You have the option of buying 600mL water for $3. Or a 600mL soft drink for $4.50. These days, I bring my own water to the cinema to watch a movie. Not paying at least $5 for a soft drink.

I flat out refuse to buy bottled water (for plastic waste reasons) and literally can't remember the last time I did.

We fitted water filters to our drinking water taps years ago
Biological, particulate and mineral/ metal.

I foolishly cut the filter up one day when I replaced it.
It's been years, but the stain is still on the garage floor.
The stink was abominable.

This is the crap that comes through the tap.

We fill containers when we go anywhere rather than buy or suffer the crap.

The water at my place is quite bad. Even after double filtering the water before consumption, the rust in the water still gets through. I buy 2 x 24 packs of 600mL bottle water. $9 per packet. It is $18 a fortnight that I am happy to spend to keep hydrated. I just cannot stand having to spend more than $1 for a cold bottle of water. $3 for a 600mL bottle of water is just highway robbery. Let the customers have cheap water.

If you have an Aldi near you, they have water for about 50 cents a bottle.

I regularly buy their lightly sparkling spring water.

12 bottles for about $6.

And then you get $1.20 back when you recycle the empties.

So, quite cheap.

Just the other week, I changed my water bottle filters for the first time in 6 months. I also decided to rearrange which order which I double-filtered the water. The main jug was leaking up a storm. Instead of filling up the jugs with tap water, I used the bottled water to fill the jugs. It is pointless when you can just put water bottles into the fridge. But I prefer to have at least a litre of cold water on hand to drink when I get home from a walk.

The Woolies water packs (of 24x600mL bottles) are $9. That is 37.5c per bottle. Mum and Dad come around every weekend before recycle night to collect the 40 bottles that I go through per fortnight.

you remind me of a girl (about 17 or 18yrs of age)  I saw at woolies many years ago ... she was huge, and her and her mum were in the chip aisle. The girl grabbed four packets of crisps, and when her mum told her it was to many, the girl cried out that they were 'diet' crisps and therefore she could eat more of them

It's like the ones who buy hot chips with gravy for lunch, but always get Diet Coke to wash it down.

Yes! Me too!

Oh and I noticed something a few years back ....some of these plastic bottles are made from plastic which smells different and strong now. It's like a chemical smell which comes through into the water. It's sickening (to me anyway).

I think what's happening is this: in order to maintain/increase their profits ... these organisations are now using cheaper plastic containers.

So no more plastic water bottles here.

If you reuse plastic water bottles, the bottles will break down over time. You might get two or three reuses for the water bottles. But the plastic leaches into the water after that.

Better for you and better for the environment if you buy 10l boxes of water. They cost $3.50 at Coles.

Even better, get water delivered. They reuse their bottles.

I have a 3 litre bottle of water in the fridge, filled from my filtered water, all the time.
And you need to put it in PET bottles.

Quote:
PET is approved as safe for contact with foods and beverages by the FDA and health-safety agencies throughout the world. The safety of PET for food, beverage, pharmaceutical and medical applications has been repeatedly demonstrated through extensive studies, regulatory approvals, testing, and its widespread acceptance for more than 30 years. PET does not contain bisphenol-A (BPA) or phthalates (plasticizers).

Because of PET's unique properties, it is rapidly becoming the world's preferred packaging material for foods and beverages. Like glass, it is a very strong and inert material that does not react with foods, is resistant to attack by micro-organisms, and will not biologically degrade. But unlike glass, PET is extremely lightweight, easy and efficient to transport, and shatterproof.

What about the pollution to our environment all up just in producing these millions of plastic water bottles in the first place?

And here's another question for everyone: how did we cope BEFORE all these plastic bottles appeared? Did we all die of thirst? No! We used reusable cups/glasses.
