Booby, if Putin gets desperate enough he will press the button.

But it seems he is pretending the war is going fine and “Stage 2” is being started.

He wants a land bridge from Russia through eastern Ukraine to Crimea.

I wonder if some major Ukrainian counterattack is planned for south east Ukraine, break that land bridge Putin wants. This cannoit be done for some weeks until the sun dries out the mud that is caused by the snow and ice melting

When the war is “over” at least with large scale attacks etc—who is going to pay to restore all the civilian infrastructure the russians flattened?

It's becoming increasingly unlikely that the Russian military will detonate a nuke in Ukraine.

The most obvious reason is that fallout would eventually drift to both Europe and Russia.

Also, Putin would, soon after, be deposed at about 250 metres / second.

As it stands now, I agree .. He has nothing to gain.

but if Ukraine started shooting Tomahawk missles into Russian defense systems and infrastructure on the Russian mainland like bobby suggests, then I think the use of nukes would be inevitable.

Yes. Currently Ukraine dominates the information war in Ukraine and, to a significant degree, within Russia.

Any attack on Russian soil would trigger a Russian patriotic instinct that would work to Putin's advantage.

Nonsense - it would teach Russia a lesson.
The Russians think it's OK to send cruise missiles into Ukraine.

But Yeltsin did before Putin became president:

"The NATO Secretary General, Manfred Wörner, would visit Moscow in July 1990, to discuss future cooperation, a first for NATO–Russia relations. In 1991, as the Soviet Union was dissolved, Russian president Boris Yeltsin sent a letter to NATO, suggesting that Russia's long-term aim was to join NATO".

As every schoolboy knows....

NATO has left Ukraine out to dry:

https://edition.cnn.com/europe/live-news/ukraine-russia-putin-news-03-26-22/inde...

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today reiterated his plea for international partners to step up their military assistance, saying his country only asks for 1% of NATO's tanks and planes.

In a Saturday video message posted to social media, Zelensky said the need to strengthen common security in Europe was raised during his two conversations with Polish President Andrezj Duda on Saturday.

Zelensky lamented the fact Ukraine has been waiting for 31 days for this assistance, saying it raises the question of who exactly "is ruling the Euro-Atlantic Alliance."

He called on Ukraine's international partners to "rally and activate their support" for the country, stressing Europe's safety and security hinges on it.

Good point, Great. You support a free and uninvaded Ukraine - after the world bans war.

Good show, no?

Since  your absurd conviction that Western condemnation of Putin could, much less would have, prevented Putin from invading Ukraine, or for that matter any other leader who decides it's in his own interests to invade another country...given your conviction  is THE problem,  I can merely offer the solution to be learnt from the experience of  this current insane war.

Of course Zelensky would demand immediate NATO intervention, he’s the president of Ukraine.

But how else would you and the rest of the world know Ukrainians want nothing to do with Russia?

It’s only because the Ukrainians have shown their resolve without NATO intervention that we know this.

But for NATO to ‘jump in’ would give Putin the ‘proof’ Putin was hoping for that NATO is not just a defensive alliance for its members, but also an invading military bloc outside its borders.
