The Star of The South offshore wind farm (of course) won't use up
any arable or agricultural land. The transmission cabling will all be
underground, and the existing offshore gas and oil platforms have
proved that these structures have had no impact on ocean flora or
fauna since 1965.
There are now 23 offshore platforms and installations in Bass Strait,
including the new Marlin B platform and Kipper sub-sea wells, which
feed a network of 600km of underwater pipelines.
The propsed SoTS site is 496km
2 or 190 square miles in
area, for a 2.2GW output—equal to the Loy Yang coal-fired power
station in the Latrobe Valley.
The issue of migrating birds is still being investigated; The Australia
Institute contends that the "average death rate is 1–2 birds per turbine
per year" however, these figures are considered to be inaccurate due
to the frequent removal of carcasses by scavengers. However, a report
on bird and bat mortality commissioned by AGL Energy for its Macarthur
Wind Farm (near Hamilton in Western Victoria) found that around 10
birds were killed by each turbine in a 12-month period.
The results of a multi-year scientific study in Denmark has concluded
that birds are quite good at avoiding wind turbine blades, putting a serious
dent in a common argument raised by anti-wind and -renewable activists.
