The whole body politic is continuously being screwed by greedy fossil profit-gougers who have politicians in their very big pockets lined with filthy lucre extorted by the fossil industry.

Hence they have been hindering rollout of renewables for 2 decades, which is why Europe is still not plugged into the Sahara, backed by nuclear.

Even Albo thinks he has to open new coal and gas in Oz, which is madness: this vast windy desert - the size of Europe - with a mere 25 million people, is the perfect candidate for 100% renewables, should have been achieved a decade ago.

As we are all aware, climate change is one of the greatest crises the world currently faces.

The leaders of nearly all countries are meeting over the next two days to discuss and hopefully commit to actions that will start leading us out of it.

In doing so, one of the key issues that Sri Lanka and some other countries will rightfully draw attention to is that of sustainable nitrogen management.

In October 2019, fourteen nations joined the Colombo Declaration on Sustainable Management.

This important declaration encourages nations to develop national roadmaps for sustainable nitrogen management, with a view to reducing nitrogen waste in half by 2030.

I thank the nations already associated with this declaration and encourage others to do the same.

Nitrogen is an abundant element that is essential to the sustenance of all living things.

However, reactive nitrogen generated by human activity and released into ecosystems worsens climate change.

Overuse of nitrogen, especially in fertilisers, has adverse impacts on soil, water, air, and human health.

For decades, chronic kidney disease has been a serious issue in Sri Lanka’s agricultural heartland.

The overuse of chemical fertilisers has contributed significantly to this problem.

It is in this context that my Government took firm steps to reduce imports of chemical fertilizer, and strongly encourage organic agriculture."

High fossil prices are causing havoc in most nations at present.

A totally wrong conclusion: S.L made many mistakes in its macroeconomic management, not just related to erroneous fertilizer policy.

As did all countries during the pandemic, which is why we now have price rises causing untold cost of living pain for the less well off, all around the world.

Meanwhile Rishi Sunak, no doubt taught by 'flat earth' British neoliberal monetarist economists, wants to raise taxes in the UK, while his conservative colleagues want to lower them...Liz should be a shoe-in....

The Instant Misery Fund (IMF) is complicit in allowing governments to borrow in foreign currencies, - loans which cannot be serviced if access to foreign exchange is choked off, for whatever reasons.

There is a global debt crisis coming – and it won’t stop at Sri Lanka

This is not a crisis created by a few recent external and internal factors, it has been decades in the making. Ever since its “open economic policy” was adopted in the late 1970s, Sri Lanka has been Asia’s poster boy for neoliberal reform, much like Chile in Latin America. The strategy was the now-familiar one of making exports the basis for economic growth, supported by foreign capital inflows. This led to a significant increase in foreign currency debt, something the IMF and the Davos crowd actively encouraged.

In the period after the 2008 global financial crisis, as low interest rates in advanced economies led to the availability of cheap credit, the Sri Lankan government relied on international sovereign bonds to finance its own spending. Between 2012 and 2020, the debt to GDP ratio doubled to around 80%, with a growing share of this in bonds. The payments due on these debts kept rising in relation to what Sri Lanka could earn from exports and the money sent back home by Sri Lankans working abroad. The disruptions caused by the pandemic and the war in Ukraine made matters much worse, by causing export earnings to fall and sharply increasing the price of essential imports including food and fuel. Foreign exchange reserves plummeted – but the government had to keep paying interest even when it could not import essential fuel".

[Mainstream neoliberal economists don't want to know any of this; and meanwhile they think the private sector will fund transition to renewables if governments impose a carbon tax].
