Isn't she just another foreigner born overseas, spent a short period in Australia, but lived more like an American Media type (as does the Australian Media) and never really looked back?

I mean, she's a Pom no?
Nicole Kidman is a Hawaiin.
Daddo's are Canadians.
etc, etc

She's just another foreigner that Australians just try to steal and sponge off as their 'own' possessively.
Always thought of her as your 'typical' American media type, more than Australian. Born a Pom too.

...but hey hey - the Australian Media is really 'America'.

Australia: ruled by Britain, populated by people who live like they're in America.

Yes Boris she lived and was schooled in Melbourne. I don't remember personally but history reveals the family lived here when her Dad was a professor at Melbourne University. I know she went to University High through a friend who taught there until recently....part of the school's history I guess.

The Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre here in Melbourne, part of her philanthropic achievement, has saved lives and assisted families in countless measure.

While media coverage of her passing appears to be primarily focussing on her career (not unreasonable on the world stage), for me, her humanitarian record stands supreme.

She was beautiful and a very special Lady

She came from a very distinguished family

She went to the UK and US for her music - but her heart was in Australia I believe

Yes… that’s the bottom line … and she never let it be forgotten to the US of A….that she was from Australia.

That in itself is a huge achievement! How much red tape and legal and medical jargon she must’ve had to endure to be able to finally open that centre. Given she is not a doctor… and she was battling and trying to maintain cancer herself.
I think it may have been a tremendous toll on her in many ways… but she never showed it… always smiling and thinking/saying positive stuff.

I’m feeling shattered at these news of deaths from two Australian female singers I loved and grew up with. As most of us did.
I recall how a 16 year old Olivia went overseas with Pat Carroll I think it was. When I saw Olivia for the first time in the newspaper about this trip… I thought how beautiful she was! I recall when she was in the USA doing songs and movies… how they likened her clean image with Doris Day and Olivia said she was honoured and flattered to be compared to Doris.

RIP Olivia…. We will all miss you xx

Those were the days, Lols. That was the Libby we all remember, before the sharks and hustlers got to her. With the right direction, she could have had a career like Patti Newton -  appearing regularly on This Is Your Life (she knew everybody), the odd advert for denture powder and a double page family spread each month in the Women's Weekly.

Now, that's tasteful. No aerobics videos, no awful Las Vegas shows and no appearances on Hey Hey It's Saturday.

I'm not racist, dear, but Libby was a real lady before the Jews got their hands all over her.

I'm sorry, but it's true.

Yes America stole our girl… but they loved her… Koala Blue store n all.
She was their new Doris Day… to which Olivia said she was flattered and honoured to be compared with Doris.
I just say… that “physical” song vid was a bit of a “wow …wha…?” Then I found out certain US states banned it… geez…. Haven’t we come a long way since then!
I was thinking about others that have departed in this last 12 months
..Doug Parkinson, Bert, Sidney Poitier, Carla Zampatti, Archie, Judith and Warnie.
There’s more I know but I’m starting to feel a part of my entertained life has just gone out the stage exit, as most of us in the audience here are feeling.
Reflections of the way life used to be….

Well yes, this is so. Libby did introduce our national food to the Yanks. Granted, there was a slight lift in Vegemite sales.

But hawking off a few Ken Done T shirts and Jenny Kee jumpers at ridiculous prices does not compensate for abandoning our race in its time of need, no?

While we were winning the America's Cup and celebrating our jolly bicentennial, Libby was riding around on that silly American ranch of hers. It's no excuse. She should have been back here, treading the boards and doing guest appearances on Wheel Of Fortune, Perfect Match and Celebrity It's A Knockout.

I'm sorry, Lols, it's just not good enough.

I understand how you feel… and I admit… I was horrified we were left behind… at that time of career pursuing… I was upset America swallowed her up …. But…. It was evident where her heart was and how she never made USA forget she was our Aussie gal….
It became more apparent we were always made to feel in touch with Livvy no matter where she was… or what she was doing.
She was like an old friend that never lost contact with us.
Sure… I would’ve loved her to be stuck in Oz with limited work but she made it big in the USA… as a result… she was a huge philanthropist and even opened up a cancer wellness/research centre in Melbourne.
Had she not made it big over in USA…. none of this could’ve transpired, not to this magnitude.

There were of course many other musicians going overseas to try and make it big… but failed… or… with success… never felt in touch with them again.

One group I’m thinking of… Human Nature…. I went to see their live performance along with Doug Parkinson … absolutely loved it… and now… they’re swallowed up by Vegas…. I have no idea how they’re doing… successful I would imagine. But lost touch.

Don't underestimate "soft power." She had it in spades.

I like that. Reminds me that there is some validity that one can catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

I came across this tribute I wanted to share which I think is lovely.

Elizabeth Taylor single-handedly improved America's poor initial response to AIDS by using her soft power. Married to a US senator at the time, she would slip little notes into the pockets of men who grew up idolizing her encouraging them to fund the AIDS response ... and it worked.
