Nuclear bomb tests in Oz
Aug 10th, 2022 at 1:01pm

Nuclear bomb tests at Maralinga triggered Hedley Marston to study fallout over Australia - I have visited Maralinga, during the last cleanup conducted there.  An eerie place. Roll Eyes

While there is still radiation present, it is limited to areas around surface zero of the explosions and there are warning signs in those areas advising people to limit their exposure.

As the article admits, the place has quite a few visitors and has had for decades. When I was there the blokes off the gas rigs had set up a nice little fishing camp and the RAN often had survey partys working there.  More of the ABCs anti nuclear fear mongering.  Roll Eyes

What did Australia get out of those tests?
We certainly got a dose of radioactive fallout and
it contaminated land for millions of years.

Were we privy to any atom bomb design secrets?
I suppose we'll never know?
It's all shrouded in secrecy.

Basically, Australia got the assurance that it's Ally had safely working bombs, Bobby, not something to easily overlook.

We were promised access to British Atomic bomb design secrets but the British ever mindful of American sensibilities did not follow through on that.   It did not stop the tests but that was typical of "British to his bootstraps" Bob Menzies who supported the British in all things. How would you know that?
Surely atomic secrets are just that - secrets?

There have been numerous books published on what is publicly known now about the decisions made at the time about the matter.  I have also studied under Des Ball, before he got sucked into the Pentagon and Andy Mack.  All but the bomb designs are basically known.  Go to a library and check it out, Bobby, it you don't believe me...  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

As Brian points out Bobby, this is all in the public domain. The Menzies government considered obtaining nuclear weapons for Australia, but as the US was pushing hard on non-proliferation at the time it would not have been a good look for a US ally to do something the US was pushing against. Therefore the Australian programme was binned on the understanding that The US and UK would see to our nuclear defence and possibly even supply weapons if needed.

Wow - an interesting fellow:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Des_Ball

What that article does not mention is his conviction for drug possession.  He liked to smoke Marijuana and was convicted of it's possession because of a petty dispute with his neighbour.  His neighbour was pissed off because Des allowed a tree to overgrow his neighbour's yard.  His neighbour cut is back and dumped all the cuttings over the fence in Des's yard.  Des, dumped all the cuttings back in his neighbour's yard.  His neighbour rang the coppers and dobbed him in.  Des was convicted.

A few months later, Des received an invite to speak at an American conference.  Because of his conviction, he knew he'd have difficulty getting a visa.  So, he took his letter over the lake (Burley-Griffin) to the US Embassy.  When the clerk asked him, "his reason for wanting a visa to the United States," he apparently produced his invite.  The clerks eyes bulged.  It thanked him for his past contributions and invited him to attend the conference, signed President Jimmy Carter.  He got his visa.  Wink

Des was a bit of a bastard.  He often got a pet congressman to read a contribution into the congressional record and he would then quote the congressional record rather than his own contribution, quoting from his own books.  He usually knew his stuff the problem no one else did and so, rather than appear as a know-it-all, he used a congressional record reference.   Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Biden offers stark ‘Armageddon’ warning on the dangers of Putin’s nuclear threats.

Brian -
I'll let you research China,
they are having a massive buildup of nukes right now.
I can't spoon feed you everything.    Roll Eyes Roll Eyes
