Have you ever had a good day rock fishing when they were predicting a howling southeaster and 6 foot swell?

Nobody even slightly sane would even try the rocks in conditions like this.

Every year people fail to survive this situation.

That's where common sense comes into it.

Weather like that is a "not for fishing" day.
Even the last few days have been days I'd turn around and go home.

Fishing is meant to be an enjoyable pastime.
Not a trial or a fight to survive.
I don't go out in my boat in big swells with chop and subsequent waves,
( it's not the swell, without waves and chop you just go up and down. A lot depends on the frequency of swell, short frequency is uncomfortable, but a 10 foot swell with 10 second frequency is actually quite pleasant )

Rule of thumb for our comfort is
The period should be no less than 3x the swell.
Or in simple terms.....3 ft swell no less than 9 seconds

And I prefer no white on the water.
But a little is generally ok.

Rock fishing is even easier, if the waves are breaking over your perch.
Go home
The occasional splash is to be expected occasionally, but a wave breaking over the rock you are standing on has far too much power to fight.

As I said, I have been rock fishing all my life.
And never been in any danger.

Agreed, but people still do it.
Mostly people not familiar with the Australian coast and it's propensity to throw the rogue set every now and then.

Quite often, I sit in our radio base and watch people in too small a craft head out onto seas which are far too rough to go into.

Some get a fright and turn around and come back.
Some keep going
Some, we have to rescue.

I have been on the boats, on boat duty, and had to fight serious seas to rescue some clown who took a tinny off shore.

And it's not just off shore.
Most lakes have some nasty waves and chop in the right weather.
I have rescued clowns who have tried to get across the lake with a 10ft tinny and a 4 HP motor in 6 foot waves.

What they fail to realise is that it's not just them they are putting in danger.
It's the rescue teams and anyone fool enough to join them.

But my all time favorite.
A small 10 ft tinny with a 2.5 HP motor.

A family of "large" New Zealanders, wanted to get to the sand island for a picnic.
It was only about 100 metres of very fast flowing water to traverse.

And the tinny had a good 4 inches of freeboard before water started coming over the sides.

And just because they didn't open the vent on the fuel tank and the motor died from fuel starvation, and it was only natural for the biggest guy on the boat to stand up and attempt to restart the motor.

Of course, no one was wearing any of the life jackets that floated away when the tinny went down.
And apparently swimming lessons were not a part of the education of those on board.

They were more than fortunate that the skipper saw the accident happening before the tinny started out and headed their way at full volume.

We got there in time to throw the adults flotation devices while we set about rescuing the three young children.

Once we got them back to shore and towed the tinny back.
We found the motor/ fuel tank problem, explained the tag on the boat identifying MAX NUMBER OF PEOPLE and explained what the "now lost" life jackets were for.

They were very lucky.
Had we not just finished an assist and been in the vicinity.
Had the skipper not been quick enough to see the danger.
Had we not reacted as we had, several people coukd be dead.

That my friend is what common sense IS NOT.

Hubby wants to take me fishing. Reckons I need to be up at 5 am though 😩

I just want to experience catching a flathead or a whiting. Something I could then clean and prep and cook up.

(So I can finally tick that off my list)

My wife loves fishing.
Her family are all fishers and she started when she could first hold a rod.

I didn't get my first rod until I was in my 20s.
Up until then I used a hand line, and while I'm not too shabby with that, a rod is leaps and bounds better.
My little woman can flick a bait within inches of her target, I'm more a several feet accuracy.

Early starts are not compolsory, but tides are critical.
But certian fish, such as flathead, are predators and love the first light and change of tide.
But that don't mean that you can't catch them anytime.
But to catch a flathead during the day you need to target deeper holes and shady spots.

One final thing.
Any flathead over 400mm is most likely a female.
They should be put back alive.
They are the breeders.
WE caught many huge flathead in the lake, my wife holds the record 83cm
My best is 81.
Both returned to the water.

That's it then...if you're Sydney based then my hubby and I are going fishing with you and your wife.

You have made arrangements to have the trash removed when the event is over?

If that's you....colour me jealous.

I have never even seen a tuna when spearfishing.
Not once.
I keep to reefs and rocky outcrops mostly, so not quite where I expect you would find them.
What sort of head did you use?
I'm assuming g a power head, otherwise a less than perfect kill shot woukd see you water sking.

I have been primarily catch and release for over 30 years. Except for prawns.

I can mostly find a way to catch something, often a full quota.
