...Yes, the unpredictable is always a risk. Earth might be hit by an asteroid, a pandemic may wipe out vast numbers, Aliens may invade.....and the chance of a serious issue with a nuclear reactor or its spent fuel  is about as likely as any of these. ( Less so compared to a pandemic)

In 68 years of nuclear power plant operation there has been one major incident, Chernobyl, where the problem was a combination of shoddy workmanship and a system that did not allow for initiative and problem solving.  The other two non- incidents beloved of the anti nuclear alarmists, Three Mile Island and Fukushima caused no radiation related deaths or injuries.

There are currently 439 nuclear power plants  operating world wide, not only in countries  we think of as major players in the nuclear game, but in places like Mexico, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Brazil and others.

The 'waste' problem so beloved of opponents is being solved by reprocessing. Currently around 90% of used fuel can be reprocessed and used again. The technology is improving all the time and the amount of spent fuel requiring long term storage is minimal.

There is no reason that Australia cannot take advantage of this cheap and clean source of energy.

I agree totally.  Chernobyl was based on nuclear power generation
using 1948 technology, and should of course never have been built.
An inexperienced team and inadequate designs at the plant were
later found to be the cause of the disaster.

Unfortunately it's become the default safety "standard" by which the
tree-huggers judge current nuclear power stations. Last year, in China,
93 coal miners died, and 10 in the US—but you never hear the greenies
mentioning that in comparison to the zero deaths in nuclear power
stations during the past ten years, or even the single confirmed death
from Fukushima.

But when a nuclear meltdown happens
there is always an unforeseen reason.   Embarrassed

What about nuclear reactors in war zones?
Ukraine?
Were reactors designed for a war zone?

and yet 3 major incidents in the last 60 odd years a suggests that the chances are much much higher then what you pretend.

and lets not forget, a 4th major incident is brewing right at this moment in the Ukraine. One wayward missile, which in case you're interested occurs much more frequently than say, an alien invasions, and  we'll have another Chernobyl

and in 2080  they'll say that some reactor in Adelaide was built in 2020 using old technology and it should never have been built.

All modern technology becomes obsolete sooner or later. Thats not an excuse for building a reactor now thats an excuse for never building one

And how to protect yourself and family.
Existential threat to Europe.
Strikes close to a storage facility for spent fuel.

There are many sources out there Bobby that can answer your questions. I like this one because he is an expert in the field and generally speaks in laymans terms. https://www.tiktok.com/@theradguyglows?lang=en   You should be able to find a video about anything that concerns you.

It was a rhetorical question -
of course there is no design that can withstand a war zone.

There is a video on the link that discusses the Ukraine situation Bobby, however as it seems you wish to remain ignorant there is nothing more I can do for you.

Don't be so cheeky.
There is a page full of 100s of videos there.
You haven't told me which one.

The more wind power the better, SA is running on 66% renewables, going offshore seems like a big expence for just a few extra gigawatts when we have so much land.

The wind is offshore due to the roaring 40s -

part of the circumpolar wind system.

Is that further south than Tassie.

The Victorian coast is at a bit over 38 degrees latitude.
Tassie is well inside the 40 degrees.
Hobart is 42.9 degrees South.

So why put them in the middle of the ocean with all the swells anchors and rust etc.

Because that's where there are almost constant high winds due
to the Antarctic circumpolar winds.
If you set up a wind turbine inland there can be hardly any wind for months.

Read up on Google about the roaring 40s.

( don't feel bad - Monk didn't know about the roaring 40s either )
