Here is a chance for Australia to really put some pressure on. Stop exports of iron ore, coal, pharmaceuticals, food...everything in fact, and watch them sit up and take notice.

Since when have we been exporting pharmaceuticals to China?
Some decades ago we handed manufacturing of such products and their base ingredients to China in the interest of ’shareholder benefit’ and drug company executives bonuses. The time it would take to re-establish manufacturing in Australia would see a staggering number of their customers die.
Be very careful what you wish for.

We have a relatively small ($700,000,000 p/a) but consistent export market for pharmaceuticals to China.  https://tradingeconomics.com/australia/exports/china/pharmaceutical-products

With a bit of effort we can stop relying on imports from anywhere, not just China.

The chemical scenario seems quite likely, although even Putin must realise that most people in the West would never buy it. In Russia itself, who knows?

The use of nuclear weapons however would be an escalation that even Putin must see will do his cause far more harm than good. Aside from the immediate impact in Ukraine, the automatic protocols in place for such an attack will almost certainly develop a life of their own resulting in an escalation that would effectively be WWIII.

Any nuclear or chemical attack will tell badly on the Russians.  The winds are primarily from the west so any fall out would fall on Russian soil, hurting the Russians, themselves.  It might kill a few Ukrainians but in the longer term...    Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Meantime, they let some of the oligarchs get away with it !

Putin-linked Russian oligarchs with Australian assets escape Morrison government sanctions

Must have mates in high places !

(Why is this government reacting - taking action only after the media takes an interest - instead of getting out there and doing what they should be doing !  Seems a standard criticism of Scottie and co...) Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Just an oversight, or is someone in their pocket?

The prevailing wind in Ukraine isn’t always to the West.
To presume Putin is sane is the biggest mistake. OK, he’s more bad than mad but his state of mind is one of the most dangerous threats our species has ever faced. Or main hope is someone in the Russian military ‘removes’ him.

That’s the wrong question. How likely is Putin to unleash nuclear weapons is closer to it. To presume anything like the Russian people as a whole have any say in unleashing nuclear war is as inaccurate at to suggest the American people as a whole are able to make such a decision.

You have a point but basically it is useless.  Russia as a entity is referred to in the singular, as a collective.   In theory, at least, they are a democracy and Putin represents them as a people.  Therefore it is assumed that as a consequence when I say "Russia" I am referring to the country as a whole.   Just as a "America" as a whole refers to them collectively, as a "Australia" refer to Australia as a whole...   Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

What weapons have other countries supplied to Ukraine?

Seems there may be some significant training required before some of them become effective (Starstreak for instance)...
