KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Efforts were underway Tuesday to rescue the last of the defenders inside the Azovstal steel plant in the ruined city of Mariupol after Ukrainian officials said the fighters had “completed their mission” and there was no way to free the plant by military means.
The Ukrainian military avoided using the term “surrender” to describe the effort to pull out of the steel plant to save as many lives as possible. Officials planned to keep trying to save an unknown number of fighters who stayed behind. It was unclear if soldiers evacuated to Russian-controlled areas would be considered prisoners of war.
Ukraine's deputy defense minister said more than 260 fighters, including some badly wounded, were evacuated from the plant Monday and taken to areas under Russia’s control.
“The work to bring the guys home continues, and it requires delicacy and time,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
He said the evacuation to separatist-controlled territory was done to save the fighters who endured weeks of Russian assaults in the maze of underground passages below the plant.
“Ukraine needs Ukrainian heroes to be alive. It’s our principle,” he said.
Russian forces were pounding targets in the industrial heartland of eastern Ukraine known as the Donbas, and the death toll kept climbing with the war set to enter its 12th week.

Members of the extremist Ukrainian unit Azov, who were surrounded and blocked in the Azovstal factory in Mariupol, surrendered unconditionally, said today Dmitry Polianski, the first deputy permanent envoy of Russia to the UN.

The Russian diplomat commented on the report of the "New York Times" on his Twitter account, which announced that Ukraine had declared "the end of its combat mission" in Mariupol, so the extremists were "evacuated" and the hostilities in Azovstal ended, reports TASS.

An exclusive video of the Nazi militants handing over the Azov national unit (banned in Russia) and the Ukrainian army, blocked at Azovstal in Mariupol. Everyone's belongings are carefully inspected and only then are they put on the buses.
A closed session of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation is scheduled for May 26, at which the request of the General Prosecutor's Office to recognize Azov as a terrorist organization will be considered.

Some say that about 600 Azov Nazi fighters are still hiding in the Azavostal steel plant. Surrender is death to them
The exact number of still hidden and well-established defenders of Azovostal is not known, but it is believed that there are about 600 more.
Earlier, they said that surrender was death for them.
Now they have the choice to live or die.

You mean "Somalia" -- the basket case country with a severe impoverished culture and one which is completely dependent on foreign aid for survival?

This is not a successful democratic society being invaded by a less successful authoritarian society. Somalia could be shot up by the Americans today like it was in 1993, and people would not see the violence much different to any other day in the last 30 years.

On May 17, Ukrainian fighters left the Azovstal plant in Mariupol to surrender even after dark.
Alexander Khodakovsky, commander of the Vostok Brigade of the Interior Ministry of the DPR, confirmed the information of Russkaya Vesna that the surrender continued at night. In his Telegram channel, he specified that about six hundred militants came out through his station at night.
Recall, Russkaya Vesna reported that around midnight , crowds of Azov militants and the Armed Forces of Ukraine continue to climb out of all the cracks in the ruins of Azovstal.

“Large forces of the troops of the DPR and Russia have been assembled on the spot, special groups of the Internal Troops of the DPR Ministry of Internal Affairs are taking prisoners,” a military source said from the scene.

Lighting was provided by flares.
Thus, we can confidently speak about the final defeat of the Azov group "OOS": out of two tens of thousands of military personnel, several thousand remained and all of them are a pitiful sight.
Another myth of Ukrainian propaganda burst, just as the myth of “cyborgs” at the Donetsk airport once burst, when the DPR Army occupied the terminal building, and the footage of the British journalist Graham Phillips with the stiffened corpses of Ukrainian militants, more like dirty unshaven homeless people in variegated clothes, flew around the whole world.
