With sufficient storages (plural - ie different localities) and PVs/wind farms (again different localities), plus smart grid, demand will always be met, by design (Nuclear might be needed to clinch the deal in some countries).

Key contracts have been awarded in Queensland, Australia, to work on what would be the world’s largest pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) plant.

As the state works towards ending its historical dependency on coal, the state government is behind the plan to build the 5GW Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro Project, which would offer long-duration energy storage (LDES) over a 24-hour discharge duration.

When announced last year, the project was hailed as an “ambitious plan” by the International Hydropower Association, which could be “an example to policy-makers around the world that we do not need to seek out new technology to bring the climate crisis under control, nor do we need to fall back on fossil fuels,” according to the association’s chief executive Eddie Rich.

Wow, more than twice the size of Snowy 2. ...some engineering vision in Oz?

5GW divide 24. So 200KWh. The highest daily use was 8,891MW in 24 hours and with EV's etc it can only grow. Of course they will have to pump uphill again.

That 8,891 equates to 370MWh. Seems someone is going dark if renewables fall short even for only 1 day. Wink

er.....much of the entire Oz desert lands north of the tropic of capricorn, which have massive solar and wind resources thus far minimally developed.

You definitely are no engineer. The Cultana solar plant has a nameplate capacity of 280MW. It has a probable 30% capacity factor as it has a single axis from east to west. That would mean a 90MW output, and yet they are going to supply the hydrogen hub with 200MW of power. The excess solar during the day is coming from where? Home solar? But they need that to charge their EV's. Roll Eyes
