Analysis: Russian troop build-up sparks unintended NATO renewal

By Robin Emmott and Sabine Siebold

BRUSSELS, Jan 20 (Reuters) - Russia's troop buildup near Ukraine is galvanising NATO defences in Europe that President Vladimir Putin wants to dismantle, giving the alliance a sense of renewal after failures in Afghanistan.

Despite intense diplomacy with Russia, the United States and its NATO allies say they cannot consider demands that Moscow is making for security guarantees while it masses troops near its neighbour's border and holds live-fire exercises in Belarus.

Instead, Western officials, diplomats and former officials say NATO - created in 1949 to deter the Soviet threat - is obliged to consider reinforcements that go against Putin's demand that the alliance must not expand further eastwards.

Neutral countries Finland and Sweden, which have deepened collaboration with the Western alliance, have restarted a debate about joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

French President Emmanuel Macron has offered to send troops to Romania, an offer welcomed by Romania's president, and there is the prospect of more NATO troops being sent to the Black Sea region and the Baltics. read more

Although NATO is under no treaty obligation to defend Ukraine, as the former Soviet republic is not a NATO member,

the tensions with Russia have united member states around what one former alliance official called "a common sense of purpose".

Could be.

When the chips are down, Russia has no respect for China, which is seen as politically backward and threatens Russian influence in central Asia.

Oh I guarrantee you China V Russia. Even Nostrodamus predicted the great 'Sino v Russo' War.
It's inevitable - though don't expect the Media to keep you up to date beyond 3 months behind the fact.

Russia is not the once powerful USSR.
It's between a rock and a hard place (Europe & Asia) and it has to make a choice.
USSR expansionism into Asia was a precursor towards making the entire Northern Hemisphere 'all white' (Yin/Yang) to which General Macarthur contributed the North American 'default cold war alliance' by stating in the Korean War "We are here to kick out the yellow Mongol from Asia". Now you know why N.Korea is scared of the USA.
As the USSR fell, because that 'master plan' was never going to work... of pushing the yellows into Oceania and the Browns into Australia.

Well, there's a lot more to it, but lets just say - Russia is will fall and Australia will rise. Wink
The Yellow Man will retake his path to the north (via Siberia).

...there are already 500,000 Chinese (a lot in uniform) occupying Russian lands.

You could say - Russia's take on the Ukraine is really a cry for help.  Wink

I really can't see Chinese Military sending the majority of the military which is ground force swimming across the pacific to invade North America, compared to crossing the border to fight Russians for their USSR oppressions.
Only N.Korea might bring the USA into the fray somewhat.
But China, being what it is - will attack the 'weaker' prey.  Wink
And that's Russia.

Btw - I've been saying this for over a decade.
Predicting, isn't as mysterious or mystic as you think.
The World is finite and limited, there is only so much humanity can do here. Wink

In Berlin on Thursday, Antony Blinken said the US had been "very clear". Any move by the Russia military into Ukraine would be met by a "swift, severe response".

The previous night, however, President Biden had been far less definitive - distinguishing major invasions from "minor incursions" that could prompt a more limited reaction.

That may have been a candid revelation from the US president, as was his prediction that Mr Putin will "move in" to Ukraine anyway. But it undercut Mr Blinken's efforts on this trip to present the current crises as a stark choice for Russia between diplomacy and conflict, without any mushy middle ground.

Mr Blinken raised the stakes further during his Thursday afternoon speech, perhaps to steel the nerves of US allies gathered in Berlin. This was not a "distant regional dispute", he said, but rather a threat to the international principles of sovereignty and self-determination. If Russia wanted a new Cold War, the US and its allies were ready.

Those words - and Mr Biden's - will hang in the air as Mr Blinken heads to his Geneva meeting with his Russian counterpart on Friday.

It's the End Times:

it was predicted in the Bible and none of you believed it -
plague, pestilence,  earthquakes  eruptions -
look at Tonga -
talk of war  - look at Russia and China.

It was a serious diplomatic blunder by Biden, which the diplomats are having to mop up.

Biden inadvertently sent a message to Putin that incursions into Ukraine are an acceptable middle ground.

Presidents must take a hard line so the diplomats can use that as leverage against the potential 'offender'.

At least senior diplomats get paid well for their work!

The Russians are spinning bullshit to
tell the opposite story.
It's getting very serious.
I fear this will end up as WW3.

The West fears Russia is about to attack Ukraine.
But that's not the way Russians are seeing it on TV

Analysis by Jill Dougherty, for CNN

Updated 1742 GMT (0142 HKT) January 25, 2022

(CNN)Foreign forces bristling with weapons are rolling toward the Ukrainian border. Reconnaissance planes streak overhead. Rumors of "false flag" operations run rampant.
If you're watching state TV in Moscow, you're seeing video of troops and tanks, barbed wire and snipers taking aim, but it's not Russia's forces that are poised for attack -- it's NATO's.
Welcome to Russia's mirror-image depiction of the showdown over Ukraine. In the country's alternate media landscape, NATO forces are carrying out a plan that's been in the works for years: Encircle Russia, topple President Vladimir Putin and seize control of Russia's energy resources.

In Moscow's view, repeated in nearly every newscast and talk show, Ukraine is a failed state entirely controlled by the "puppet master" -- the United States. Europe is a weak and divided collection of lap dogs taking orders from Washington. Even the US, as frighteningly threatening as it is, is weak and divided too, torn apart by political division and racial unrest.

But wait. How can those powers be a threat -- and be weak at the same time? That's one of the conundrums of Russian state propaganda. Thinking things through isn't what they're trying to encourage. Rather they're trying to raise the blood pressure of their viewers -- and to make them very afraid.

It's a terrible worry.
Putin is like Hitler.
I don't see him backing down and sending his troops back to their barracks.
The fact is that no one was threatening Russia.
Everyone was frightened of Russia.
The United Nations has done nothing to ease tensions since Putin invaded Crimea in 2014.
We're right back to 1939 with a new war in Europe.
