out Nazi behaviour from within our society and Parliament, it can get worse. Banning is something the German Nazis did a lot of, they banned everything they didn't like. So banning is Nazi behaviour, tyrannical behaviour

Bob Menzies tried to ban the Communist Party, and the People said "NO", and rightly so ... eventually the Communist Party died a natural death in Australia. Menzies was trying to do exactly what the German Nazis did ... and he was acting like a Nazi and he got called out on it. The People were vigilant, to protect free speech

Menzies re-started conscription in the early 60s, and the similarities between the way it was handled it, and with Nazism, was striking. I posted an innocent topic in the "Philosophy" board about those similarities called "Conscripts and Jews Compared", but it got banned (deleted), at least my thorough hour long search failed to find it. The topic listed familiar tactics the Nazis used to get Jews to comply, which then, the Liberal Government used to get Conscripts to comply - cruel and unusual punishment inflicted upon innocent people. Read about Simon Townsend's punishment, there was no empathy, no compassion, and no humility. Our enemy was not the North Vietnamese (whoever they were at the time), our enemy was the Nazi Liberal Party Government

And if you are a very wise and smart thinker, they still are, they still treat [ex]conscripts the way they did in the 60s ... Nazi like

Public hospitals need to wake up too, there's plenty of Nazi creatures without empathy or compassion who call themselves nurses, doctors, and managers there as well

LOL... are you taking the piss?

Banning the public display of the swastika is denying freedom of speech?  Seriously?

What about jailing people for distributing 3D child pornography to receptive,
paying customers? Isn't that also denying the pornographers their freedom
of speech?  After all, they're just pictures—like the swastika—so they can't
really harm anybody can they.

Well, I thought it would've been obvious what the positives were from
banning the swastika in public.  I'm guessing you're either very young,
or not a student of German history and the insidious rise of Nazism.

Do you truly want to support that distorted, ultra-socialist lifestyle in
Australia by allowing people to potentially flood our streets with its
inherent symbolism of oppression and tyranny?   Sad really.

Yes, banning is a Nazi act to begin with

Is the Hammer & Sickle symbol banned? It's just as bad, or worse

Indonesia banned the Hammer & Sickle symbol ...

"In April 2017, Indonesian police detained a Malaysian tourist at a hotel in Mataram for wearing a T-shirt with an image of the hammer and sickle symbol."

To be fair dinkum, the Libs and Labs should ban the Hammer & Sickle as well, or don't ban any symbols at all

The Hammer & Sickle is representative of repression, oppression, starvation, murder, injustice, dictatorship, show trials, no democracy, etc etc

that you have not the faintest notion of its history as utilised by the repressive,
racist German national socialists from 1920 until the end of WW2, that saw
millions of innocent civilians killed in cold blood.

This is really a stupid analogy.  Child porn is illegal, whether recorded or not. It is not the pictures in themselves, it is theact that the pictures evidence.

The swastika is a symbol of an ideology.  Can that ideology be discussed and depicted? Of course. It is not an illegal act to discuss ideas in a way that it is illegal to commit certain acts (recorded or not). There is no context in which child porn is not illegal and despicable.
Nazism and the swastika is offensive in only certain circumstances.

Now all you have to do is differentiate the Nazi swastika from similar designs.

As I'm sure you know, the swastika is an ancient religious symbol,
predominantly in various Eurasian, as well as some African and
native American cultures, and is still used as a symbol of divinity
and spirituality in the Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism religions.

It was appropriated by the Nazi Party and by current neo-Nazis as
emblematic of the Aryan race.  It continues to be strongly associated
with antisemitism and white supremacism.   Which is why it should
be banned.

I also can't believe that you seem to consider Nazism acceptable in
"certain circumstances". If you do, then you might like to reread a
few WW2 history books for a better perspective on its horrors.

Don't be an idiot just because you can be.  I did say, 'certain circumstances':  discussing nazism and the swastika in the context of history, Indian philosophy, intellectual development (the stuff you are proudly ignorant of), history, philosophy (ouch!! ouch!!), sources and antecedents, results, aftermaths, etc.

Topics for discussion. Discussion, examination, reflection, study, etc, etc are NOT acceptance.  FFS.

Reading the sort of comments such as those from Frank and Freediver (above)
I'm surprised at their apparent tolerance of the white supremacist's use of
the repellent symbolism of the swastika, and Nazism.

Following Nazi Germany’s defeat in 1945, subsequent German governments
continued the ban on Nazi symbols and propaganda, including the swastika.
Today in Germany and other European states, public display of Nazi symbols,
including on the Internet, is prohibited by law and individuals violating such
terms are subject to criminal proceedings.

I can only hope that these two are simply taking the piss;  I'd hate to think
they were serious.

Ignorant, parochial.

The swastika is not the same in Poland and India. Nazism is not the same in Germany, Poland, France etc that lived under it as it is in Australia, or the US or UK that defeated it.

You are ignorant. Don't flaunt it.

I'd say one positive is that any Jewish Aussies will be feeling a sense of
relief that these anti-semetists won't be able to parade the swastika in
public.  Australia has the ninth largest Jewish population in the world
with an estimated 112,000 Jewish people, and many of them have direct
familial ties to victims of the holocaust—parents or grandparents.

I don't see that banning the swastika in Australia can have any effect on
the small neo-Nazi groups, which are despised by the vast majority of
rational Aussies.  It certainly won't improve their image—such as it is.

The swastika is seldom used by the larger, hard-core white supremacist
groups. This is Blair Cottrell, an Australian far-right extremist, often described
as a neo-Nazi, and former chairman and founding member of the United
Patriots Front and the Lads Society addressing his supporters.

...

And... not a swastika in sight here either.

...

The ban on the swastika in public will be easy to enforce;  the carrier is
arrested on the spot by police and taken into custody.     All too easy.

Here's a question

If displaying the swastica is illegal in NSW, does that mean people who have it tattooed on their bodies cannot go out in public unless it;s covered?

Ignorance is your special power, pal.

The swastika symbol, 卐 or 卍, is an ancient religious symbol, predominantly in various Eurasian, as well as some African and American cultures, now also widely recognized for its appropriation by the Nazi Party and by neo-Nazis.[1][2] It continues to be used as a symbol of divinity and spirituality in Indian religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.[3][4][5][6][1] It generally takes the form of a cross,[A] the arms of which are of equal length and perpendicular to the adjacent arms, each bent midway at a right angle.[8][9]

NSW Department of Communities and Justice media release:

“This bill will also protect those that use a swastika for religious and spiritual reasons including Buddhists, Hindus and Jains. It clearly states that the displaying of a swastika in connection with these spiritualties will not be deemed a Nazi symbol.”

You are an idiot, she-moth and gwegggy shite is a vile, dishonest turd. Not hard to see at all.

The vile, repellant turd concealed that it was actually vandalism by somebody exactly as vile and stupid and repulsive as him.  And you, po-faced blinkered, seething little rebel uncritically - because of years of undergraduate brain washing - lap it up. The stinker and the nitwit.

Swastika sign alongside 'TRUMP' found on university campus in Texas
The incident was the third act of racist vandalism on the campus this month.

06th February 2017

HOUSTON: The word "TRUMP" accompanied a swastika symbol drawn with a dark coloured chalk at the statue of the founder of a university here in the US state of Texas, in the third act of racist vandalism on the campus this month. The Nazi symbol was drawn on the base of the founder William Marsh Rice's 2,000-pound statue in the heart of the Academic Quad lawn at Rice University, the Houston Chronicle reported.

It accompanied the word "TRUMP", referring to the new US President Donald Trump. The incident was the third act of racist vandalism on the campus this month. Rice was not Jewish although the prestigious university does have a large Jewish student population. "I have had it with this behaviour," undergraduate dean John Hutchinson said in a statement released by the university that was also posted on Facebook.

"The use of the swastika clearly reveals that whoever did this is either ignorant of the history of true evil associated with this emblem of hate or is genuinely motivated by blind hatred." If a student is discovered to have drawn the graffiti, he or she faces expulsion from the university, Hutchinson reportedly said. Meanwhile, similar signs were found in Chicago and New York too.

Chicago Police released a surveillance video yesterday that shows a man smashing the front window of a synagogue and placing swastikas on the front door. In the video, the suspect pulls up to the synagogue curb in a dark-coloured SUV just after midnight, places the stickers on the front door and then breaks the glass with a metal object. He then gets back in the car and flees the scene.

So you don't think the banning will have any effect on any right wing groups?

Put it this way:  the ban certainly won't help them attract more members,
nor have any positive effect on their image.  It'll only make them look more
like the losers and social misfits they are.    Little kids losing their toys for
being naughty LOL.

You don't think being martyrs for freedom of expression might help their image?

Why did this even go to trial?

Wagga Wagga man charged with displaying Nazi symbols over shopfront poster

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-07-11/wagga-wagga-man-charged-with-displaying-nazi-symbols/105520548

A man has been charged under recently introduced laws banning the display of Nazi symbols over a shopfront poster depicting Coalition politicians and Australian billionaires as German World War II soldiers.

The display, a series of posters depicting then-opposition leader Peter Dutton, former deputy prime minister Michael McCormack, and miners Gina Rinehart and Clive Palmer dressed as Nazis, appeared in a Wagga Wagga shop window during the March federal Election campaign.

On March 31, police were alerted to the business storefront display on the city's main street.

At the time, police told the ABC that it had sought legal advice, and it was determined the display did not break the Australian Criminal Code.

On Tuesday July 8 "following further inquiries", police charged the 69-year-old with knowingly displaying Nazi symbols without an excuse.

NSW hate crime laws were passed in February this year in response to an increase in hate speech and a string of anti-Semitic incidents in the state.

The shop owner was served a court attendance notice to appear on August 20.

McCormack slams posters of himself, Dutton, Rinehart and Palmer in Nazi uniforms

Former Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack has slammed a display in a storefront window in southern New South Wales that depicts Coalition politicians and billionaires as Nazis.

The series of posters portrays Mr McCormack, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, and business leaders Gina Rinehart and Clive Palmer in German World War II army uniforms.

The posters are on display in a storefront on Wagga Wagga's main street.

Mr McCormack, the Member for Riverina, which includes Wagga Wagga, slammed the display.

Mr McCormack said on social media he was pictured alongside the Opposition leader and "mining magnates" in "World War II-era German uniform … Iron Cross medals and Nazi eagle emblems have also been added".

He said he had alerted Mr Dutton's office about the display.

"He's not going to get bogged down with some vile window in a country main street that shouldn't have happened in the first place," he said.

A pixelated version of Mr McCormack's poster has since replaced the initial image of him.

How does one tell a Nazi swastika from a Hindu etc, one?

Or a Roman swastika of Caesar's time?

Good point, but then who would expect politicians to know anything about the Finns in WW II?

using a Nazi salute?

The swastika appears on the Balmoral War Memorial in Scotland, which is appropriate as it is an ancient Celtic symbol.

Why is our State letting the Nazis win?

The Mind Boggled at 'NSW Second State' - how many separate and  (gasps) sovereign 'states' is it now?

The New State of Northunter ... stretching from the Hunter River and a parallel from its source to the borders with Queenslund and south australia - as the first stop in splitting up the over-fat and controlled by central city government  (Capital City in Hunger Games) state of NSW - now long outdated with modern travel and technology and population growth - into more manageable regional states with more interest in their own real issues and not those of city Slickers and Grifters.

I'll map that First Step up for yez..

I envisage cutting 'er off at the pass from Newcastle - maybe initially straight line across - making two states... then steadily dividing off all the other bits.. Faroutahere already has a cold water port way down at the Murray - if they can keep the Abos from taking all the land .... ... in the rain these days maybe Northunderwanterland for the North Coast Capital city Lismore Springs or something..... New England stands alone... the Independent Duchy of Nimbin is - of course - the high country....  Riverina State is good... Orange region?   Ummm...  Orangatania?  Blue Mountains - Transhillvania...

Those Regions pretty much split themselves into New States there... near a dozen - break the stranglehold of the Big Smoke choking the life out of NSW with its over-centralised government filled with all the rabble of planet Earth who know not the Australian Way...  resurrecting full gun ownership rights for the New States could serve to limit the expansion of crime............maybe trim a few rabble rousers....

Always wondered about a name for a dental clinic - Mass o' chew sets .... them early American Indians had the BEST names for places...  maybe for the Elephant's Graveyard of the Far North Coast... Massochewsets ...bite yer leg off wif me choppers!!

Easy to see all the new states - not just the 'second state' ...

Yup - there it is - right in the middle - a Homeland for all the latte` sipping everyone but you luvvahs social science steeped educated fools who think they know how to devise policy - go then - devise policy for your new small state that takes in everyone who agrees with you..  NSW - Newcastle City, Sydney and Wollongong - and well may they rot.

Southronaria might want to cut out Goulburn and Wollongong.... keep the good bits and where it can keep a close eye on the politician's Homeland with all its trendy ideas and other madness....

We don't mind keeping Newcastle hinterland.. cut it off at the cemetery...
