Of course, that's why Sir Thomas Playford nationalized the energy sector in SA, so the community could have cheap electricity , rather than supporting the profits of the price-gouging  Adelaide Electricity Company.

And now being gouged by the east coast network.  One hour on a Sunday is not proof of concept. Roll Eyes

"Australia’s electricity and gas network businesses are held in public and private ownership.
• 100 per cent privately owned electricity networks: Victoria, South Australia
• 100 per cent government owned electricity networks: Tasmania, Western Australia,
Northern Territory and Queensland
• In NSW, one electricity network is privately owned, two are 50.4 per cent
privately owned and one is fully government owned. The Australian Capital
Territory’s electricity network is a joint public and privately owned entity.
• Australia’s gas distribution providers are all privately owned, with the exception of
the ACT’s, which is half government owned.

Failing MMT, the government will need to outline the plan  enable transition to renewables, so private companies will invest in renewables. We will see how that works, in the following years and COP meetings etc.

That's right; government COULD  be authorized to spend money into existence, to buy the fossil industry and transition to green. But the world will stumble along with profit-seeking private sector investment ..until it proves to be inadequate for the transitioning task.

Eradication of war and poverty, and establishment of universal sustainable prosperity,  IS only a matter of resource mobilization (in both the public and private sector) , not money;  if that's "magic", the trick is very obvious, except perhaps to profit seeking  flat earth 'invisible hand' market ideologues like yourself, who want to reserve money creation powers to the private sector, for your own benefit.

No,  neoliberals led by classical  market ideologues who misunderstood the causes of the 70's stagflation insisted on erroneous  privatization dogma (as you did recently, rejecting the "govt's tit").

Re SA:  The Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA) was the South Australian Government-owned monopoly vertically integrated electricity provider from 1946 until its privatisation in 1999.

Because private companies are hooked on the drug of profits, and won't invest in new transmission (contemptuously referred as "gold plating" by the privatization stooges) and new storage, when profits are easily more extracted from existing fossil power plants.

You are displaying your confusion regularly now; the world is committed to 100% renewables by 2050/60.

My point is the inability of the private sector to reach that goal will be shown sooner or later.

Quote:
Yes. Remind me again why we should trust you? Grin Grin Grin Grin

Irrelevant; what the world agrees must be done, will be done one way or another (deadline 2050/60)

Quote:
You mean there are currently no ongoing wars? Roll Eyes

I mean war has always existed (in a world of 'scarce' resources) and will continue until we mobilize resources to ensure universal access to  essentials first (on the public sector's "tit") and after that, discretionary  spending determined by "invisble hand" private sector markets.

Quote:
You mean that Attenborough who lied about walruses falling to their death because climate? And not because they were chased by those cute'n'cuddly poley bears? Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Change of topic from environmental degradation to  natural predation; I presume Attenbororough saw a  relationship between  the two processes (man-made environmental pollution (and retreating ice),  and nature's predation.

Speaking of "cute and cuddly":  your  blind Conservative survival of the fittest  "rights" , neoliberal ideology is the cause of  war and poverty.

Now both in Texas and Ukraine - the "right" of civilians to  bear military grade weapons for 'self-defense' (that's working well in the US); and the  "right" of nations to settle disputes in war. Neanderthals, all of you; extinction awaits, in the age of MAD.

Quote:
Every war?

Yes, boils down to disputes over resources.

Quote:
And yet you want the Africans to have an at best 2nd class energy. Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

More of your ongoing confusion; your vicious self-interested Conservative 'survival of the fittest' ideology fails to see the reason for African poverty is exploitation  of African resources  by greedy Western companies beginning in  the days of colonialism.

So now its our turn to provide Africa with free renewables technology. The conservative flat earth neoliberal economists at the upcoming COP meetings will have to face that fact soon enough, blaming the 3rd world for its poverty  will be exposed for the vicious lie it is.

Quote:
So you say. And tell us why we should trust a liar like you? Roll Eyes

because your vicious 'survival of the fittest'  "rights"  neoliberal ideology, on full display in this debate, shows how this blind ideology  - nothing less than the 'law of the jungle' -  turns truth into lies,  and supports unsustainable capitalist 'business as usual', with its environmental degradation.

June , 2021.
" The environmentalist Bill McKibben once characterized the fossil fuel industry’s behavior as “the most consequential cover-up in US history”. And now for the first time in decades, the lawsuits chart a path toward public accountability that climate activists say has the potential to rival big tobacco’s downfall after it concealed the real dangers of smoking.

Actually "gold plating" was used against the power infrastructure saying they were over doing it.

No, neoliberalism won...which is proving to be the greatest catastrophe of our times, as interest rates, inflation, cost of living, and  inequality,  all rise, with entrenched poverty and increasing homelessness and the biggest housing bubble in the world.

Exactly right. Renewables  are free after the infrastructure is built, that's why Warren isn't interested.

Quote:
Actually "gold plating" was used against the power infrastructure saying they were over doing it.

Now it's being fraudulently used - as you are here -  to hinder the necessary grid upgrade (...heard today the Coalition had no plans to connect Snowy 2 to the grid...hopeless, if not downright evil.)

Yes, that's your self interested  private sector money grubbers for you, the whole sector should be nationalized ASAP, and a smart grid built, rather than a 'gold plated' one to gouge  higher profits from consumers, for private companies.

Allowing for the fact your brain is turned into mash by your flat earth  mainstream neoliberal economics - a form of "brain damage" according to Hazel Henderson -; net zero  is just that, sequestration or no sequestration.

Now economic CCS seems further away from reality than fusion power; but even so, the filthy fossil industry has to go, despite your refusal to admit the reality of fossil-caused damage to health.

As a matter of fact, Australia among all nations, with its vast renewables resources (cheap land, sun and wind) has an un-paralleled opportunity to transition to 100% renewables, AND become a renewables exporting
super power.

Snowy 2 was never going to deliver the promises. You can't put the excess water to a smaller dam without releasing the water somewhere. It would take more power to pump the water uphill than it produces.

You failed to read this - https://theconversation.com/snowy-2-0-will-not-produce-nearly-as-much-electricit...

This is what I found - "In order to return CO2 balance to pre-industrial levels, removals, in theory, would need to sequester more carbon than has been released  by anthropogenic dismantling of natural systems through deforestation and land-use change AND all of the fossil carbon that has been emitted. That’s a tall order. "

Now economic CCS seems further away from reality than fusion power; but even so, the filthy fossil industry has to go, despite your refusal to admit the reality of fossil-caused damage to health.

Perhaps you can provide this proof? You have so far failed to show a peer-reviewed paper supporting your claim.

As a matter of fact, Australia among all nations, with its vast renewables resources (cheap land, sun and wind)has an un-paralleled opportunity to transition to 100% renewables, AND become a renewables exporting
super power.

And that is all unsuported suppositional theory not fact. Roll Eyes

For Warren to be interested, he would need to have the entire intermittent global  maintenance contract....and even then he would not be able to be able to compete with not for profit govt. maintenance.

Snowy 2 was never going to deliver the promises. You can't put the excess water to a smaller dam without releasing the water somewhere. It would take more power to pump the water uphill than it produces.

Debated previously. Provision of  excess renewabale power in the grid via rooftop solar + solar/wind farms means there will always be energy available  "to pump the water uphill".

You failed to read this - https://theconversation.com/snowy-2-0-will-not-produce-nearly-as-much-electricit...

And also you need to read this - https://theconversation.com/nsw-has-approved-snowy-2-0-here-are-six-reasons-why-
thats-a-bad-move-139112

I read it months ago. The gist of the argument was there isn't  sufficient coal generation available  to power  the scheme! Nice example of back to front reasoning...

Even the left wing The Conversation agrees it is a bad idea. Roll Eyes

Nice try,  no cigar. The Conversation, whether "LW" or not, is inhabited by 'brain-damaged' (I love it, thanks Hazel)  mainstream neoliberal economists.

So you lied again You knew it wasn't about fossil fuel energy. Roll Eyes

That's just your brain - unable to follow simple logic - damaged by neoliberal orthodoxy, again. The topic was the grid ("gold-plated"), not the fuel.

So you can't debunk what I said. Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

It's impossible to debunk a brain damaged ideologue; I carry on this debate assuming others who are not so afflicted can extract the truth from the debate for themselves

So an economist not a scientist? ;

Oh dear: mobilization of a nation's resources requires  knowledge of economics, yes, but economics is as much social study as mathematical science. .

But perhaps you can provide a link? We know you are a proven liar. Roll Eyes

CCS is yet to be developed, OZ can run 100% on renewables with present technology (ANU study, already discussed in the  "17 feet of snow " thread.

Quote:
This is what I found - "In order to return CO2 balance to pre-industrial levels, removals, in theory, would need to sequester more carbon than has been released  by anthropogenic dismantling of natural systems through deforestation and land-use change AND all of the fossil carbon that has been emitted. That’s a tall order. "

https://quantis-intl.com/why-science-not-market-forces-must-shape-our-pathway-to...

"Tall order" but not impossible, so let's get to it; with reforestation plus decarbonization.

and before that,  temp changes during the roman empire, so?

Brain damage PLUS early onset dementia? I presented many articles in the '17 feet of snow' thread.

Twiggy Forrest is roaring to go, having already won contracts from overseas customers for his green hydrogen, which much of the globe - without Oz's almost unlimited renewable resources - will require.

And which will enable Oz to replace filthy fossil exports with much more lucrative green hydrogen, green steel and green Aluminium.....plus renewables themselves (eg via undersea cable to Singapore).

Albo is enthusiastic, and - backed by a dozen Greens in the Senate, and a hefty cross-bench in the Reps even more enthusiastic than Labor,  the sky is the limit.

Cheers.
