Dr Helen Adam from Edith Cowan University’s School of Education believes several of these children’s books ‘perpetuate outdated stereotypes’ and don’t reflect modern families.

Dr Adam and her team of researches observed the stories and characters from the books and broke them down into stereotypical, gender restrictive, sensitive to gender or gender neutral.

The study had 44 educators working with 271 children and 186 books, across eight early learning centres in Australia and the US.

The study concluded that 90 per cent of the books did not represent multicultural Australia fairly and were not inclusive.

People change over time. Cultures change over time. Trying to compare one generation to another is like comparing apples to oranges. Dr Adam needs to start showing tolerance towards people of all ethnicities and cultures. If one society is all caucasian 100 years ago and multicultural today, then it should be reasonable to conclude that it was the way things were 100 years ago and not today. Do not rewrite history just because you feel ashamed that your racial background is not represented at the time.

So let's move on from books that represent a different world? I mean, sure, let's do that

You know that in the US the right really is banning books - heaps of them.

In a case like this where a nutter expresses a view the same people who support genuine book banning have a fit about something that everyone is going to ignore.

I doubt that you will see anyone here supporting these books being banned.

“The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” published in 1969, was welcomed by parents and delighted kids with its story of the metamorphosis of a green and red caterpillar with a touch of blue and brown to a proudly multi-colored butterfly.

I forget what the story was about, seeing that it has been 38 years since I last heard it read to me. But, 1969 was a very different era in Australia than it is today. 95% of Australians were caucasian. I do not see how The Very Hungry Caterpillar could be an insult to the way Australians of modern day are represented. The theme of the story is about "change". Changing for the the better, it seems.

Edit: I have just watched someone read the book on youtube. What an absolute ridiculous reason to be "researching" for problems in a children's book. A lack of diversity? I would be sure that the caterpillars of the world do not give a damn.

It continues to be true some vague statement was made at a university and literally no one is trying to ban this book

I would be concerned if "researchers" are getting funding to pick faults in children's books that nobody gave any concern about in the last 50 years.

I don't think that's remotely what is going on.  this always happens.  A group in a university says something that most people would think is a bit extreme, and the right act as if these people are deciding public policy.  They are not.  I'd like books to become more inclusive of other races, and LGBTQI families.  That doesn't mean I want to ban books that exist today.

Read the article posted on the topic.

"Dr Adam and her team of researches observed the stories and characters from the books and broke them down into stereotypical, gender restrictive, sensitive to gender or gender neutral".

If you are getting funding to attack a children's book based on lack of overt political correctness, you are wasting money funded to you by the university. I think I would rather my HECS debt be erased rather than universities funding such woke research.

I would be astonished if the core work they are doing is as you describe.  I also doubt they got paid a lot to read this book once and tick a few boxes

It takes less than 2 minutes to read the book. That could have been a 2 minute power nap so that they could refocus on more important matters to research.

Nah. I'm a Celibate male. It's a 'beautiful' life.
Where I've jumped upon the horse of Celibacy and rode into the sunset to serve the great cause.
While the 'sexually dysfuntional' fall off the horse to kiss the dirty upon the 'other side'.
They always make a 'poof' sound when they hit the ground.

I believe the word you want is incel....

Wait, you're a proud boy? HAHAHAHAAAA!!!!!

Gee. Did you get that from American Media? Roll Eyes
So you see a Karen as an angry white woman in America.
I see a Karen as a people of Cambodia/Laos.
...I think my interpretation of Celibacy is a bit more proactive than your lame incel remark, because its about 'Choice'.
So this is how you confront the facts? Lefty media 'stupid' interpretations with the latest fad insults that have a used-by-date of just a few years.  Roll Eyes

I think you need to do better than that if you want to deal with a 'Celibate' male like me.

Also Mr Future Left.

I neither agree with 'extremist' Left or Right, but I do 'accept' that both exist.
I'm a middle-stump bowler - no 'wides' out to the off or on-side, from me.
I enjoy when Left and Right work together like the hemispheres of the brain working together.
Unlike the 'extremists' who are 'half-wits' for lack of co-operation and taking 'Anti' views instead.

You wanna be 'extremist' Left and be 'Anti-Right' - go ahead, but do take it on the chin and show some character.
There are always more than just one right answer to a problem on this planet... and there's more than just the 'Media' that is at play and is justified.

It's a big world. Bigger than just being Left or Right.
