You're such a fool there’s no point in trying to discuss anything objectively with you. That is you’re not a piece of very, very sloppy software unleashed by so called Marxists onto a world they imagine gullible beyond belief.

Cunning, no?

No, I've been arguing for international law, to outlaw war.

On war: in 1914, Germany believed  it was entitled to as much global influence as the British Empire;  WW2 was a continuation of WW1. In  1946 the Cold War began because of an ideological conflict with the Soviets  whose founding principle was  all people should have a right to prosperity; and now Putin's war is a continuation of the Cold War.

And since 1946 the US has been waging endless wars on any nation with different cultural values, resulting in endless proxy wars in S. America and the M.E. eg,  Bin Laden resented the presence of US military bases in Muslim lands.

You of course - claiming "sovereign individual rights" -are complicit in this never ending warfare because you won't allow war to be outlawed as per the Evatt plan, so you persist in simple-mindedly blaming Putin for the ongoing chaos of war, this time in Ukraine.

Of course Putin shouldn't have attacked Ukraine, but neither should NATO exist, nor should Russians in the East of Ukraine have been subject to discrimination which was causing conflict in Donbass.

And neither should war still be legal, in the age of MAD.

You denying it? I accepted the sources relating to the US secretary of state's  conversations with Putin after the demise of the USSR.

Show me where I have "changed the goal posts".

Oh, and what your solution to the never ending wars in the age of MAD is, not to mention climate change and endemic global poverty.

Go back to the very 1st post you've ever made on OzPol. Under that id. And then keep reading until you get to this post.

I most certainly am. Putin HIMSELF said he did not apply to join NATO. He said, and I quote, he "wasn't going to join a list of nothing countries".

Take it up with Dear Leader, dear.

Enjoy!

So was it Yeltsin? Either way Russia would have been open to joining NATO at the time, because Russia did express interest in the idea.
So the rejection by the West resulted in the hardliners in Russia taking over,  including Putin at that time, according to you

Oh dear...spoke to soon, I should have known you wouldn't be able to discuss the urgent tasks facing humanity without blaming the  CCP for the world's ills.

The urgent tasks facing humanity is the collapse of all totalitarian governments. Nothing is more destructive of human aspiration than they are.

After Russia, the CCP is next.

Invited to join NATO and applying to join NATO are not the same, as everi Paki schoolboy knows.

Ex-Nato head says Putin wanted to join alliance early on in his rule

Vladimir Putin wanted Russia to join Nato but did not want his country to have to go through the usual application process and stand in line “with a lot of countries that don’t matter”, according to a former secretary general of the transatlantic alliance.

George Robertson, a former Labour defence secretary who led Nato between 1999 and 2003, said Putin made it clear at their first meeting that he wanted Russia to be part of western Europe. “They wanted to be part of that secure, stable prosperous west that Russia was out of at the time,” he said.

The Labour peer recalled an early meeting with Putin, who became Russian president in 2000. “Putin said: ‘When are you going to invite us to join Nato?’ And [Robertson] said: ‘Well, we don’t invite people to join Nato, they apply to join Nato.’ And he said: ‘Well, we’re not standing in line with a lot of countries that don’t matter.’”

The account chimes with what Putin told the late David Frost in a BBC interview shortly before he was first inaugurated as Russian president more than 21 years ago. Putin told Frost he would not rule out joining Nato “if and when Russia’s views are taken into account as those of an equal partner”.

He told Frost it was hard for him to visualise Nato as an enemy. “Russia is part of the European culture. And I cannot imagine my own country in isolation from Europe and what we often call the civilised world.”

How does it all end? Not with agreement. My guess is that Putin and Lavrov know the Russian military is being shown up, to any unbiased observer and to NATO. One possible face-saver is to expand the claim that the first phase of the war is over. This would involve the partition of Ukraine down the Dnieper River as they already have much of that territory. They know Ukraine will not accept this, and so Russia can concentrate their forces in the East, and paint Ukraine as the bad guys for not agreeing to peace terms. If this were to happen, I would hope NATO would admit Ukraine as soon as Russians retreat across the boarder north and east of Kyiv.

Yes. Partition is the only viable exit from this mess.

Eastern Ukraine would be ultimately ungovernable from Kiev. There are ethnic Russians who would not be up for Ukrainian rule (as they already are not). Partition seems to be the realpolitik outcome. That may be a bitter pill to swallow for Ukraine, but it would end the future decades of Russian uprisings in the east that they would be required to put down.

And one thing's for certain: Europe would not welcome Ukraine into the EU or NATO if it was fighting an internal eastern war of attrition with Ukrainian-Russians that had no end - just regular reports of atrocities over years.

Putin did not apply, dear, because member states aren't allowed to invade each other.

That's one of the pesky requirements of NATO. I know I know, you can't build an empire if in NATO, so unfair.

But no, Putin never even contemplated, as every schoolboy knows.

My latest war thoughts.

I hope the Ukrainian army doesn’t allow the Russians to leave
from around Kiev and escape to Belarus.
That would be letting war criminals get away.
They need to block the roads – cut off supplies of: ammunition, fuel and food.
They need to round them up and either kill them or capture them
for slave labour to rebuild Ukraine.
Those in charge should be put on trial and hanged in public for war crimes.
There needs to be some justice in this world.
