My father used a razor and brush and always reckoned it was far better than a disposable and shaving cream.

There are men's grooming websites  that swear by this.  Let us know how it works out.

I just wax my legs once a month.

That's it.

End of story.

I did a clean up of the drawers in the bathroom and found a razor sharpener at the bottom drawer. It was my grandfather's razor sharpener from the days he was alive. I started using it for my own razors. I managed to extend the life of the razors by two or three times.

A razor sharpener , is that a leather strop?
I know how to use a strop.

First time I've ever used a safety razor and I was actually a little nervous so went very gently, yet still got a shave as close as I've ever had. Also the joy of using such a beautifully crafted German made piece of engineering over a plastic disposable piece of Chynese crap.

Be a man, use a razor.

He would have been right 30 years ago. 50 years ago a straight razor would give the best result.

...

Most people have always agreed that the cut throat gives the closest shave. The old razers mostly end up with the Norman Gunston effect.

The current razors are 100 times better.

I have found that the cut throat isnt any better than the good old safety razor.

With my beard, I only use it on my neck, so this may have some effect.

I trim my beard once a fortnight, and shave every second day.

Safety razors were invented 100+ years ago, and they're generally rated as good as a cut throat.

My dad had a cutthroat but used a safety. When I was a kid I had a safety without a razor, my dad and I would lather our faces and shave together. Disposable razors were not that old when I stopped shaving in '84.
My grandfather used an electric, I have that somewhere.

I remember when I was really young finding my dads safety razor, undoing the screw at the top and slicing my finger open trying to put it back together. I'll have to keep my new razor and blades somewhere high, away from the 4 year old!

Funnily enough, I impulse bought a $20 electric from of all places, Aldi a month ago, and it's not half bad. I keep it in the car but using this new setup is more like a spiritual routine. The shaver itself is such a beautiful precise instrument, something every bloke (who shaves) should own.

If the chicks I live with even think of putting it near their legs, I'm moving out  Grin

I can't think of anything worse than shaving.

How come you guys don't just wax your faces like we girls wax our legs?

Whenever I suggest that to my other half he gives me a filthy look.

I reckon it would be ok. Anyone here know?

However, for a man, it may be very painful to wax beard hair,” explains Rossi. “These hairs are more coarse terminal hairs and there is a larger density of them. It may be quite painful, and leave erosions.”

Terminal hairs, you see, are not like the hairs growing around the edges of your ears, or springing out of the tops of your toes, which is called vellus hair, i.e., peach fuzz. That hair is generally lighter in color, less coarse and most importantly, not influenced by hormones like testosterone.

Terminal hair is the opposite. It’s dark, thick, mature hair that mostly men get starting with puberty. It’s also very strong, found in denser patches than vellus hair and deeply rooted in the second layer of skin, known as the dermis. In other words, it’s hair that you don’t want to rip out with wax if you don’t have to. That’s because, as Rossi explained, doing so could result in something called “erosions.”

“An erosion is when the epidermis, the top layer of skin, is removed. It can lead to scar or color changes when healed,” Rossi says. “It is also quite painful.” Just google “skin erosion” if you need a visual reference, but I recommend you take the doctor’s word for it.

In the end, given the painful and potentially scarring results of trying to wax off your facial hair, it’s definitely not worth it.

I used an old-fashioned safety razor for a time, starting with an entry-level model then moved up to an expensive premium one but it got to be a bother after a while and also without the proper technique I'd often end up bloody.

Now I make the first pass with a Panasonic electric shaver then another pass with a Harry's razor and I am good to go.
