First specify the type of socialism you are discussing... lay out the parameters... Menzies was a socialist of a kind.... there was an unwritten agreement that in return for loyalty and effort, the government would look after its people...
1. the "socialism" which delivers the essentials for all.
2. Menzies delivered the essentials for all because he was operating in the Keynesian 'welfare state' system (1946-1970s) funded by
deficit spending.
Nevertheless Menzies sought to increase private home ownership (not socialism), whereas the Labor platform emphasized public housing .
Quote:At that time it seemed most realistic - given international conditions etc - to have most employed and with the opportunity to prosper by work and discipline... it wasn't perfect but it did allow many people to own a home etc on a single income derived from an industrial age that did have its pitfalls etc...
Yes.
Quote:My uncle Ken and Auntie Shirley (a Kelly) - on his income from industry as well as his stipend for being a Rugby League referee, managed to raise six kids and own a home they passed on to those kids...
Yes
Quote:Now when we discuss 'socialism' we must do so without the parameter of a burgeoning industrial society - but rather one in which 'free enterprise' gets you ahead while any 'worker' lingers longer at the back of the pack - forever - and risks instant demolition of life and even liberty in the event of something - anything - going wrong.
Local manufacturing moved off-shore after the demise of Keynesianism, as a result of the Arab oil embargoes in the 70s which wrecked price-structures in the Western economies (causing 'stagflation'); globalization via freetrade was seen as the way to achieve lower prices for manufactured goods.
Quote:Such a milieu only encourages people to commit crime and grasp like the peasants the governments keep pouring into the country - what value is there in being an honest, hard-working citizen when it becomes clearer by the day that those in government are corrupt and self-serving?
The real culprits were the emerging crop of Neclassical economists led by Milton Friedman whose economic dogmas benefitted bosses at the expense of unions (workers).
Quote:I guess many of you missed the pre-Revolution days in Russia and the initial Menshevik control, and the Weimar Republic days...
Given the increasing acceptance of democratic socialists in the US recently (eg Mamdani), I've lately been exploring the movement from Marx to various divergent 'socialist' schools of post Marx "socialism" - some like Eduard Bernstein emphasized democratic change, others like Lenin sought more revolutionary change.
Russia chose the revolutionary path directed by Lenin, the Weimar republic chose a democratic path - until Hitler seized power.
So...fast forward to post ww2 Oz: 'Conservative' Menzies governed during the "golden age of capitalism" (in the West) as described above in the Keynesian welfare state era; but now - post Friedman and Thatcher, Albo is facing a fight with ON because he is overseeing a fall in home ownership rates, with increasing rents and increasing homelessness.
