There's an important difference between:

"There's no evidence that X is a contributing cause of Y"And

"The investigation has concluded that there is no evidence that X is a contributing cause of Y".If you don't actively search for a possible causal link between X and Y, then you're not lying if you say, "There's no evidence that X is a contributing cause of Y", although you're still advancing a half-truth.
