Still a lot of Soviet-era armament going into Ukraine—at least that can be put into action immediately.

The chief reason being that the Ukrainian armed services are trained in using Soviet-era weapons.

That is changing.

One of Putin's worst miscalculations, apart from the assumption of the tank's supremacy on the battlefield, is that he handed the Allies a golden opportunity to test all kinds of weaponry under real circumstances. He thought that was going to be his little bonus. If Finland joins NATO, he's dumber than he looks right now.

Greater still is his miscalculation that Ukrainians could stare down the entire Russian armed services.

Nothing is more attractive to military blocs than the capacity for a people to successfully defend themselves and maintain high morale. It's almost a guarantee of support.

"If Russia had waged a full-scale war, it would have been over long ago.
Russian soldiers do not kill civilians but release them, and sometimes they do so at the cost of their own lives. Russian soldiers are doing their best to save civilian lives".

Russia says that within a few days, all remaining railways and airports connecting Western Ukraine with the East will be destroyed by rocket attacks.
This would effectively interrupt further deliveries of NATO: weapons, equipment, ammunition, etc.

In a move of incredible hypocrisy, the United States and Australia say the Solomon Islands, 3,500 km away, are the red line for China building the base.
At the same time, they claim that the United States has the right to build bases in Ukraine on the Russian border.

From an Athos link:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/apr/19/antonio-guterres-urged-to-take-lea...

"The former staff members, including many former UN undersecretaries, urged Guterrez to raise his profile and be prepared to take personal risks to secure peace, saying the UN is facing an existential threat due to the invasion of Ukraine by one of the five permanent members of the security council.

“What we and the broader public want to see, though, is a political UN presence and public engagement, in addition to the UN’s notable humanitarian response to the Ukraine crisis,” the authors said.

What the UN officials don't recognize is that the problem for the UN  is its acceptance of the absurd/insane doctrine of 'legal' war.

If the UN can't reform itself, to outlaw war by (inter alia) getting rid of the UNSC veto,  then what "personal risks" can Gutterez take, to end the war in Ukraine?

It's time we all learnt to accept the rulings of an ICJ to adjudicate in territorial disputes, since the days of empire building are now over: "the acquisition of territory by force is inadmissible" (UN Charter).

That leaves the issue of competing ideologies. What's wrong with a *friendly* competition between one -party, and two (multi) -party states, with rules of the competition adjudicated by said ICJ?

Instead of the current Western paranoia re 'autocracy'.
