Any danger of the elected HoS becoming “rowdy” could be fixed by only allowing them 1 3year term.

Enough time to cause a constitutional crisis by covert undermining of parliament / government using his/her popular mandate.

The process of removal of the HOS is a major problem that remains unanswered by republicans.

Government resigns, HoS term is over. Disbar former politicians form State & Fed level. Nothing wrong with a PM having to convince the HoS to approve a piece of legislation.

You underestimate career politicians.

They do not just resign.

How does a HOG convince a HOS to sign anything he does not want to sign? Particularly if personal enmity between the two exists.

A non-executive HOS must have no choice but to sign if the legislation has lawfully passed through parliament. If the HOS does not grant assent to laws, a constitutional crisis is triggered.

This is one argument for the redundancy of the office of HOS in a country where parliament is sovereign.

Remove the monarchy and you will get something far worse to fill the vacuum.

They are irrelevant.

If the monarchy was removed, corporations would continue to run the world just as they do now.

Nice work from Shell to get one of their ex-employees to run the UK.

The Republican movement needs a new narrative. It has to deliver value for money, not just change for change's sake. The present system works as well, if not better, than most governments around the world. If the only justification is that the Australian head of state should be Australian, it can be argued, he or she, already is. As for this conspiracy theory that secret meetings in high places twist the arm of the GG, well that's bloody childish.

The Republicans need to stop asking Yes or No, and start presenting complete models with the necessary constitutional amendments in detail. In that way, they might whittle down opposition, even if it takes time. They also need to stop accusing their countrymen of being without self-esteem due to our recognition of the good parts of Australia's British heritage. Now pull your thumbs out of your arses and start acting like real and inclusive statesmen.

Exactly. It's like they are trying to shame people into voting for a republic, because they cannot come with a model people actually want.

Australia has already screwed itself. They have no proper military, they really don't produce anything so their GDP is in decline and projected to grow worse, their obesity rates are skyrocketing while their educational system is failing. And they all love to suck on a lot of American dick.

Put it this way, Australia is a special needs child always in need of a babysitter. Being a commonwealth of the hygienically-challenged limey is the best thing that will ever happen to them

I still don't see how a 'Death' and 'Removal' of a Royal: Master (Celebrity) of (Entertainment) Ceremony,

Constitutes a 'Political' change here?

(Oh yeah - we're doing things 'American' style. Silly me

Well said Issuevoter.

Republicans seem more like 'Americans' trying to undermine Australia's 'British' connection more than anything else.
Telling us that we should become a Republic but not really offering up anything constructive as to why.

Are you sure? In the UK, the working head of state lives in a shoddy townhouse and leaves all the pomp and pageantry to the monarchy. Would you rather the two positions be combined?
